safari iOS 8.1 freeze and slow

Hello,

i have same problems with ios 8.1 with my Ipad3. when the Google search shows me the results, the blue links does not respond when I tap. Safari was as if frozen. I have to drag the page up or down so that the link becomes active again. Further the application is very slow. Today I tried iPad Air it was same thing !!!!

the problem persists since updating iOS8.0.0. I am very disappointed with Apple.

Well I was reading about iOS 8.0 and 8.1 issues on the iPad
So when my wife's new iPad Air 2 arrived 3 weeks ago, I installed iOS 8.1.1 on it.

She has absolutely no issues and speed is great and no hang ups whatsoever.

So if you are using iOS 8.1.1 on your new iPad Air 2 and my wife is also, how come you are having problems and she is not?

The only difference I can see here is the router or using the 2.4G versus 5G signal.

If it's not the router, what is it?

If it really was a router issue it would affect all kinds of apps that require a internet connection, but since most people are experiencing the stalls/freezes/delays with Safari and other browsers only it strongly looks like a software issue to me. The general slowness of older devices is probably hardware related, meaning the "old" hardware can't really handle iOS 8 in general.

Hi Tom,

One more time for the record.

Two identically specced iPads in my household, IDENTICALLY SPECCED, both factory restored, same apps, same everything. EXCEPT one runs under iOS 7.1.2 and the other under iOS 8.1.2 - And guess what?

The one under iOS 8.1.2 runs like a tortoise and the one under iOS 7.1.2 like a hare!

What's the most likely culprit Do you think?

Stephen,

There has to be an explanation for why some people have found solutions yet those don't work for everyone. No one's situation is identical. We are all using different model iPads, upgrading from different iOS versions using wireless or hard connections, have tried different tweaks or patches, are using different apps, etc ... having spent 12 years in I/T, I know that each of these scenarios can influence the results people get when they try a suggested 'fix'.

What I meant by "I'm thinking there's no one guaranteed solution for everyone as it depends on what went wrong on each individual iPad during the iOS 8 upgrade" was that I think the reason why some people (like me and Jeff12, for instance) were able to get resolution with a simple clearing of the cache is because what the upgrade broke or damaged in their particular case may not be the same as what the upgrade broke or damaged on someone else's. They may have started out on the same road (upgrade) but took different shortcuts (impact) yet still arrived at the same destination (problem). Hence different solutions for different people.

Regarding your comment, "the fact is, IOS8.1+ on anything older than the latest A7 chips will run mind-numbingly slow." ... the fact is, since clearing the cache, my old iPad is running iOS8.1.2 perfectly fine.

Finally, I'm not sure why you used such a condescending tone in your response to me. First off, I was responding directly to Jeff12, not you, and never suggested that his 'fix' would work for everyone. I was simply saying it worked for ME and was thanking him for his contribution ... so I'm not sure why you took anything I said personally.

That said, I had almost given up hope of ever being able to use my iPad for anything worthwhile, so I hope that Apple steps up soon so that you and everyone else can have your problems resolved. It's ridiculous that this is even an issue.

So having been happy with the improvement in performance of my iPad Air from going to 8 > 8.1 I upgraded to 8.1.2 last night. What a mistake. Back to the same utterly woeful performance that I experienced on 8. In particular the Safari usability is back to being a miserable experience. This is pathetic Apple, absolutely pathetic. Sick of this iPad Air now. Never again will I purchase another.

😁

It beggars belief that we're 42 pages in now and not one person from Apple has made an appearance, I'm thinking of contacting Watchdog about this as it seems that only when the BBC get involved that Apple really give a ****, I can just see Apple now spilling the B******t on Rouge traders....👿

They don't seem to care about what a few thousand people think and only really care when it's one million plus hearing how they treat their customers that they really care, You know for sure if they do not care about their customers they sure don't care about their child labour half way around the world..😼

Just to support everyone on their disappointment and sentiment. Apple finally has gone to $h1t. I could not even post to this discussion in Safari. And even Chrome does not work that well. But yes, I'm on an ipad2 and it is very sluggish, lots of crashes, video controls do not work very well if at all any more, dead links, odd, jerky, unmanageable behavior of Web pages and a strong urge to stick my middle finger at Apple and go to a Surface 3. I don't know if Apple has lost its way after Steve Job's loss, or it it's come apart some other way. But they clearly are no longer the purveyor of pristinely elegant, well-behaved products they used to be. They are about as good as HP at this point, if not worse. The only consolation is that others are having same problems on newer devices. I thought they were just trying to force us to upgrade.

I can confirm usability problems are not limited to the older ipad2, my ipad4, ipad mini and iphone5 all have identical issues ie slowness, freezing, crashing and requiring multiple taps.

I also have Android phone and tablet and a Windows8 tablet, all these have their own usability issues.

I suggest tablets and phones reached their optimum level some years ago but intense competition fforces ever more new devices into the market with neww features very few customers will ever use.

This intense competition is bad news for us as there is no time to fix basic usability bugs, the new "improved" product must take priority.

I am sure a majority of customers would be happy with a basic device that used a reliable and smooth operating system.

If i ever get my ipad back to reasonable usable condition i will never do another ios update.
