FaceTime making strange clicking sound since OS X 10.10

Hi everyone,

I'll make it short. I am running an early 2011 - 13" MBP with 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, and OS X 10.10. Maybe I haven't been phrasing my issue correctly in google, but I may have a unique problem: as of updating my Mac to OS X 10.10, I am experiencing an issue with FaceTime video calls or voice calls (using FaceTime audio or the iPhone handoff feature) where all I can hear is a strange clicking sound, like static. The other person can hear me fine and I can see them fine if on FaceTime video, but I can't hear them.

I've tried checking my sound and microphone inputs/outputs before, during, and after the calls, and everything remains unchanged. The sound on every other app and in iTunes works just fine and I can hear people just fine if I have an external bluetooth speaker connected, but when using the Mac's sound output, I get the crackling sound. Please advise.

The simplest temporary solution is to plug audio jack, and then unplug it. It works immediately for me without any restarts.

I got two OS X installed on my macbook pro (10.9 and 10.10), and on 10.9 everything works without any cracks.

I hope 10.10.3 update will fix the issue... still hope... hoped for 10.10.1, hoped for 10.10.2 and now hoping for 10.10.3

Update.

After nearly two weeks of discussing the issue with AppleCare, resulting from my complaint to the BBB, I've been told the issue--according to Apple's engineers--is faulty wiring between the speaker and logic board, presumably from a bad previous repair. The fact that the issue only crept up and exists with Yosemite is a moot point with them, they don't care, and I was told to get it repaired to fix the issue. Meanwhile, as of 10.10.2, the degradation of audio with this computer increased to such a point that I've resorted to running Windows 8.1 via Boot Camp full-time for the past three weeks (and counting) to get work done. Everything from Spotify to Skype to iTunes all work flawlessly under Windows 8.1 via Boot Camp with this MacBook Pro,

In sum, AppleCare has told me to "buy a new Mac," "wait for a possible software update," or "repair the computer for a likely wiring fault" (paraphrasing). I cannot "downgrade" to Mavericks because I am given an error message that prohibits me from doing so. I will have to dig and find the Snow Leopard disc that came with this computer if I want to regain OS X functionality but I think I'll stick with Windows 8.1 for the foreseeable future, especially since Apple has given little choice but to use Windows.

The sad reality is I should never have bought this infernal machine--it's been nothing but a piece of junk since I got it, and I can see the money I spent might better have been spent elsewhere.

Hey Just adding to the query, MacBook Pro Mid-2009, This is definitely not a hardware issue. Face Time worked fine for me, when it all stared was when the new IOS for iPhones was put out the right after the Yosemite upgrade. Never had a problem with FaceTime until then. Also if someone is reading this, Can't explain random immediate shutdowns after disconnecting from the wall and closing the lid on the computer. I'm sure my message probably will get bounced but its truly annoying to have to do a restart just to use FaceTime or be some where else in the house and open the lid and have the computer shutdown and can't restart without plugging it in. Even when battery life is 80% plus.

Please don't tell me about this that and the other. Been using macs since the mac plus came out well aware of resetting this and that. APPLE, fix the problem - Also has anyone else noticed that certain applications remain in the Force Quit menu even after they have been "Quitted"

Annoyed. Still a Faithful mac user though!

ALSO if your reading - I think Firefox is doing a better job by incorporating basically everything web driven into their browser - APPLE could use a lesson!

Same problem happened to my Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011 i7 2.4 8gb ram,Yosemite 10.10.2 with 256gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD inside. The noise begins sometimes and I can't hear anything but just the crackling noise. For example when I am emptying the recycle bin normally is a special sound but instead of it I have this annoying noise. Sometimes I can just start a youtube clip and the sounds comes back to normal but sometimes nothing works so I have to reboot the system. This is very irritating!

After a clean install of Yosemite, which I really didn't want to do, I fixed it until yesterday (10.10.2). The speakers are going crazy with popping during facetime. I can sometimes hear the other end speak through it though, that is new.

FaceTime has been useless for more than a year no from this bug and before that, even dating more than 2 years back, it didn't work due to another issue, every since ML. Crazy.

I have a early 2011 MBP with 16 GB RAM and a 750 GB Hybrid drive running OS/X 10.10.2... FaceTime is the problem... Mine is version 3.0 and I am guessing that is the latest version... I have the already reported problem where it continues to ring after the person answers... Have the already reported problem where it is working fine - audio/etc with headphones, and when I take the headphones out of the headphone jack, get the clicking sound and no other sound - no ring, no voice... SKYPE works just fine, so this is a FaceTime problem... makes me want to use SKYPE more than FACETIME, in general... and rebooting fixes the problem, for awhile, and then the problem returns...

