Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

I confirm the same issue when using new Mac Mini (Yosemite 10.10.1) and AOC external monitor connected through HDMI.

More than 1 month passed since Yosemite was released and no patch for this bug so far.

I hope it is not a hardware issue and a solution will be provided soon, otherwise I'll consider complaining my Mac to reclaim my money.

Apple, shame on you!

Again... If using the new mini with a TV.. after a few weeks of using it this way I've had success each time. Hit return before going to your hdmi connection on the TV. If it's still not awake use the display button on the tv remote to move to another hdmi source. Then move back to the hdmi port that the mini is connected to. Simple if not a bit annoying but it's worked a dozen times in a row for me now.

Just add me to the list--new, 2014 Mac Mini that when waking up from sleep will not reliably wake the HDMI connection to a TV. And given that the sole purpose of the this Mini is to stream video to the TV, that pretty much ***ks. It's particularly frustrating because a 3rd gen Apple TV connected by HDMI to the same TV has zero problems waking up the TV. ZERO!

I have had about a 60% success rate by first waking the Mini (typing a character on the keyboard connected to it), waiting a few seconds, and then cycling through all the inputs on the TV. Other times I need to reboot the Mini.

Given the other things I've read in these forums about other wake-up related problems on the 2014 Mini, I have to wonder how seriously Apple takes this little desktop computer.

I have the same generation of Mini and Apple TV as you and have similar problems. I have tried an SMC reset (basically removing the power cable from the Mini for a minute or two and plugging it back in), which worked for a few days, but still have the same Mini specific issue. My previous Mac was connected to the same receiver via DVI to HDMI (but it was running 10.6) and had no issues at all, so I don't believe that it's my receiver or other hardware. My ATV3 has been rock solid with no issues like this. The only things that I can do to wake it up are exactly what you are doing, ie, switching HDMIs around and/or power cycling. At this point, I'm waiting for another update from Apple to remedy the issue, as 10.10.1 did not fix it.

Like the other users here I've connected the Mac Mini to my Acer LED display using an HDMI cable. Now, 12 hours into ownership I'm experiencing unresolved problems? Dumb. I've used a PC user over twenty years without problems waking up my computer. My first experience owning a Mac (14' Mac Min 2.6Ghz) and I can't even wake my computer from its sleep. Hopefully Apple has a solution.

I may know whats going on with the wake from sleep issue. I have a Mac Mini 2012 but this fix (see below) should work on any product running 10.8.2 Mine is at 10.10.1 and it worked. First off you can tell if your Mac Mini is in sleep mode by looking at the small light on the front of the Mini. If its pulsing... going from bright to dim its in sleep mode. If you put your Mac in sleep mode, or it goes into sleep mode it will wake from sleep BUT ONLY for the first 4 hours. After 4 hours it will go into what is known as "safe sleep". The light on the front will be off and you won't be able to wake your Mac. The only way to wake the Mac when in safe sleep is to hit the power button and then wait a minute or longer as your system will need to pull the data from the disk and load to ram. This is causing the issue where its not waking from sleep. You can move your mouse or hit the keys all you want but it won't wake from sleep. This is a real pain as you have to press the power button on the back of the Mac mini and wait for the system to come out of its slumber. Here's what Apple says:

With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices. This is normal behavior for the following models:

  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 and later)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
  • iMac (Late 2012 and later)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)

I too am having this problem. Only it is with the thunderbolt to VGA cable that is not waking up the projector. The HDMI connected to my Acer display is waking up from sleep but the projector will not wake up without unplugging and plugging it back in. Also today I experienced the funky screen color that an earlier post had a picture of. Also, my mac mini seems to be missing the Computer sleep slider under the energy saver settings. Is this normal? I have reinstalled OS X and to no avail the projector still does not wake from sleep. However, my Macbook Air wakes the projector just fine. This was the first time the Mac booted up and it has had the problem from the start.

I have a possible solution from an apple tech guy.

In system/Library/LaunchAgents

and

System/Library/LaunchDaemons

note which apps have files in these 2 directories

Do the same in users/library

copy the files to folders on the desktop with those names (agents & daemons)

remove the applications and associated files one at a time and see if the problem goes away

be sure the mac sleeps for at least an hour each time you do this to see if it wakes up properly

the last program removed will be the offender

In my case it was AVAST virus software. Deleted the program removed the files from the system Library and the user library as well and no more issues.

Let me know if this helps

I normally screen share my Mac Mini to my MacBook but the other day when I went to use it with my TV all I got was a black screen. After restarting my Mac Mini and getting the display to work I tried this and it seems to have worked so far:-

When you have the Mac Mini display on your TV screen switch the TV to another input source. Then put the Mac Mini to sleep (I did this via screen sharing the Mac Mini to my MacBook). Wake the Mac Mini after a short time and then select the relevant HDMI input on your TV.

Since then I have been able to get a display via HDMI on my TV with no problem.

Try this and see if it works for you.

Same problem. Getting frustrated. The only alternative that could possibly work is to change the energy saver settings. System Preferences>Energy Saver then change "Turn display off after:" to NEVER. Haven't had a chance to see the results yet but it's worth a try. Obviously this option will not be energy efficient and possibly diminish the life of your display.
