Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

As I posted earlier, when this happens to me, I open Sys Prefs/Accessibility and click the Invert Colors option, then restoring it to default. This clears the color problem. It's a workaround at best. However, It seems that I run into this problem right after a permission repair. A restart of the computer seems to clear up the problem. Go figure ~

Mac Mini 2014 i5

2.8 GHz 8GB Fusion

Acer K272HUL 27" display @ 2560x1440 60hz

Mini displayport to Displayport cable (no adapter)

OS 10.10.4

I've decided to keep the Mini and see what happens with future updates.

So when powering up my Mac there is no signal to the monitor. I just wait a few moments knowing that Yosemite is at the log-in screen, I enter my password "blindly" and press enter. After a moment the signal to the monitor begins and boots up quickly. This is my work around.

In system preferences I set my monitor to not sleep and use a minimalist blackish screen saver.

As dumbfounded as I am at this no signal/wake problem that Apple refuses to acknowledge, I need this computer and enjoy it immensely otherwise. There is no other option for me as I cannot upgrade to an iMac nor go PC.

Thanks. After 5 days this Energy Saver config has continued working for me. No DVI option so was getting desperate! 1 month old Mac-Mini (but still "late 2014" model) with LG L246WHX monitor, HDMI to HDMI. Worked fine on default with previous (6 yr old) Mac-Mini. Yet another Yosemite peculiarity - known better by my wife as "your cemetery" as by no means first problem.

I just wanted to chime in and let everyone know this issue is not relegated to Mac Mini, my 2010 Mac Pro is having the same exact sleep issue with my 2015 Asus monitor.

I may try the Dvi>Hdmi fix suggested here but it's pretty disappointing that Apple is still having compatibility issues in this day and age.

I have a Philips TV using a HDMI connection from a late-2014 mini (running OS 10.10.4) to the tv and have to turn it on each time when I wake the mini. I thought I'd get around this problem by buying a monitor. I bought an ASUS VS229HP monitor and didn't experience the wake-up problem others have identified but periodically it would wake up with a green tint screen. I called ASUS and they said take it back and get another one. I did and the same thing happened. I wish I had read this thread before returning the ASUS because I would have tried the min-Display to VGA cable to see if the green tint screen would have still occurred before returning it.

When I told the 4th Apple Care Senior Advisor about this forum she got pretty rude and gave me a lecture about how this could not be the same problem that everyone on here could be and that just because there was a lot of people on this forum having the problem that does not mean it is happening a lot.

Same response I got from my 2nd phone consultant. The 3rd one was less dismissive, worked with me as I input the terminal code from another forum on the topic (next-to-last comment). Too soon to know if this code fixes the issue, since it has been intermittent. Case ID: 831224439

There are 12735 Views of that forum, 45793 Views and 236 Replies on this one. Just my/your problem???😠

The Apple salesperson who sold me Mini (former iMac user) convinced me to get HDMI cable, rather than DVI/HDMI adapter, as being quicker, more efficient. Yosemite 10.10.4; Samsung monitor

Now 46235 Views, up from 45793 Views 4 days ago.😮 I thought I'd be returning here to say the code inserted via terminal had solved my problem. But 4 days on and it's happened again. This time I didn't need to use the computer immediately, so I just walked away. When I came back a few hours later, it woke from touch of mouse. Oddly, one of my several open windows now doesn't respond in any tab, thought the other windows seem fine. related?

I've been trouble shooting this wake display issue everyone has been having for a few months now. I have yet to resolve the problem, but I think I have narrowed it down to the GPU driver. When the tv/monitor is turned off OS X disables the GPU to conserve energy. The driver on the other hand remains loaded, idle, and waiting for the GPU to respond. The problem is that when the tv/monitor is off (usually for an extended period of time) the driver may timeout or stop responding. The only way to reload the driver in this case is to restart the mini.

A simple solution to this FROM APPLE would be to simply allow the GPU to continue to run while the display is off. Remote Desktop runs like an Apple 2 with out the GPU anyway. After all what's the point in saving energy if you can't use the system.

This is just me basically venting my frustrations about this completely avoidable issue with the simplest of solutions that Apple seems to not give a crap about since it is from what I can tell been an issue with OS X for quite some time now. As far back as 2012 at least.

Update! I was given a Mac Mini in early July this year, with a Samsung monitor, and I have had ongoing problems with the monitor not waking up from sleep, like everyone else in this thread. Like a couple of recent posters, I have also had issues with the monitor not waking up after I turn the computer off and on again due to the problem.

I spoke with Apple Support a few minutes ago and said "I know this is a known issue. I have seven support forum threads and nine case numbers in front of me for this problem. Can you please speak to your engineers and see if there is a fix for this?" They admitted that it's a known issue and stated that engineers are working on the problem but there is no fix yet. They recommended setting the computer to require a password to wake up from sleep, because if you enter your password, even though the screen will be black when you enter the password, the computer will wake up after the password entry. I will see if this works.

They stated that a fix will probably come up with the next OS X Yosemite update, which will likely be just before Apple releases new products in September. So, this issue *should* be fixed by the end of September. In the meantime, hopefully the password thing will work.
