imac won't play DVDs in Yosemite
Since I upgraded to Yosemite DVDs won't play. I put one in. It makes a wheezing noise and spits all disks back out. What is the problem/solution?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

I want to add a large "DITTO" to these posts. I recently upgraded to Yosemite, and now sincerely wish I had not done so. My DVD reader seems to be inop although it will read CDs with no issue. When I insert a DVD it whirrs a moment or two, and then ejects. I expected to see some fix on line here, but am amazed that the problem persists. Surely the brains at Apple are on it, right? I have a 2009 iMac and love it, but this is a non-starter.
Count me in! I have the same problem! My DVD just refused to stay in the drive and pops out 5 seconds after it stays in there! So annoying. I'm surprised that Apple fails to provide any feedback/solutions on such a big issue!
The same with me too. iMac mid-2011 upgraded to Yosemite and now DVD reader just spins and kicks them out. Worked fine previous version of the OS...
Hi Bobbylon,
I have the same issue, unfortunately. I have done some digging in DiskUtility, I think this is a software issue, see my post here: DVDs not playing since Yosemite upgrade; some background information
Can you please confirm that you see the same?
Thanks in advance,
Laszlo
Incredible. Please explain how you upgraded your Powerbook to Yosemite?
I have 2 iMacs. Both worked fine until the Yosemite upgrade. Now neither dvd works. This is an Apple issue that they are not willing to admit on their failed rollout.
Same problem here, unable to use DVDs since yosemite installed, come on Apple I have a wedding video that needs putting on a DVD. lets have a solution 😟
No Apple here, we are just users.
Borrow a simple external DVD.
Hi Lex,
Here is my problem: I have tried that. The external player that works on the other MacBookPro and on the MacMini (both running on 10.9, so no Yosemite there), shows the same issue on this MacBoobkPro: it does not recognize the very same DVD it does on the others.
This is clearly not a drive failure issue, nor it is a DVD issue, but bad programming on Apple's behalf.
They really need to fix it, or tell us how we can fix it....

I will have to get the video burnt elsewhere in this case but why have a DVD/CD drive that you can't use because of an upgrade to the OS, it needs sorting, If theres no Apple here why is it called Apple Support and the web site is Apple Inc?
I didn't feel like hauling in my 27" Imac to determine that the Superdrive had NOT failed. I sure as **** wasn't going to give Applecare any cash for a problem of their creation.
I bit the bullet and bought an external superdrive. It does work on DVD playing of commercial disks. I haven't tried burning any files using Toast yet.
I still think it is beyond lame that Apple has been 100% silent on an obvious problem. Seems clear there is no solution forthcoming from the "geniuses".
As far as I am concerned Yosemite is barely an ant hill. Needless upgrade. Unfortunately now I have the same level of jaded mistrust in Apple compentence that I do for Windows.
What I would like to see is one of the Apple staff admit that this is a problem and that there is no solution. The silence on this is embarassing
Toast on a Yosemite mac?
Lex you said no Apple here ..
If theres no Apple here why is it called Apple Support and the web site is Apple Inc? also how or who do I contact to discuss this problem? have you a web link or email address?
Apple is just the provider. No Apple here. Apple is in Apple SUPPORT, not in the "Apple" forum. Read the Terms&conditions of the forum.
Just users here. Apple can be reached at every website under "support".

Not sure why the drive ejects the DVD disc, but I am experiencing a similar problem under Yosemite.
When I insert a non-commercial DVD (burned using my Mac Pro), the disc spins up, the player opens but no end of pressing Play or Enter will load the opening menu.
The only way I got it to play was to go to the mounted DVD disc (in Finder), and drag the VIDEO_TS folder onto the DVD icon.
That then loaded the DVD's opening menu and I was able to watch.
