ios8 Mail app does not notify

Hi, my iPhone 6 running the up to date IOS 8.1 does not notify new emails until I turn off the Mail app (or open the app and manually update). It won't notify me when the app is running in background. Does anyone have similar problems or knows the solution please? Thank you in advance.

If you're referring to a Gmail account, Gmail does not support Push (unless you use the Gmail or other 3rd party app). In the iOS Gmail setup, it only supports Fetch, always been that way

Some users (like me) used to get around this by setting Gmail up as an Exchange account, and while that allowed Gmail to Push in the native Mail app, Google pulled the plug on Active Sync on Feb. 1st 2013. Unless you had a paid Gmail account, you could only continue using this Exchange profile for Gmail on a device which was set up that way prior to this date. Supposedly there are some workarounds to get this to work again, but I tried and it did not seem like Push to me.

I learned to live with Fetch, I guess I'm not as anxious to see new emails as I used to be ;-)

But here is a thread on this topic which you may find interesting:

ios 8 on iPhone can't access google as exchange account

Particularly the last post in which the user claims Google has re-enabled Active sync:

But, as the following post indicates, it seems to work only for corporate Gmail accounts.

My preference is the built in mail app for Outlook and the Gmail app for Gmail(obviously).

That way I get push for everything.

As you only need Gmail you could turn off Gmail in the built in app and just use the Gmail app.

back to the original problem, I have been notified of every reply in this thread via Outlook and the built in app. Why it wasn't working and now has started working I have no idea. Maybe the update settling down as James said.

I think we are all getting off topic a bit. Something has seriously gone wrong with the Mail app in iOS 8.1. I use this daily, and since upgrading, I now do not get notifications of mail, nor do any download unless I make the Mail app active, which is useless to me. I have and always have had Push setup. This is an Exchange service, not sure if that matters.
