When I add a custom label to a mobile phone the option for texting disappears from the contact. I guess what it is doing is changing the phone from a mobile to something else. Is there a way to have a custom label, that will show as a mobile for texting.

I don't have the message bubble showing up in contacts unless the number is labeled "mobile" or "iPhone". In the screen shot below, both of those numbers are mobile numbers. As it turns out, the one in this contact labeled "mobile" is an iPhone. The other is not.

Good call.
If I change a contact # to Mobile or iPhone, it adds the bubble (and vice-versa).
Guess I needed to look at it a little deeper.
However, if I select click Send Message at bottom, I can select any of the numbers listed for that contact.
I only know because every now and then, I try to start a message from Contacts and can't. I, of course, totally forgot about the Send Message option at the bottom of the contact. Doh.
Not that it's a huge deal, but having to leave txt, to go to contacts, search and then click send message, adds quite a few steps. When you should just be able to type the name and have it populate. But it may be just how it is.

It shouldn't be that way but I have no idea why it's not working correctly on your phone. Sorry.
Yes the text symbol displays only if label is mobile or iphone. For any other it doesnt display. It should'nt be this way. Is this the issue for everyone?

Yes, that is the way it works. Whether or not you agree with Apple's design choice it does seem to be the way they intended it.

So when you start typing in the To: box, it doesn't display all contacts with the info you are typing?
I type a B and all contacts with a B anywhere in the contacts show up.
Then type O and it starts to narrow down to all contacts with BO anywhere in the contact.
I do this until I see what I want then tap that number to use it.
