ios 8.1 WIFI not working!

So i have an iphone 4s since ios 8 came out not even 8.0.1/2 my wifi has been completely useless. I have been anticipating this 8.1 update for awhile now hopeful that it may fix my wifi problem but it hasnt... My specific problem is that it cannot even detect the wifi around the area.. when it does which only lasts probably 2 minutes max... ive tried the refrigerator method which only works for a limited time.. Many people i have read online have similar issues.. Incredibly dissapointed apple needs to step up.

If Comcast owned your wireless router I would call them. You can explain that someone suggested changing the bandwidth to 20mhz only and they should be able to help. As for the authentication pages you will have to talk with Comcast. Maybe you have to register each wireless device you use on your network? This would be a Comcast thing and they should be able to help you with this.

Hi, Scott,

They don't, and everything else works flawlessly-no problems whatsoever with any other tablet, (5) PC, (2) Chromebook, phones (2).

Did every conceivable fix. My only curiosity is, (besides when Apple will give us a fix for this serious issue, which renders my iPad MIni virtually useless,) why it connects so flawlessly with my Galaxy s4 when I turn on the hotspot?

Well your galaxy is a home, not a router. So when it share the Internet connection it sharing it on a single band at 20Mhz and not trying to use a dual band or 2 antenas for the Internet connection. It's also not doing anything like MIMO (multiple in multiple out) over 2 or more antenas.

Plus you don't have any Comcast backend system validating that the device should be allowed to connect and redirecting you browser page.

So you may two things going on.

1. See if you can change the router to use 20Mhz band only as I prevoiusly suggested above. If your not sure how to change this and if the wifi router was provided by Comcast then they should be able to help you change those settings.

2. The Comcast redirect page thing. This will have to be Comcast that help you since I don't have Comcast and can't say for sure what they are looking for.

Even if the Galaxy is using your Comcast Internet to share. Comcast will only see your galaxy device and not any device being shared connected to the Galaxy. The Galaxy becomes in lack of better terms a Internet proxy hiding the iPad from the Comcast device security system redirect.

I had the WiFi problem at first on my iPad after updating to 8.1 (was on iOS 7 prior). It would connect fine, but after 5-10 minutes it would disconnect until I toggled my wifi off & on. I tried everything; reboot, reset settings, and even restore. Nothing worked. I reset my router, and that didnt work either. Last night when I went to work, I noticed I wasn't dropping off the wifi at all. Today I logged into my router at home from my laptop, and went through all the settings. There's a WiFi MultiMedia(WMM) tab with some toggles in it. One of them is "Power Save Support" which is supposed to help small wifi device batteries last longer, or something... I turned that off, turned my modem off, back on again, and reconnected on my iPad. I havent had any issues since. So since different routers probably have different tabs/settings(different manufacturers at least)... I'd say look through all the settings that involve your wireless, search for any sort of power saving mode, and turn it off. Also, in the wireless settings, make sure you're "802.11 mode" is set to the highest possible (mine is "Up to 300 Mbps"). I'm not sure if this will help anybody, but I hope it does because I know how frustrated I was with the issue. Good luck!

I Would like to give my recent update. All my apple devices including MBPR and iPhone 6 are now stable connected to my 5Ghz router on a 40Mhz bandwidth at full speed. As I mentioned about draft wireless in a previous post they are not finalized. apparently Even after updating my wifi routers the updates were not taking completely and some updates included new updated draft drivers for the wifi radios.

So with one a simple reset to defaults fixed the issue. The other one required what's called a 30/30/30 reset. You can Google this for more information.

After fixing the routers and having the wireless card replaced in the MBPR everything has been stable and working great. I was able to change my bandwidth to auto 20/40 and the laptop connects on 40, or specify 40 only and it works. The iPhone 6 is now fast, contact and not dropping.

So in my opinion if the iPhone 6 is using the most updated latest wifi chip drivers but my routers were not because the firmware update didn't aply it correctly and needed a reset. Well I beleive this may have been the issue. Maybe the router companies assumed he firmware update applied the new drivers but in reality the router needed a reset to apply these changes and not just a restart. So now I'm not forced to use my own recommend work around of being on 20MHz bandwidth and all is working.

So if my prevoiuse work arrounfd didn't work for you then you can try this one that corrected all my ios wifi issues. And also since my last post my girlfriend from California has moved in and also with 2 additional iOS devices on my network. Another phone and an iPad Air both on 8.1 and she streams a lot of TV and Movies and has not had an issue.

