FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

Okay, here's what I got:

1) Facetime/Google Hangout - Works fine when I have external speakers or ear buds plugged in. Still get clicking and no audio when using the internal speakers. My external speakers are using the digital output port and my ear buds are nothing special. Both work fine.

2) Skype - Works fine, period. Audio is not an issue no matter what my configuration is.

I was video chatting with my son who has a Mac Mini (10.10.1) and he is having the exact same results that I have on my MacBook Pro (also at 10.10.1). Both systems are connected via Wifi. At least I'm now able to video chat.

Interesting... At the moment I believe (at least for me) that this issue has to do with the internal speakers and how Facetime/Hangout is interfacing with them.

Side note: iTunes and Quicktime work fine on the internal speakers.

It has nothing to do with router, as i have the same issue on every router ( i travel with mac between work ( Netgear) and home Airport Extreme). It does not happen all the time, but it does happen after 2-3 successful calls. Having another partition on HD and installing Maverics on it makes problem none-existent. I used Maverics partition for 7 days and never experienced this issue.

I just wanted to add to this discussion to keep the complaints rolling about popping noise in FaceTime. I'm running a late 2008 MacBook (250 GB SSD, 8 GB Ram) with Yosemite 10.10 and the popping noise is persistent. Also, all audio is lost once the FaceTime connection has been made, microphone and speakers. Restarting the computer does ensure the next call works, but obviously this is an infuriating temporary fix. I've just installed 10.10.1, but haven't had the opportunity to see how it performs on my Mac. Will report back if I have any good news.

well HOW relieved I am to see I'm not the only one..with no volume and popping sound...I was excited to see I could make a call on Macbook and my iPad LOVE the feature but my iPad 3 and early 2011 Macbook were shown to not support the feature when it didn't work I researched it to find out it wasn't supported..but my 2 new iMacs do ....how happy I was to see it does now with the update.it works ...EXCEPT...for no volume and popping....it'll be fixed by them...I received a call that came through on my iPad and I answered it !!! made my day...

Updated to 10.10.1 and iOS 8.1 and that seems to have done the trick. I think the key was upgrading the iOS devices and now everything is working correctly.

Tested calling and fine.

Tested plugging and unplugging headphones. Worked normally.

Restarted computer and called. Worked normally.

Tested plugging and unplugging headphones again. Worked normally.

It's been 48 hours and no problems. Please update your iOS devices and update to 10.10.1 and reply back with reports! I'm hopeful this solves it for you too.

Best,

Shawn

I'm sure everyone read my previous posts but right now everything is working fine. Before my FaceTime had now audio and clicking sound - now it's fine. Right after that my videos on YouTube wouldn't play - today all is well. I didn't do anything to my computer and I'm not planning to as long as everything is running correctly.

If anyone has any idea what the problem could have been please post.
