iMac 2014 5K Bluetooth Trackpad Problem after sleep

Hi all,


I was all excited to get my new iMac 2014 5K two days ago. The display is simply stunning. I am however struggling with a trackpad problem and had several support calls with Apple already.


After the iMac goes into sleep (and enters deep sleep after circa 2-3 minutes), it cannot be woken up with trackpad or keyboard anymore, After pressing the power button, it turns on again (no need of restart). The trackpad is by then however useless. The pointer movements are extremely slow and none of the gestures work. I tried the following instructions in different forums but none of them worked. It cannot be that all new iMac 2014 users are having this problem!


  1. Unpairing and pairing the bluetooth devices
  2. PRAM reset (multiple times)
  3. SMC reset (multiple times)
  4. Safe boot
  5. Deleting system plist files and restarting
  6. Changing batteries of trackpad.
  7. Turning wifi off (between that I am connected otherwise at 5Ghz with 802.11ac)
  8. Turning off all devices in the house that transmits signals (router, DECT phone etc)
  9. Testing Trackpad with Macbook Air with Yosemite installed (sleep and trackpad works fine with it)
  10. SSD format and reinstalling Yosemite (and no further apps on top of it). This means iMac is as good as out of the box with only Apple bluetooth keyboard and trackpad connected.


After the problem starts I see the following messages in Error log

The day before I got the iMac 5K, I sold my perfectly working Late 2013 iMac with Yosemite on it. It had no issues with trackpad.

There people mostly complain about latency and not the sleep problem. Does anyone else face this problem with the new iMac and Yosemite?

I have a very similar problem. Neither my magic mouse nor track pad gestures work (although I am able to use the basic features of the mouse--point, click, scroll, right-click). Unlike your problem, however, the problem first presented on my mid-2011 27 inch iMac and then occurred again when I upgraded to the 5K iMac late last year. Also, unlike your problem, my problem is completely unrelated to sleep mode. The devices initially worked when I set up the computer but fail shortly thereafter as I began to download previously purchased software from the Apple store. Of note, I have completely erased both hard drives several times but ultimately to no avail. I also spent HOURS on the phone with several different members of Apple's tech support who ultimately couldn't help me. I did all the things described in this thread but no luck. Rebooting, zapping the PRAM, turning on and off wireless, deleting then repairing the blue tooth connections, etc. etc. I am probably wrong about this but I was convinced that the problem had to do with some setting or software incompatibility. As I said, the problem started each time shortly after resetting up the computer after I had downloaded software from the Apple store and had made a few setting changes via System Preferences. To say that I am frustrated doesn't begin to describe how I feel. Apple is well aware of the problem as I informed everyone I spoke to of the numerous messages on this and other support pages that go back years. What a disappointment. The only solution I have come up with has been to turn off both the magic mouse and trackpad and purchase a third party wired mouse. Viva the 1980's.

All, this problem only started after the Yosemite software was released. I have an older imac (4 years old) and the mouse/trackpad had no issues waking computer after going to sleep until I installed Yosemite upgrade. I have to use the keyboard to wake computer and neither bluetooth trackpad or magic mouse work.

With the trackpad, I have to push the power button on the side and it connects. With the magic mouse, I have to go to settings and set it up like a new mouse every day. This issue doesn't happen when I shut the computer down completely and start over the next day but I don't always remember or want to do it that way.

Although I am using a Magic Mouse, the interaction with Bluetooth should be the same.


Followed the workaround on this discussion thread, where you turn off/on your WiFi.

Maybe it is the power save feature in Yosemite.. Hoping someone in Apple will pick up on this.


Environment:

- Early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15"

- OSX Yosemite 10.10.2

- Magic Mouse

- Hardly ever shutdown/reboot

- Close the lid to travel between work and home

VERY late to this party... just had my first experience with this issue this morning;


Allowed my iMac 5K to sleep naturally vs 'forced' sleep. This morning used either keyboard or mouse (Magic Keyboard and/or Magic Trackpad 2 - both of these are the new rechargeable/force touch units) to wake as usual and nothing. The keyboard did wake the machine but did not allow for any text input for password.


Had to kill the power and restart - all OK afterward.


My specs are:


Late 2014 iMac 5K

4GHz i7

32GB RAM

AMD R9 M295X 4096MB

3TB Fusion Drive

OSX 10.11.1


I did read through a large majority of the posts and didn't see a definite fix.... did I miss something?

sounds like exactly like one of my 'incident'


so if you are having the same problem as i do, all i can say is start saving money for a new computer, this will not be solved by apple.

I've even get in contact with apple's executive office, still no solutions.


some key points:

1. apple probably will not admit the existence of the problem, they will most probably rule this to your environment/software.

though i have tested 9 other macs on the same spot with >12 different BT devices, only this one specific iMac has problem


2. if you check system log for those events, there will be none. there will be absolutely no log entry for those BT lag/disconnects. and then apple will run their 'diagnostics' and say they CAN'T find a problem.

so the computer didn't think this lag was abnormal, and then you ask the computer for abnormal events, certainly the computer will tell you everything's fine.


3. even if you take video+screen shots, they will not use it to identify the problem, some stores will just simply refuse to watch them




so the bottom line is,

whenever you bring this problem to apple, they will say the computer passed their diagnostics, there'll be no need to repair, IF there was a problem, it's due to your 'environment'. hence this problem will never be solved.
