Permissions problem when importing file in Final Cut Pro X 10.1.3

Hi guys!!

Today, like all days, I opened up my Final Cut Pro X version 10.1.3 and created a new Library and new project. Then I selected "Import Files" and I checked all the files I needed. Last I clicked on import selected files and I received this error:

"Directory Not Writable. The chosen directory is not writable."

This is a real tragedy. I have to start an important project and I can't use the program at all.

This is what I tried so far:

- Checked Macintosh HD permissions - Done - No problems

- I use an external HD as my scratch disk - Checked - No problems

- Tried to create a new project on a new HDD - Same error

- Checked Read / Write permissions on Macintosh HD and on footage folders - No problems

This is my Mac:

- iMac 21,5" Mid 2011

- Core i5 2,7 GHz

- 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

- AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB

- HDD 1TB

- 2nd External HDD WD My Book 3 TB USB 3.0

- OS Yosemite 10.10

I'm in panic. And I really don't know how to resolve this problem....

okay so.....after 1.5 hours on the phone with applecare bouncing from OS to Pro Apps team we got a fix for me anyway.

opened FCPX with opt+command and agreed to delete preferences upon launch. After that i was able to import everything

im still going to reinstall this whole thing

Hi, I had a similar problem and here's how I fixed it (Well it worked for me!)

Select your hard drive in finder, right click and choose 'Get info', when the panel appears, be sure the lock icon (Bottom right of panel) is unlocked and then change permissions for everyone to 'Read and Write" Click lock again. Hope this works for someone else!

Trashing Final Cut Preferences solved the problem for me. Here's how:

1. Go to Finder

2. Hold 'option' key and click Go in top bar

3. Open Library>preferences folder

4. Trash com.apple.FinalCut.LSShared FileList.plist

5. Trash com.apple.FinalCut.plist

6. Trash com.apple.FinalCut.UserDestinations.plist

7. Empty trash

8. Restart FCPX

SSimpler way is to hold Opt-Cmd as you launch the application. You get a dialog that trashes the preferences.

Hello everybody. I'm using first time here and my english little bit bad.

I get this issue 🙂 i have two external HDD. First 1TB WD Elements and 2TB WD Elements. Using mostly first HDD and fulled. I get 2 TB but one week after broke 😕 and WD send me new 2TB HDD, well and i plug-play. Open the final cut but not writing but same time i plugged Ext. HDD final cut will writing.

Very interesting. Maybe El Capitan changed this issue. I hope.

Just guessing here... I suspect your second disk may be formatted as NTFS. You need to format it as MacOS Extended.

I tried all format but showing same error 🙂 and i did exFat because all files copyed windows. Also i'm not use bootcamp, i have use two device, win - mac.

I just ran into this problem today . If you hold option + cmd + click on final cut to open app. it will ask you if you want to "delete preferences". this won't affect your existing FCP library. once you do that, you should be able to import video again.
