OS X Yosemite Keeps Crashing To Log-In Screen

Hi

I had previously been using the OS X Yosemite Beta and upgraded to the full version, but I have had nothing but problems with it. My MacBook Air keeps crashing back to the log-in screen. It happens in numerous ways - I could be opening an app, closing an app, reducing an app, or saving a document (etc) and then the screen flickers and goes back to the log-in screen.

I am running:

OS X Yosemite 10.10

1.7 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

500GB Storage

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Update:

So it's been a few days, I think the problem has gone away for me after updating to 10.10.2. The problem I described in an earlier post keeps happening though. 50% of the time my machine wakes from sleep, the keyboard (which is lit up after the wake) and mouse don't work leaving me with the only option, power off. It's not like I need to do anything on the machine, I spent 7k on it mostly for visual purposes...! I'm beginning to wonder, is this apple forum here for users to discuss how they are unable use the machines they purchased?

There is no doubt in my mind that this whole freeze and reboot problem is not related to any other software or hardware. It is purely a problem with Yosemite. Furthermore, I don't remember having this problem until after the last update . . . 10.10.1. Prior to this I never had a reboot or freeze.

It also makes me very angry when they come out with an upgrade and don't tell us what it "REALLY" fixed. Always some bogus thing like Raw cameras or something silly. It's time they gave us a complete detail of everything they touched, so we can quit spending hours and hours troubleshooting red herrings.

I can confirm I have the same issue here. Although only about once to twice a week. Is it just me are a lot of the people with this issue booted from an SSD (like me)? After the last crash to login Safari failed to restore its session (and the option to do so in the History menu was greyed out). Now I'm trying to remember all the windows/tabs I had open. 😟

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) 2.3Ghz i5, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD and 500GB HDD (In Optical Slot), Mac OS X 10.10.1

Edit: Can't seem to locate anything in the Console that matches up with the log out event.

so it's a long term bug. This only makes me think that, or Apple doesn't know how to fix this, that it's something related to the very core of the OS X, and it's a shame to them or it is just something we have installed and running in the background

In any way, this it's even worst than the old death-blue screen in windows.

Full disclosure, I do Mac support for a living. I've not witnessed this issue on my machine or any of my clients machines prior to Yosemite.

Looks like I'm going to have to blow it away and start fresh and see if this is something I can fix. Part of me wonders if this ties in with kext signing and the fact Trim Enabler doesn't work anymore? For a fuller explanation for this, Google "Trim Enabler Yosemite".

If what I do works I'll be sure to post on here.

PS. To the person demanding a refund...since Yosemite was free, Apple will gladly hand back your $0. :)

Yes, I complete agree with you. I have NEVER had an OS X crash, lock, or reboot until this last version of Yosemite. I really think it didn't happen until the 10.10.1 update. a couple of friends who haven't upgraded to this last version haven't had the same problems. However, it does bother me that there aren't more users having this problem? Perhaps reboots are more common for them. I know a lot of PC switchers aren't Apple minded, and they tend to install a lot of third party software without care as to where it comes from (Flash for example). They still have those careless Windoze habits, and are bringing over a bunch of bad stuff to their Macs. Those users expect their OS to have problems once in a while :-) Contrariwise, hard core Apple users expect 100% availability all the time. The only time I have ever had any problem with any OS X version lock up or reboot, was when I caused it myself, and knew that I did.

Do you guys have multiple user accounts?

Sometimes switching between accounts seems to trigger this behavior as well.

Has anyone tried a clean install as a fix?

This is really cutting into my productivity. I've had to switch over to my work PC to get things done. yuck! I just can't afford to be spontaneously logged out and lose my work. In all my years on Macs this is the worst issue I've ever run into. I really hope this is on Apple's radar, and they're working to remedy it.

I noticed this too! Switching between accounts hugely increase the chance of crash to login in screen. U instantly go to log in screen.

I wish it shut down computer normally this way.

P.s. also i noticed a bug with Pages if u crashed to log in screen and want to open documents in iCloud it say it cannot open them. U need to restart computer to fix the issue.

Yes, as a matter of fact I thought user switching might also be the culprit, but thinking back it worked just fine on Yosemite earlier? I always have two users on all of my Macs because I share them with my wife, when she isn't using her iPad (which is 90% of the time).

I went backwards to check dates to see what I installed or added that might also be a trigger. How about GEditCom? I installed that about the time I started experiencing the reboots? I wiped it out this morning to see if there is any impact. I haven't had a reboot since then, but not getting convinced yet.
