Yosemite made my macbook pro slow

I have clean installed Yosemite. Ever since doing so my computer is extremely slow. It takes 10 minutes or longer to open iTunes and iPhoto and my external HD takes just as long to show any files. This is really annoying, I cant get anything done on here. I feel like im in a timewarp back to AOL dial up days. HELLLPPPP!!!!!

Hi,

I don't know if this will help--or even if what I've done will have a lasting effect for my late 2009-ish MacBook Pro, but so far today it has not had long moments of what I've always called "The Thinking Rainbow." For the past three days, I'd get the spinning rainbow for ten minutes at a time, and couldn't do so much as a Force-Quit, since Finder itself had frozen/stalled.

I followed a lot of advice that I'd found here and on other help threads, including turning Notification Center completely off and reinstalling Yosemite from before the Log-In screen. The only thing that gave me hope that I wasn't doomed was that while the graphics were strange in Safe Boot Mode, functionality was more like what I was used to. From there, I uninstalled a bunch of third-party software, although it was all up to date; that seemed to help until the next day, when things were slower than before. I couldn't so much as open a file folder without having to wait five minutes.

I felt sure that I needed to get all my files out of there in expectation of taking the laptop in for a complete do-over.

While I was transferring files--a painfully tedious process that took almost twelve hours--to my ancient, large-capacity iPod, I experienced a horrific number of Thinking Rainbow hangs...all concerning files that "could not be read or written." They were all, if memory serves, mostly PDFs and perhaps an old Word DOC. Some small files, some larger. None of them were ones that I had created recently, and most were older downloads. When I then tried to open one, the attempt crashed Preview. When I tried to open the DOC in Text Edit, nothing good happened there, either.

So, I deleted them. Any time my file transfer would hang, I'd wait until the system sorted itself out and gave me the "File X could not...etc," I'd delete "File X."

At this point, I am almost positive that every single file that I've ever put or created my computer has been put through this "transfer test." And, since the last apparently-corrupted file was trashed, my computer is its usual self. (*knock on wood*) I have restarted it several times, all okay. I am currently listening to Internet Radio AND typing in Safari while Scrivener is open in the background. This would have been unthinkable yesterday.

Let's hope it holds. And I hope this might be helpful to you all.

started using my old mac mini with 10.5 Leopard OS with 8gb of ram it blazed thru Snow leopard Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks

after installing of Yosemite it has finally slowed down

I have another mini (2011) with 16gb of ram and it is blazing fast but I bet the SSD in it helps with the speed as well with the speed

Yosemite is starving for more ram so simply downgrade your os or get more ram

I've got a similar problem, my memory may be the reason as it is only 4GB. I've had Yosemite for a while now and my macbooks performance has been getting slower and slower. I've downloaded etrecheck and got the following;

EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)
