Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

El Morche, I'm now with your method. Unchecked the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". I'll come back with the update later on.

Hi all,

No luck.
Tried smashing the keystroke repeatedly as per matt1888 method, still not working on mine.

The working method is, whem the computer sleep (the CPU LED's deeming), punch a single keystroke will wake up the CPU but "Cable disconnected" still appearing on the screen. (smashing keystroke repeatedly does not working for me even in this stage).

I have to turn off and on the power button on the monitor, and puch a single or soflty repeatedly will waking up the monitor.

🙂 oh dear...

Same issue here.

2014 MacMini connected via HDMI directly to my Sony TV. Have tried a number of HDMI cables which work fine with other devidces, and none fix the issue on the MacMini.

Nothing wakes up the HDMI port, other than removing the cable and then plugging back in.

Seriously inhibits its usefulness as a media device if I have to cable cycle everytime I want to use.

Mac Mini 2014, Intel Iris graphics card, same problems.

I had the energy saver settings all turned off and it still occurred. Steps to reproduce:

* Connect Mac Mini to a monitor / TV via HDMI.

* Turn off monitor / TV for an extended period of time, but leave Mac Mini on.

* Return a few hours later and the Mac Mini has issues sending a signal over HDMI.

When the Mac Mini was in this state, I swapped out different HDMI cables and the issue would not correct itself. I would turn the monitor / TV off and unplug then reconnect and the issue would not correct itself. I swapped out a different HDMI AND a different monitor / TV and the issue would still not correct itself.

To me, it seems the Mac Mini's graphics controller runs into a memory leak issue if no external source is present for an extended period of time. Possibly related to HDMI's copy protection (HDCP). Searching for this issue turns up thousands of posts from 2012 Mac Mini owners too which seemed to be corrected by a firmware fix at some point. However, Apple seems to have let this bug slip back in. One of the biggest selling features of the Mac Mini is the HDMI port and its media center capabilities. Seeing as many people are running into this issue, and I personally ran into it within a day of use, you have to wonder what type of QA testing Apple puts its machines through.

Somebody please reply to this thread once the issue is fixed.

It has been hit or miss from my experience after the update. I've got a 2014 i7 3GHz Mac Mini. At first it was doing great, no waking issues, but occasionally I have to still power cycle my receiver and/or TV after either moving the mouse or using the keyboard. Today I've experienced graphical artefacts and screen flashing to black, which previous to this update I hadn't seen.

Yeah, I'm really sorry to say that after testing for a little longer I found that 10.10.1 does not work consistently. This is so frustrating. Why are Apple not able to roll out a robust fix for this issue?! Seems like such a simple piece of functionality for a computer which fundamentally relies on having an external monitor. I'm really disappointed with the Mac mini so far, no least because it crashes every time I restart it as well. So many issues.

Well, I switched from an HDMI cable to a VGA and that works a LOT better. The display does not come back when I move the mouse, but if I hit a key on the keyboard, the display wakes in 1-2 seconds. That's much better than not waking at all, plus I think the monitor is performing better as well. Go figure... Hope this helps someone else.... Still, I hope this is something Apple will fix soon...
