Hi, my iPhone 6 running the up to date IOS 8.1 does not notify new emails until I turn off the Mail app (or open the app and manually update). It won't notify me when the app is running in background. Does anyone have similar problems or knows the solution please? Thank you in advance.

Yeah. This push issue like I said needs to be fixed. I guess we just have to give Apple a little time to realize this problem.
Some services, like Gmail, don't offer push notifications through the system Mail app. You need to use their third-party apps.
My work email is on Exchange, and Push is working perfectly fine. I suspect that there may be some tweaks needed on the server side in your case?
Team -- I have a new iPhone 6+, and I am having the "PUSH" issue too. I have 4 phones of various flavors and OS levels. All the other devices are alerting as they should; only the 6+ is not alerting until I actually enter the app. This is a corporate Exchange account (2003).
As Murphy would have it, this is my VP's phone and he has VIP alerts setup from our CIO\CEO and system outage alerts. So needless to say, PUSH is critical.
Update: I have another user on a new iPhone 6 with the same issue... exchange mail not pushing...

On a side note. Not sure if anyone mentioned this earlier, but Gmail no long uses PUSH on free accounts. It will apparently continue to work on your old device until you have to reload the app. If you get a PAID account, gmail will offer PUSH.

That may very well be the problem, I believe MS extended support for Exchange 2003 ended earlier this year so it wouldn't be surprising if there are necessary updates that have not been implemented. Perhaps its time to talk to IT ...

I have an iPhone 6 on ios 8.1 and have the issue where push notifications work sporadically. It seems to be on my outlook.com and hotmail.com accounts where this is happening. I depend on push notifications for work, so this really bothers me. I've rebooted the phone - reset the network settings - deactivated/re-activated notifications - deleted/re-created the email accounts. Nothing works! 😟
Having the same issue regards email push settings. Running iOS 8.1 on an iPhone 6. I was hoping that the 8.1 update would sort this, but obviously not. I've tried taking the phone back to factory settings and starting again from scratch, but it's not solved it.
Fingers crossed for a fix for this soon as this is a major issue, and as things stand I'm losing work by not responding immediately to emails.