NOTE: the defaults or 30/30/30 will require you to out all the wifi setting back, reset the default password and add wifi keys. So you will want to make a note of all your setting and you will also want to know your default passwords that can be found in the online manuals for your wifi router.

Hi iBoss,

It seems that different people are having different issues with the wifi and since this is the biggest thread noting "wifi issues" all these different issues are showing up on one thread. I'm glad changing your DNS to use googles DNS server worked for you. But you shouldn't have to do that unless your wifi router is having a problem passing the Internet gateway/modem DNS server information on to the wireless devices using DHCP.

Personaly i prefer using my internet service providers DNS since Google already tries to track everything and I don't want to help them track me or my activity :-)

if your DHCP is not passing on your DNS server then you still may want to do a reset on the wifi router. If you do prefer to use googles DNS servers then may I suggest you program the wireless router to hand out googles addresses? You should be able to do this on your router under "DHCP". You might need to change the DNS section to manual and enter the following addresses 8.8.8.8 Primary DNS, 6.6.6.6 backup DNS.

since ive ive seen my ISP internet DNS fail soxmetimes what I like to do is out my internet providers DNS in the primary part, and one of googles DNS in the secondary. This way if my ISP primary DNS fails for some reason then anything connected to my wireless will automatically try the Google backup address.

I Hope this makes sence and helps people.

Iphone 5C here.

No problems during 8.0 really (now and then sluggish internet, but hey what's new in the internet world?).

Now: WiFi connects, meaning I can see all the networks in my immediate area and connect to any of them (even if it takes more time than it used to).

Internet connections "work" for some apps (very slowly and lags in contrast to iOS 8.0). When I say some, it's basically only WhatsApp that seems to work, though I have to renew the lease now and then. However, ALL other apps I've tried so far (Google Maps, Safari, YouTube, etc.) state the iPhone is NOT connected to the internet. Obviously, other devices using the same router(s) work as per usual.

The apps can see internet clearly with 4G, so it's just the WiFi screwing things up.

Tried resetting the network twice, hard reset didn't work either.

I could rant towards Apple about user testing and quality control, but it seems superfluous: Apple simply needs to step up here. Just as a warning though, got some very smug Android and Win phone users in my direct environment now... And I can't blame 'm.

Hi I know you have tried this but just try one more time Settings Reset Network setting After Reset enter Router wireless key Also turn Router off for 30 seconds Also later on the Web look for your make of Router check for a Firmware update. If all fails Do a Factory Reset this will get rid of some bugs Cheers Brian

Why oh why oh why do you people continue to suggest these bs resolutions... the problem is obviously an iOs 8.x issue, since it occurs on various device types that didn't have an issue when they were running iOS 7.x. Rather than continue to make ridiculous suggestions on how to reslove this issue, go to www.apple.com/feedback and demand a REAL resolution.

Nov 2, 2014 2:24 AM in response to Briansyddall

As I said before, the issue occured due to the 8.1 update of the iPhone and affects WiFi connections not just at my router, but EVERYWHERE.

What you are suggesting is that the iPhone works perfectly but the rest of the world is at fault ⚠.

Come on. Apple screwed up. You cant seriously stand there and tell me Apple decided to throw overboard all existing internet protocols and connection types that were fully functioning in 8.0.2 on my device in the hopes that all router software in the world would be adapted to run with a single new Apple code.

That would be utterly ********. Not to mention arrogant and enough reason for me to abandon Apple if this is the way they think, because that would make them utterly unreliable.

I have problems too.

- My device: iPhone 6 64gb

- iOS: 8.1

- 1 day life.

- Problem: Wifi doesn't work at home, at university etc.

- I try: Reset of network settings, reset the device as new, reboot, reset of my wifi router etc. I try all.

- Results: nothing change

- Always the wifi settings ask me the password, I put the correct, it doesn't accept; or it says me: impossible to find it, impossible to connect, password incorrect (is correct). Sometimes it has accepted the password (after 20 times trying) but it hasn't worked at all. Only one time it has worked for 2 minutes and after no connection.

Sorry if my english is not so correct. I think as all that is a bug of iOS 8.1. I hope for a solution.

FWIW, for my network using Airport Extreme to broadcast wifi, I set the DNS per Google's specs in Airport Utlity:

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Scroll down to Mac OS X.

And then went to settings on iPhone 6+ and renewed lease. So, my DNS on iPhone says 8.8.8.8. (I did a power off and restart just for good measure).

I vaguely remember doing this in the past with iPhone/iPad. I seem to be having less issues now. Your mileage may vary :-)
