FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

Ditto: no audio on FaceTime unless I use my headset/ear buds and the person on the other end does too. I was on my MB Pro and my wife was on her iPad Air. What's interesting is after we established comms, she unplugged her ear buds and we could hear each other. However, if I unplugged my headset from the MB Pro, we lost audio.

Standing by, Apple! 😠

PRAM and SMC are temporary fixes.

So is rebooting.

It is a bug - my belief is that since it appeared somewhere between Public Beta 3 and PB 4, it was instituted as a "cripple" effect since people with older (circa-2011) Macs were able to use Continuity (I received phone calls from my iPhone 5s on my Mac).

Now, I get the crackling on Continuity phone calls AND FaceTime... which previously worked perfectly.

Laul - No idea what help you're providing here. I can give you a whole list of machines that AREN'T affected.

Help would be more justification of machines which ARE having issues.

On this - or another - thread, people with late-2011 MBP's are experiencing the clicking noise.

MY BELIEF (hypothesis) is that when Apple "crippled" Continuity on non-BT 4.0 / LE Macs, they ended up f'ing up FaceTime.

It's the same experience - clicking or popping noise.

MBP 15" Early 2011 with 10.10.1, Facebook audio is still broken, external bluetooth speaker works fine. Skype works fine with internal speaker. Apple, please fix it asap, it's your latest OS, your supported hardware, your native app, the bug doesn't make any sense and shouldn't have happened in the first place. Feels like Apple's attention to detail is only at their high level when it comes to appearance and marketing.

Mid-2009 MBP here and I have the same issue and it DRIVES me crazy. It works every now and again but lately more times than not, it has been glitching and not allowing sound at all to be send or received by my MBP. Doesn't matter if the person calls me or if I call them, popping/clicking sound like a bad speaker connection and then boom no audio. I almost know now when I make a call if I hear the sound to just give up on the call all together.

I found a workaround that works on my MBP 15' late 2011 at least:

Open iTunes, play any song and leave it playing. After doing this, the popping noise disappeared and the audio of FaceTime goes back to normal. Has anyone tried this before? The music playing won't get in the way of FaceTime as the system will turn down the volume from iTunes to very weak level.

I discovered this when I tried to play with the settings of FaceTime that I simply got ****** off by this bug. Then as I changed the ringtone, the sound from the other end went through, and popping noise came back after the ringtone stopped playing.

In fact I discovered the same thing 2weeks ago or a little less.

However, in my case, the iTunes volume does not automatically reduce anymore when I launch FaceTime... But it's fine if I just launch a songs without sounds (using the bar in iTunes, not the global volume).

However, it's clear that it is not a viable solution; So what ? Because it's Apple should we tell "ok, it's normal, not their fault" or I don't know what more ?? If it was happening on windows everybody (and probably also me) would laugh on Microsoft... Really, I'm fed up ! As everybody here probably...!

Yes - it appears the latest versions of 10.10.1 seed have sorted it... I think.

I've slept/awoken and used Facetime a bit.

My initial hypothesis is holding true - somehow Continuity was handing off phone calls from iPhone > computer, with or without Wi-fi enabled, and when Apple went to cripple it, they took out FaceTime along with it.

Whenever I go into FaceTime I get a clicking sound and I am unable to hear the other person I'm calling. They can hear and see me - I am now using Yosemite as my operating system. I know there is nothing wrong with my computer. I took my computer to the Apple store TWICE in Freehold NJ and FaceTime worked fine there. Prior to going there I disconnected my router (Netgear N600) and then waited a few minutes and reconnected it. I then tried FaceTime again and I could hear the other person's voice faintly but still had the clicking sound. After another retry - no voice and clicking sound.

I'm thinking that it might be the router - is it possible for:

1. A router to go bad? OR

2. Is the router I'm using (Netgear N600) not able to support Yosemite???

If your overall internet connection is fine and FaceTime is the only problem, it's very unlikely to be a router's problem - routers cannot pick what data to transmit...it's more likely your neighbor is using some high-end jamming device against you when you FactTime! Seriously, try put it on earphones and see if it makes a difference.
