iPad Air 2 sound vibration

i just got my iPad Air 2 and the speaker vibrates whenever I play video or music even at low volume. Is this a common problem?

tonefox. Very profound reply and quite correct in your deductions. However I was asked a question about the issue and I replied "if you put slight pressure on the back of the iPad the screen distorts." Just a fact. Doesn't mean I was looking for the issue and yes I don't intend to start poking my finger on the back while using it. (or dropping it)

My original post was about sound vibration which may cause problems for some people. Not decided if that is going to be me. I'm waiting for my case to arrive and see if that dampens the issue.

No offence taken by the way.😉

Mine does the same. Along with the screen distortion issue I think I might return mine. I'm afraid it looks as though quality has been compromised in order for Apple to continue making things thinner. I think The thinness of the iPad Air 2 is too much and gives it a feel of cheapness and when put together with the other issues its not a good product, just my opinion. I mean seriously. Don't hold it too tight or the screen goes weird, don't play music or video above 3-4/15 or the back feels likes its coming off, but hey its thin as ****.

Case or no case (tried both) the iPad Air 2 vibrates much more than iPad Air when using the speakers. Very disconcerting to feel it vibrating like a drum in my hands while I listen to a bit of music while surfing the web. Some people on macrumors have suggested headphones which I find ridiculous. Why include speakers if that's the only way to have a good experience?

BTW the iPhone 6 has the same issue. Hold phone same way people have for decades, you can feel the case vibrate right around the Apple logo with bass heavy hold music or male voices.

This is a situation where the product people and engineers did nothing to reign in Jony Ive with product requirements and due to secrecy, it's not like you can include real users in UAT.

I do enjoy my iPhones and iPads but next round I'm not buying sight unseen like I have with every new version. Too many issues with software, design and hardware IMO this round. No more annuity payments until Apple can prove they can get the design team back under control. Tim is an ops guy, needs to get his head into product live Steve did or find someone who can.

I bought sight-unseen as well, mainly because I wanted the performance bump and my iPad Air 1 was 16gb and Mini Retina is 32gb (kept the Mini Retina for Evernote & E-book reading). I probably will wait next time, too.

The one thing I know about Tim Cook (despite being an ops guy) and Jony Ive's design ethos driving some product requirements -- is that they seem to be constantly open to learning and pivoting. And not afraid of being wrong. So feedback will be important if the Air 2's design is ultimately wrong and too compromised in certain areas. It will need to be be communicated to exec team. I agree - they have been on a helluva iteration tear of late with software, just as much as design and hardware. Too many problems with all those changes. I think after Apple Watch they need to enter a "maturity period" on the current product line and let the next release lifecycle be about refinement. As a leader in innovation and profits, they have the breathing room and time to do so.

Re: Steve & Tim's product philosophies -- I do agree there is no longer a huge product taste-maker like Steve Jobs setting the tone for what's not acceptable at Apple. They are working to emulate that through culture and Apple University (internal training). We're 3 years on from Steve's passing and Apple is naturally entering a new phase in its internal culture and direction. A lot of the way Steve did things remains...and a lot is changing. I don't see Apple quite as tolerant of tension between product groups, for example, as Jobs was (evidence, Forstall being let go). Fear of fighting and struggling for an idea, or competition between ideas and product teams, hopefully doesn't get completely snuffed out this evolving culture. I think Tim is doing a good job, he seems to be trying to avoid the "Ballmer trap" (keeping the trains running and profit going at the expensive of innovation). But Tim & exec team needs to keep embracing Steve's ability to change his mind and toss a line of thought, if it's not serving the product. And I think loss of dampening on the speakers doesn't serve this product. I am confident it will get corrected.

  • It does vibrate to the extent I think something is wrong.
  • I notice a very slight yellow tint of my air 2 screen.
  • The right middle side of air 2 where my right hand rests when holding is heated up under load. Luckily I use left hand to hold it usually.
  • Other than these, everything is great and smooth.

Do you guys think we should extend the apple care? I think a normal case cannot protect it from dropping or internal failure (I sort of think it will fail in 2 years holding it.) anyways.

I just bought an iPad Air 2 today and wish I would have read this discussions. The build quality for IPads has gone downhill. My volume is not even 3 bars its very low and still case vibrates from it. The ipad got very warm after 40 mins of using, which is probably normal for such thin device however I noticed video graphics tearing in games. The sort of tearing I have seen happen when computer graphics card heat is high. Should I be concern this thing is going to burnt out within months? Would it be too late to get that silly AppleCare?

I am a bit disappointed they don't quality test their stuff better.

Someone may like the 'haptic feedback' when playing strong beats or action stuffs. lol

just kidding...but I rarely use the speaker on iPad anyways.

You can extend apple care within 60 days you purchase the iPad. Based on the workload I put on it, I don't think it can survive 2 years without any issues.

Do you use a case with your iPad? It may heat it up further.

According to others, a cover can partially fix the vibration issue but, not a small number of users are starting to complain. When more iPads are sold, the issue will be more obvious and influential. However, some of them found the issue may exists only in the devices that were made within a special time frame. Even more unbelievably, one of the anonymous post say he who works for apple in the China manufacturer that actually this issue has already been found by Apple field engineer as early as one week ago. This is a issue about the speaker, and its frequency was wrong and has caused the back to resonate with the speaker.

If its a batch issue, I will definitely return it. The annoying part is the iPad body blocks part of the vibration, so it feels 'hazy' and annoyingly unclear in my hand -0-. Can anyone confirm that the new iPad Air 2 sounds louder when put on a table or surface, as oppose to handheld. I can hear quite a difference that the iPad sounds become a bit mumbling when I hold it in the air?

Oct 25, 2014 11:13 PM in response to tsang2320

Well, I think it's better to return it now. When producing a product that is so groundbreaking at thickness for the first time it's normal for the first batch to have some issue. Prior, iPhone had some issue about the screen and defective battery, they had it fixed later, the phones containing the defective battery were recalled. I don't know if apple will fix this secretly or? I don't know, I just feel... Jobs isn't here anymore, it was 30 days, now 14 days.

When you returned it did you have to pay restocking fee? I am thinking of returning my Air 2 as well. I bought mine at BestBuy yesterday. They have 14 day return policy but I don't know if they do restocking fee. The issue I have with my Air 2 is the video tearing happening when I try to play games even though I have disabled all possible options in settings, leaving ipad to just run on bare minimum. I did some googling and I have found people have issues with pressure marks LCD. Pressure marks can happen when holding it with one hand. However, I rarely hold it with one hand. The speaker vibration is bad, makes iPad feel like a cheap $50 android knock off.

Somebody please advice me, should I try to just get complete refund and be done with this tablet? I really wanted a new tablet but this has left me with a sour taste. 😟

Anyone who has issues or hates the sound vibration please leave feedback so they become aware of it. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
