Happened to me as well, and I came on hear and found the same fix you used. This is clearly a scam and the whole point is to try to take people's money, but frankly, you would have to be incredibly naive to give these people who apparently answer the number listed on the pop-up any of your info, especially your CC #.

Did you try those same steps, just in a way that's intended for a computer? For example, in place of putting the phone on airplane mode, disable your internet temporarily. Then for the next step, hopefully it should be the same...as in you would want to go into the Safari settings and Clear History and Webstie Data, or whatever option it offers along those lines. Then reopen safari and turn your internet back on. I use chrome on my laptop so I'm not positive how the data clear option is worded, but it seems like doing these same steps but just for a computer and not for an iphone would be a good place to start. This is how it's explained for an iphone for your reference:

Place the phone in Airplane mode.

Go to Settings >

Safari>

And Clear History and website Data

Reopen safari and all will be gone. Turn off Airplane mode.

Hope you get it figured out!

Reboot your device

Disable wifi

Then launch safari

Hopefully then the page does not load and you can close the offending tab.

Alternatively repeat the above steps and quickly tap on one of the other tabs as safari is loading. If you're quick enough that tab has focus but you still get the pop-up. But the after the next reboot cycle you won't get the pop up since focus is on another tab and you should be able to close the offending tab.

Looks like someone found a nice way to scam. I actually called that number and a lady with an asian accent answered. She explained that the number showed up on my device because of an issue with the operating system and that she can fix it for USD 60 !!

I am not sure what caused that popup to show up on Safari but how do I make sure that this will not happen again? Just stop using Safari on IOS?

I just had the same "scam" this evening. I got the Safari message: "http://supportcallnow.com 'warning!! iOS Crash Report' " Due to a third party application in your phone, iOS crashed. Contact Support for an immediate fix - 1-800-480-4170. I too called the phone # to see what was going on. It went straight on hold when I called (didn't ring) and then when someone came on the line, it was a woman who I could barely hear due to the noise in the background. She stated that my ios crashed and was no longer something on my iPhone5S and that a 3rd party was at that time taking all my info. off my phone (nice "scare tactic" eh?). She then said for $80 though she could reinstall ios and just needed my credit card # (yeah, ooooookkkay). So I said that was ridiculous as I had been using apps and my phone the whole time I was talking to her on speaker and said I would call Apple Support directly. She told me they would say the same thing about having to pay to have ios reinstalled on my phone. I said I highly doubt it and told her I wouldn't pay the money and that she was essentially full of crap. She then said (prob after realizing I wasn't buying any of it) "OK ma'am" and hung up on me.

Adamfrombessemer's advice works if you're surfing sites and get a "ios Crash Report" message in Safari on your iPhone like I did!

1. Place the phone in Airplane mode.

2. Go to Settings > Safari > And Clear History and website Data

3. Reopen safari and all will be gone. Turn off Airplane mode.

MY daughter got the same message on iPad and was able to clear it by going into settings and clear history. She also turned off wifi and rebooted. Thanks foe help. Do you think any information on ipad is in jeopardy

There is no virus. It's called a pop-up ad. Many websites have popups. You can disable popups in the Settings > Safari on the device.

Not a "pop up ad" but a "pop up scam". Whatever it is freezes the page you're on in Safari with a "pop up window" saying iOS has crashed and to call some #. When you call the #, they ask for your credit card # to pay the $80 so they can "reinstall" iOS to your phone/iPad, etc. And they tell you Apple will charge the same thing. Complete BS. All you do is what "adamfrombessemer" suggests in this thread to get rid of the annoying pop up.

It's still a pop-up ad. The fact that it is essentially is 'locking' up your iPhone simply means that the website it's linked to is constantly sending data requests.

Disable pop-up ads, and this won't happen.

Adam's steps are a temporary fix after it happens.

Blocking pop-ups prevents it from happening in the first place.

My pop-ups are blocked, always have been, and my phone was still affected by this. It's a little more vicious than your avg pop-up.

Yea my first pop up ever to. I was freaking out. i even went to the website on my computer. All I saw it as was a way to get people to pay them money. there is no way the could have fixed it on my end anyway since i was on my phone. nothing but a bunch of conartists.
