iOS 8.1 - Keyboard Shortcuts: Restores Previously Deleted Keyboard Shortcuts

At random times when I go into the Keyboard Settings on my Mac (Yosemite) or iPhone (iOS 8.1) the Keyboard Shortcuts I have deleted since iOS 7 keep coming back and syncing between my iPhone and Mac. Just yesterday I deleted them from 8.1 and Yosemite but today they are back. I deleted all of the ones on my Mac but those changes don't sync over to my iPhone.

There should be a way to disable keyboard shortcuts and fix this bug.

I keep thinking I have it fixed then out if the blue they are back. The usual trigger is rebooting the iPad or lately it seems to happen at the first of each month. the iPad is less than 2yrs old. I expect things like that from older devices, but this is ridiculous. My friend just told me today he is a already having problems with the iPad Air2, so upgrading is not the option. Looking harder and harder to find a better solution. They just went to a Surface Pro instead of a new MacBook. It's gonna take a lot of that for the greed to subside within Apple. When the upper level tech support tells you they have no ideas why it's happening it points to poor quality control or bad programmers. Either are good reasons to start looking for a more efficient option. Most of us don't have time to be down 2-3 days to reload everything because of an update. Again, so "Windows like" if you hear of a real solution, by all means post.

I was told yesterday to bring it in to the store. Not sure what they can do different that they haven't already walked me through to try... It might be the determining factor to what new devices I buy from Apple if any. I'm sad I can no longer brag and show off my cool apple stuff...it's no longer cool when it works/acts like all the other brands. Sorry Apple, totally failing. Even Steve Jobs would be livid about this kind of crap!

I have tried another way and it has been working fine even I have switched off/ on and hard reset my iPhone. ✌

Here it is

  1. go download a third party keyboard, select it in setting > general > keyboard > add new keyboard
  2. then remove the original keyboard, it should be named as "english"
  3. go to shortcuts and remove those unwanted
  4. go add back the original keyboard "english" in setting > general > keyboard > add new keyboard
  5. at this moment, the "enable dictation" in general > keyboard should be turned off, DO NOT turn it on
  6. restart your iPhone and it should be working.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I totally get it! Did the same thing! Also bought a Windows laptop! If I'm gonna have to upgrade every two years to get the functionality I want, I might as well save a few thousand dollars and go back to the old way of doing things. So far, I'm pleased with both new choices! I'll keep the iPad for now, but if a few apps get a better Windows version the 2-in-1 Tablets might change that game too!

iOS8 feels like I'm in a Vista world...nothing works quite right all the time! Sad that corporate greed overrides quality and functionality these days! We really don't need a new iOS every year to kill off a few more products so we are forced to upgrade. Just buy a cheaper product that will get the job done and know you might have to upgrade eventually. It's much more budget friendly that way and so far, just as stable! Can't wait to see Windows 10. The guys at the Windows store have a lot of good things to say about it. 8.1 is not so bad...definitely designed more for touch screen!

IF they ever get the message, Apple might get my business back again someday! For now I refuse to spend $1000's of dollars to be continually frustrated anyway!

None of the workaround work for me (iOS 8.1.3). The shortcuts go away for some variable amount of time and then inevitably return. I have tried third party keyboards, deleting all 34 of my shortcuts, logging out of iCloud altogether. The shortcuts just keep coming back after some time. I also tried changing my shortcuts to be "loopbacks" e.g. shortcut "abc" resolves to phrase "abc", but then the old shortcut is restored along with the new one (effectively corrupting the shortcuts data). Really bizarre.

There is another discussion going on about this here: I cannot delete iPhone keyboard shortcuts. They keep restoring.

I don't think Apple cares about their users anymore. This problem has been around for a very long time and they have done nothing. Its not the company it used to be and I for one am seriously considering giving some other vendor a try.

This worked for me:

1. Delete all your shortcuts

2. Create a new, simple one. (in my case, I created a shortcut for "on my way" to be "omw")

3. Save the new shortcut

4. By now, you should only have one shortcut in your list

5. Restart your iPhone (normal restart)

6. When your phone is back on, check the shortcuts again. There should only be one shortcut there (which is the "omw" I created previously)
