agree with your analysis of that post, amigo (I actually, did see it a while ago when this happened to me and I became curious). That said, I am gonna go out on a limb and say that the offending post(s) were Jailed and therefore unsearchable by we mere subjects.

I got the user tip posted after Hiroto ran in some political difficulty with hosts over testing of the stylesheet. Hiroto wrote the stylesheet. Bdaqua, WZZ, and I did the testing. I wrote up the user tip.

Here is my ASC work flow...

1) I login.

2) Start an auto reloader.

Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out. The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense ;-) .

I use Firefox and ReloadEvery.

You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC. I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some logins. It's ASC. Change rccharles to your apple id.

3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.

4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.

7) Read and answer my old posts. I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )

8) I use tabbed browsering. From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.

I'm no longer hearing from asfahan.

The code could have changed, but it was happening regularly for me before I started using auto-reload.

To put this to rest... it is NOT a function of log off (and therefore no erroneous messaging). It is an un-reproducable by ActionFlow repetition bug in the JiveWare, random in nature - is Always asfahan - therefore impossible to find and fix. If it stops, it may be just as random stopping as starting.

That's not my take on the situation. It happened to me when I didn't do any ASC update for 30 minutes while writing a reply then clicking replay.

I didn't track this down more because Apple doesn't want to acknowledge bugs nor want to work with anyone in narrowing down things. Would like to be proven wrong on this.

'tis mere coincidence that it happened in the logged off state as it happened to me while firmly logged in and with auto-reloader in place and set to 20 mins. Like I said, my recollection of others' experiences are that they were intermittent and un-reproducible and therefore merely academic in their postings.

To take the Microsoft view, it is now a 'feature' as it is well documented bug. 👿

the 30mins was tested by scientific method way back when... unless the TimeoutLength has changed recently, my 20 minute reloadEvery on a tab has that defeated -- but -- I will test again by setting reloadEvery/20mins on this thread and walking away for 35 minutes, stating in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

40+minutes of no ASC activity of any kind... just clicked 'Reply' and here I am happily composing... let's see if it posts...

I pick 14 minutes for auto-reply. This gives me two tries to get the reload to happen. ASC has this annoying habit of failing to load a page. Over a couple of hours you are "bound" to get a page reload failure and you get timed out. 20 minutes is too close to the wire for me. Hence, it's important to pick a page that will reload reliably.

In the prior release of Jive, ASC had this feature that for Firefox it didn't time out but for Safari did time out. This release of jive fixed this feature. 😢

I have not had the 'annoying' problems you describe, but without using identical pages as the reload home base, we cannot accurately compare, methinks. I have gone much longer than 2 hours without attending to ASC - like being gone from the house for hours at a time - and not been offLogged. my 'old reliable' page is Using ASC. it serves as the reload and a static list to goto threads via CMD+click > open in a new tab > close the tab when done > repeat as needed.

the method employed currently for holding the timer is a cookie (I delved into the issue well back when I was a curious cat) but I failed to record the name of it or have forgotten where I put it (Alzheimer's dementia maybe 😕). The actual workings is that every time one uses a true HTML hyperlink (not a JavaScript function link) the StartTime is reset in the cookie - I watched it happen in my testing as the list of cookies has the feature of showing the 'expiration DateTime' plainly when one clicks the item in the list. I did not drill down into the cookie's code to find where the TimeoutLength was stored however, as I already had deduced the 30 minutes.

I have no experience with the issue in earlier JiveWare versions, but it seems plausible that Jive would have began with = write a cookie IF one's UserAgent was Safari - and ignored or failedto write a cookie if UserAgent was Firefox or some other. An update would have the fixing of this pretty high on the punch list I imagine.

How right you are. A cookie labelled s_ppv seems to have an expiry time 30 minutes after the last activity. Rather than using a page reloader I leave an open reply to a random post. This seems to refresh the cookie after 20 minutes (perhaps when it auto-saves) and I can stay logged in for days! 😎

Don't give up. asfahan does not exist. Ignore the glitches in these forums. Time-Out may be the problem.

When I am composing a reply, I find the best way is to use Pages or TextEdit as I think and type.

Then 'Select All' of your Pages or TextEdit reply (command a) and 'Copy' (command c).

Go back to Apple Support Communities and log in.

Go to the Discussion and click on Reply.

Command v to Paste your reply

1. opening this compose pane just after login -
   1. cookie creation = ± 08:59
   2. cookie expiration = ± 09:29
2. check cookie @ ± 09:29
   1. cookie expiration = ±09:49
   2. 09:49 - 30 = 09:19
   3. 09: 19 - 20 = 08:59
3. check cookie ...... NOW (±09:37)

   cookie expiration = ±09:59

CONCLUSION:

1. open compose pane resets cookie "s_ppv" timer after 20 minutes
2. something resets the timer to +30 minutes at it's initial (normal) expiration time
3. THUS, there are TWO resetTimers going on with an open compose pane
4. PERHAPS, my actions in composing affected the initial(normal) reset, but I weary of waiting those long minutes to test

ODDLY... what started my quest was just what seems to be NOT occurring = being timed out while composing a reply!! If I were to publish a conclusion regarding this mystery, I would say "Jive fixed the doggone timeout bug and nobody at Apple saw fit to announce it to we unpaid minions" - seems we may have been laboring for some time (how long have you been employing your little trick?) under the impression that there remained a bug to be worked around = unannounced log-off while composing a post

Speaking of camels, remember the very FIRST CD-ROM interactive - created on a Mac - using that new-fangled thing called MacroMedia Director? From Alice to Ocean - the journey of one girl, Robyn Davidson, her dog & four camels from Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia to the West Coast - I remember being gobsmacked by Ayer's Rock - an asteroid? God's joke? As I recall, this title was a BIG DEAL at the WWDC in 1992 (or 93) with Steve introducing Rick Smolan, the photographer and interactive developer. It came as a coffee table book / CDROM combo. I still have 'em (they are still in print, BTW) and this NEW Technology inspired my career for the next 25 years!! == leading me to this very moment!