It worked for a while, but the noise came back answering a call from Facetime. So Soundsource app doesn't work for me…

At this stage a hardware problem is discarded, so the only hope is that Apple fix this nasty bug in Yosemite… I just installed an SSD in my MacBook Pro Early 2011, so as you may guess, I'm not planning to buy another one for a while. With 16GB RAM, new battery and now the SSD, my MacBook Pro works like a charm (except for the noise) for what I do.

Apple pleeeasseee…

I've been having this issue-like most of you-since I updated to Yosemite. I finally decided to google it hoping it wasn't a hardware issue and found this thread. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm running Yosemite 10.10.1 on a late 2008 15" MBP. I just saw the 10.10.2 update today. It doesn't say anything about the FaceTime fix...hopefully they've included it!

Oso Grande,

Back on page 10-12 fellow forum member "happygodavid" had his logic board replaced and it didn't help anything. Apple eventually replaced his computer (likely with a model that has the newer Bluetooth 4.0 board) and I don't recall him posting with any issues since then. But according to his posts he did in fact have his logic board replaced and he stated specifically that it did not fix the FaceTime issue.

I continue to encounter this issue myself. Recently, I spoke with an Apple rep about the problem and I posted a link to this thread. I ran the following keyboard shortcut in order to get a sysdiagnose log file to send to Apple.

Here's the keyboard shortcut:

COMMAND. SHIFT, OPTION, CONTROL, PERIOD

After doing this, a brief diagnostic runs and it will open a finder window with diagnostic files. I've not gone through them, but hopefully Apple's engineers can find something in the file in order to help isolate the problem.

Hi all!

I'm experiencing the same problem here with all the same symptoms on my MBP late 2011 - OS X Yosetime 10.10.2 . I don't know when it started, but I do know that when I've got Yosemite installed here Facetime calls on Mac through iPhone always worked as a charm.

It seems that Apple doesn't even care about having a expert to read threads like this and answer or report these kind of bugs in their software to greater specialists.

I hope it get fixed soon, meanwhile we'll need to workaround this using not-so-effective methods, although I appreciate them and thank all your help, fellows!

UPDATE

Apple just replaced the main logic board on my Early 2011 MBP, and so the issue remains. Running the new 10.10.3 does not fix the problem, either.

The MBP went to the Genius Bar last Monday, and picked it up yesterday (Saturday). The issue was replicable at the Genius Bar, the Mac Genius said it has to be a software issue and gave no further explanation. Thankfully, the repair was done at no charge so I am only out gas and time. Meanwhile, I continue to run Windows 8.1 via Boot Camp with no audio issues whatsoever while booted into Windows--only when booted into Yosemite 10.10 do I remain stymied by audio problems. I have wiped/reinstalled Yosemite (2) two times since this issue began last October/November, and the issue remains.

To date, since purchasing this MBP brand new in June 2011 ($2499 model w/ AppleCare), this MacBook Pro has had the following components replaced:

(3) Three logic boards

(1) One LCD Display

(1) One Topcase/Keyboard

(1) One Battery Connection Cable

(1) AC Power Cord (Out of Warranty, cost me ~$65)

In hindsight, I am convinced I should have bought a Windows PC a saved myself the grief of this machine.

MBP Early 2011 (pristine conditions until now)

Yosemite 10.10.3 (issue started before x.x.3) - no issue on MT Lion

16GB ram 1T SSD (both aftermarket)

Issue

- upon connecting using Facetime audio will start making crackling / poping noises and caller will not be able to hear you.

- crackling noise remains after Facetime is closed - if you have the Volume level feedback sounds on all you can hear are crackling noises as you increase, decrease, or mute sound.

- If you launch other audio software (like iTunes) and play audio the issue will correct itself and remain corrected until you use Facetime again - not by launching facetime but, rather, as soon as you CONNECT to someone by calling or receiving a call.

Fixes tried

- MIDI settigns - FAILED

- Full clean Yosemite Install - FAILED

- Log out of icloud / facetime account and log in again - FAILED

- Created a new (temp) user account and problem occurred on this new account (done with an Apple Genius bar representative)

- Ran full diagnostics - no H W issues noted...

- Reverted to original 4GB ram modules - FAILED

- Took machine to apple store - problem replicated while on their network - No fix (or notion that this issue is affecting many people) - was requested to leave the machine over night for more HW testing.

- powering down or logging off will solve the issue temporarily.

Please keep this discussion open until a fix is deployed!
