Mac Mini 2014 Oct cannot wake up after sleep

Mac Mini 2014 Oct Version, cannot wake up after sleep by typing on keyboard or moving mouse (both hardwired USB) if external HDMI screen goes to sleep mode too (usually after 1 min if no signal coming from the MAC). To wake up, I ust turn off and turn on the screen and keep typing on the keyboard. I already checked "prevent computer from sleeping if display goes to sleep". But does not help. This is very annoying. I now try to set the sleep timer to more than 1 hour. Wasting my energy and not helping. I tried connecting my HDMI screen to a HDMI to mini-Display port adaptor cable, then plug into the thunderbolt port of the MAC. Same issue, no improvement.

I recently had the same problem with a Dell Ultrasharp monitor and the mac mini. However, I had set up the mac and the monitor in July 2015 and the problem only appeared in October. The only way to wake it up was to do a SMG and NVRAM reset, which I had learned about on a support call. I did turn off sleeping while I was researching the problem. Apple tech suggested I try a different monitor to rule that out as a problem. As it happens my wife just got a new computer with another Dell Ultrasharp. I tried that and it worked fine. Woke up every time. I messed around with trying different mini DP cables as I found out the Dell doesn't test their equipment on Apple products and there was some discussion of the dual purpose Thunderbolt/ mini DP output on the Mac mini and whether it was entirely compatible with Display Port. Nada. On the Mac mini there's no other output for a monitor other than the Thunderbolt/ miniDP as far as I could tell. Then I looked into the monitor menu to see if there was anything weird. Nothing. But I saw a "Reset to factory specifications" choice. Did that. Problem solved. I now suspect that the problem emerged when I was uploading tons of files to CrashPlan and I reset all the disc sleep choices to allow the computer to work 24/7 uploading. Don't know why, but that's the only thing that changed recently, and my scientific mind always asks when a problem emerges, "what changed here?"

Note - have latest version of El Capitan.

I am having the exact same problem on my 2011 mini. Have latest updates connected 2 monitors. Have you found a solution? Thanks

Greetings Shores403 a couple of years later. While using El Capitan, these same problem occurred for my MacMini and I used your approach successfully. The day after though, with the changed settings you described, the issue returned and I had to reboot the Macmini to bring the computer back to life. Like so many others here this started from out of the blue about two weeks ago.

It's important to note that I have monitored the light on the Macmini. It is not off nor is it pulsing implying that the computer is on but the monitor is not. My monitor is a great Samsung but it requires an HDMI converter because it's just a couple of years older than the HDMI technology. Does this at all relate to the problem? I am unable to set the monitor to HDMI (currently set to AUTO) for this reason.

I also turned off scheduled events and turned the sleep in 15 minutes to 'Never Sleep' but something is still causing this to occur.
