Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Just wanted to chime in to say I'm having the same issue.

Mid-2011 Mac Mini, 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM

Yosemite 10.10.5

HP w2207 LCD Monitor

connected from Mac mini via [HDMI to DVI converter] to [DVI cable] to monitor

I set the MM to turn off the monitor after X minutes, but the hard drives are set to never go to sleep.

Monitor goes into sleep mode (amber LED), but when I try to wake it, it says there is no signal from either input.

I've tried tapping the MM power button, and pressing all the keyboard keys, as well as tapping and clicking my Magic Trackpad, etc. nothing wakes the display.

i Turn it off and on, but it fails to detect any input signals, so it goes back to sleep.

MM is responsive, as I've used shortcuts that show its awake and still functional. I've also setup VNC on the MM and I am able to log in and continue to use the MM, despite the display being asleep. So I guess it's just a matter of the MM not being able to send a 'wake up' signal to the LCD?

SOMETIMES after some key and button smashing, the LCD WILL detect a signal and come back on, but I have been unable to recreate this miracle with any consistency. Only sure way to get the LCD back on is with a hard reboot.

I've also done a P-RAM clear, no difference.

i read someone got it working by using a HDMI to DVI cable (and eliminating the need for the converter). So I'm going to try that next...

The only thing I've found that works is swapping the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable I was using for a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI active adapter (connected to an ordinary HDMI cable). An active adapter keeps the signal "online" as far as the Mini is concerned and now my dual monitors wake without fail.

2014 Mac Mini i5

2.8 GHz, 8GB, Fusion

Acer K272HUL 27" display @ 2560x1440 60hz

Mini displayport to Displayport cable (no adapter)

OSX 10.11 El Capitan

Just so everybody knows, the El Capitan "update" did not fix this problem. My monitor still does not get a signal when powering ON my Mac. I still have to enter my login password "in the dark" and as soon as OSX starts loading my monitor finally comes on.

So this is a bit odd for an older post to spring back to life.

I purchased my MM in January of this year. After a few days of consulting with other forumers, I decided to return it while I was still within my return period. After keeping a close eye on the forums, it seemed that people were reporting the issue to be resolved with the last update of Yosemite (at least after the update that occurred after January), so I headed to the Apple store to repurchase the MM. And voila, issue resolved.

I recently updated my MM with El Capitan the day after its release, and as far as I can tell, there are no issues regarding the MM waking up my monitor via direct HDMI>HDMI connection. Even when the computer returns to sleep, without me entering the password, the computer will re-awaken after pressing on the keyboard or trackpad.

This is just a guess here, but the issues some of you are (re)experiencing may be model specific. It might be helpful to post your specific models to see if there is a correlation between the two. I'm not at home at the moment, but I guess I have whatever model was available at the end of January/early February.

Mine is a new Mac Mini purchased online from Apple late September this year. It was waking the monitor quickly (Acer and also new, which I tried out on my old Mac Mini - late 2009 - before the new MM was delivered) while it was running Yosemite but I noticed it needed more persuading after installing El Capitan the following week. It does wake up OK but takes much more than the couple of seconds it took with Yosemite. Both my keyboard and mouse are wired (have tried a few mice!) and connection to monitor is HDMI.

I don't have any problems when I boot up the MM and switch on the monitor, nor do I have any problem if I turn the monitor off while the computer is sleepng and then turn it on again when I wake it.

Mac Mini November 2014. Just upgraded to El Capitan 10.11

Viewsonic VP2770-LED connected HDMI(mac) to HDMI(Monitor). Connected with an Amazon Basics HDMI cable

Viewsonic input set to HDMI.

Wireless Keyboard and trackpad. Both Apple.

Mac wakes up from deep (LED off) or short(LED pulsing) sleeps to LED solid - after keyboard press or trackpad click

Viewsonic comes out of power saving mode (LED turns from amber to blue)

No problems after upgrade from Yosemite. However like Sybil Ann Chick it does take 2/3 seconds longer to spring into life

Mine is taking a bit longer than that, maybe only up to 10 seconds in total but it seems a LOT longer waiting for it to happen!

Just put MM to sleep to go and do something else so I could time it. Monitor sensed this and went into powersave mode with amber light.

Came back and tapped keyboard. MM woke up (solid light) and almost immediately the monitor light turned blue. Then I had to wait a further 6-7 seconds for the computer screen to be displayed whereas with Yosemite it was almost immediate.

Looking on Console, there are numerous repeated messages regarding WindowServer, alternately for Display and GLCompositor with others between them, over the time it was taking for the monitor to display anything, which makes me think they've changed something in El Capitan from what it was in Yosemite.

Yup. Same problem here. Just bought a new Mac mini to replace one from 2010 (which is now being used in my home office). I got it primarily for its ability to AirPlay to my Apple TV. I'm using the same monitor I did with my old Mac mini (Acer H233H) and am having the very same problem when waking from sleep. I've tried every suggestion here and nothing works. My inelegant workaround is this:

Press the spacebar to wake up the Mac mini.

Monitor wakes up with "No Signal".

Turn off the monitor.

Turn on the monitor.

Press Input on the front of the monitor. Sometimes this brings up the display; sometimes I need to cycle through the inputs until HDMI comes up again.

Desktop appears.

Wish we could bring Steve back from the dead. So many things have gone wrong at Apple since he left us.
