How can I uninstall Shop Mate?

I agreed to install Shop Mate from some reason and now it's making life miserable.
How do I uninstall it? Where is it, how do I find it, and how can it be removed?

Thank you for the hand-holding.

Thank you Seventy One. I understand there is an app but the one I agreed to install has pirated my every move on the

internet in in its overly-ambitious desire to bring key-word shopping to me. I do not know where this "app" is located, only

know it's trade name, ShopMate. The developer site has a link to uninstall but - for a mac - it just delivers a few bars of

code that I don't know what to do with. Do you have another approach for me or do I need to have this conversation with

the developers?

Thank you for your helpful input and expertise.

Hello Karen,

I wish I could be more helpful but I fear I shall not be. Your description suggests there are other things working in the background. I did a quick search and came up with one supplier that offers shop mate that I would never buy from ... that is CNet. Two things come to mind. If you have the Easyfind app, it helps locate programs you want to get rid of. If not, it is available via App store and is a free app, well thought of in the communities. If you feed the App name (Do it both ways Shop Mate and Shop mate) into the program, it should dig out all the parts for you to delete. Read the instructions carefully. Ideally you should find its correctly spelt name in your applications folder

If you want to get in touch with the developers, this is the app store detail but I have made no progress finding the actual developer. Mariano Capezzani does not show up anywhere ...

I don't think I can offer more but to wish you well.

So pleased you found me helpful. Thank you for the star. Do let us know how you get on, when I read your progress, I (or others) may see ways to go further.

I don't think you have any adware or malware but just in case (more reading, I am afraid) these notes from Thomas Reed are worth going through, just in case you recognise something.

The Safe Mac » AdMedic

But be aware there is a caveat about a 'nasty' called 'downlite' with this page at the moment so if you think you see something write to this same thread first and I will check it out with the author.

It sounds like you accidentally installed adware in the process. It's included when you download from certain sites and gives you a chance to opt-out, but many users miss the notice.

The safest, most efficient way to locate and optionally delete all currently known adware is to use the AdwareMedic as seventy one recommended, which was written by one of the Forum's foremost malware gurus and a colleague of mine, thomas_r. If you have any problems downloading the file then you definitely have been infected and need to read About Downline adware.

To understand why this happened and how to avoid it in the future see John Galt's How to install adware.

Thank you MadMacs!

I'm grateful for the helpful information you shared with me. Frankly, using App to locate the beast

was essential and - once I learned that name was Shopy Mate - vs Shop Mate - I found it and deleted

it. Back in good standing with my uninterrupted browsing. Thank you again for your contribution to

my burgeoning awareness and knowledge of software download dangers. *shew*

sincerely,

Just to keep the Apple hosts happy, I need to point out that although tomas_r. is a colleague of mine and we do collaborate on Mac Malware almost daily, all donations are in support of his work and help defray the cost of keeping TheSafeMac web site going. Otherwise I'd have to post a disclaimer along with my recommendation.

Glad I could help you out with this one.

I had shopy mate installed, the way i got rid of it was to open up my safari preferences, then go to the safari extensions tab. There, you will find the option to delete shopy mate

Then you didn't get it all. Fastest, most efficient way is to run AdwareMedic to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware or just follow these instructions to manually remove the rest -- Adware Removal Guide : Buca Apps.

What worked for me is to open up Safari. Press Command+, (include the comma), or just open up preferences under safari in the toolbar. Next, click "extensions" at the top of the preferences. You can then select shopy mate and click uninstall. Also works for other annoying pop up ads or when your search engine is always yahoo even after you set it to google.

Sure, but that doesn't get it all. There are almost certainly other processes running in the background slowing your mac down. Take a look at Adware Removal Guide : Buca Apps for a list of other files, some of which you will almost certainly find. Or simply run AdwareMedic as hundreds of other users in this forum have to find and optionally delete all currently known adware.
