BUG in process suhelperd: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

Hello,

I just formatted my MacBook Pro and installed a fresh installation of Yosemite. I always have this bug which makes my log file full:

BUG in process suhelperd[193]: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

I can give you a hint that it's maybe about Software Updater Helper.. but dunno how to solve it.

Thanks,

JF

Hi,

I also have the issue of a Mac Mini (10.10.1) that can't come back after sleep nor boot up correctly.

It is a brand new Mac (not an upgrade).

When it crashed (waking up) I must force-restart it (every time).

If I let it boot normally, it freezes halway

If I zap the PRam, It boots up (until the next sleep/death).

I am one of the IT people at a junior college and all are Macs have been updated to Yosemite. We jumped the gun and upgraded at 10.10.0 and now we are all on 10.10.2. We have had the problem of "frozen" startup sequences and most if not all of our machines. I have contacted Apple and they can't seem to identify an issue and they didn't seem to anxious to dive in to find one. From what I can see by looking in the log and looking while the machine boots to verbose mode I am noticing many items that point to a network problem (these machines use a wireless connection so they are not networked at bootup) which makes me believe that it would be a hardware issue but it would be very unlikely that hundreds of machines all have the same hardware problem. These machines are bound to a Windows AD and from what i've seen may be the cause of the problem. Mainly I am getting a the "Bug in suhelperd" message. Any assistance to resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. All these machines use a fresh 10.10.2 install. On that note I have found a few tips to temporary get past the issue. Zapping the PRAM then booting into single use mode then running /sbin/fsck -fy then reboot. When that doesn't work I will zap the PRAM again and boot into verbose mode. If that still doesn't work I will zap the PRAM and boot into safe boot. If all those don't work I will turn the machine off and let it sit for a half hour. Some isolated cases non of those work and I will have to do an archive and install.

Side note: These are 2010-2012 MacBook Pros and iMacs.

I posted three messages before yours, zmclearan, and as of yet, nobody has followed my request for information.

Are these computers connected via wired or wireless? If so, what kind of access point/router are they connecting to?

Please try supplying the details I requested for a couple of machines; there might be a trend we can spot.

These computers are using both wired and wireless networks. The wireless networks use AD authentication and the wired network is automatically connected to the domain. The wireless network is a/b/n as well as using 802.11x.

Knowing that you're seeing this problem on wired AND on Macs with Atheros wireless devices are two things that weren't discernable from the thread before. The only other thing I was looking for was the make, model of the switch/access point/router the computers are using. I doubt that's the issue, but if there was a commonality of chipsets on that end, it could still mean something.

Thanks for answering; seems like a probable wild-goose chase.

I spoke with a couple Apple support reps along with an Apple engineer and they said they became aware of the issue a few weeks ago. They also mentioned it is one of their top priorities to get resolved and they also mentioned that we should expect a resolution soon. They also gave me a work around that didn't full help me but it may help you. I also have put together a workaround of my own. Both will be included after this paragraph.

Apple work around:

CMD S - Single User Mode

$ /sbin/mount -uw /

$ rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*

$ rm /private/var/db/BootCache.playlist

$ reboot

My work around

OPT CMD P R - Reset PRAM - 3 Times

On the 3rd "dong" boot into Single User Mode (CMD S)

Code

$ /sbin/mount -uw /

$ rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*

$ rm /private/var/db/BootCache.playlist

$ Shutdown -r now

Upon reboot

CMD V - Verbose mode

Thanks, it's good to know that maybe Apple is looking into this. However, their interim solution didn't work for me.

Yosemite in general has been pretty unstable. I have had it simply freeze on me numerous times, without any useful console messages, usually in Safari. Yesterday I was having tons of issues with screenshots, quick look and preview, and had to restart. When I checked the console I saw all these subhelperd messages. This is not the first issue I have had with the app store.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) which used to be perfectly stable before upgrading. I previously suspected a graphics card switching issue. Now all I know is that Apple's release testing procedures are evidently insufficient. I've tried the genius bar but I usually know more about any problem than they do. Right now I'm waffling between living with intermittent crashes and freezes or downgrading.

Hi all,

Jumping in as I've about given up on my iMac due to the slowness, slow responsiveness of apps to launch, windows to open etc and finally looked into it today. I have the same error you guys are getting and it says it has occurred 127 times. I've got a iMac with Yosemite as you can tell below. I'm using wireless Uverse supplied router.

error: kernel[0]: BUG in process suhelperd[185]: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

System Version: OS X 10.10.2 (14C109)

Kernel Version: Darwin 14.1.0

Boot Volume: Macintosh HD

Would love for Apple to fix this asap. Thanks for bringing it to their attention.

Same issue here..

Early 2008 Mac Pro

No wifi

iTunes not starting (seems to be started, but nothing happened)-> forced shutdown -> try start again -> dock icon bounces forever..

Safari -> do the same. If I try reboot my mac, it hangs.. forced reboot -> everything works again.

Log:

12.2.2015 8.04.38,000 kernel[0]: BUG in process suhelperd[234]: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

I will probably not bother to do fresh install to Yosemite?

Feb 18, 2015 5:55 AM in response to Machist

I did fresh install of Yosemite for:

Mac Pro (Trash can)

Wifi off

Daily freezes --> Yosemite reinstalled yesterday.

Still every time I open App Store I get hundreds lines of:

kernel: BUG in process suhelperd[X]: over-released legacy external boost assertions (1 total, 1 external, 0 legacy-external)

But it have not freezed yet after fresh install (fingers crossed).
