For me, Touch ID doesn't work when plugged in...it does work when not plugged in. (this is a new iPhone out of the box yesterday). Im plugged in to a standard lightning cable and into USB on my Mac.

>>>>> [Try removing the case from the phone, and hold the iPhone in your hand, ...and make sure you are using a new USB lightning cable plugged in to an apple device or the original apple converter (square block plug)]

For me, unplugged: touch ID works every time; plugging it in, touch ID works intermittently maybe 1 of 20 trys. Its like it doesn't see the presence of a finger.

I reset all my finger prints -no improvement.

I called Apple care. During my call with Apple-care, one of the first 5 questions they asked me was "does this problem occur when plugged-in or not" --(obviously they know of some issue). ...... they made me hard-reset and also Erase all data and reload. After reload of my data, still have the problem... in fact it could not perform the Touch ID Setup activity while plugged in.

I tried multiple lightning cables. Reset again as a "new phone"... the touch ID was still intermittently not working during the Touch ID Setup.

I finally removed my case (silicone apple case) ... It turns out that possibly there is an electrical grounding problem with iPhone 6. When my hand is touching the back metal case of the phone, the touch ID works even when plugged in. If I am not touching the metal case on the back, touch ID has problems when plugged in.

Ditto for me. I've been successfully using the touch ID feature since I first received my iPhone 6 back in September. However, I've also noticed that within the past few weeks it has not been recognizing my fingerprints. You provided some great directions on how to use it, But I didn't all the sudden change the way I was putting my finger on the home button, nor have I been using it with wet fingers or lotions. I've deleted my previously working fingerprints, and have created new ones numerous times. Unfortunately, still no luck. I've seen numerous complaints online from others with the same issue. It seems to me that there is a potential glitch here in the operating system; not how the user is using it. I would just like to know if any glitch has yet been identified, or it can be looked into based on the number of users with the same issue. Thanks!

I have the same problem. I have a brand new iPhone 6 Plus. I upgraded from an iPhone 5 specifically to get TouchID and a larger size. Well, it IS bigger, but TouchID does not work. I can scan any finger and it will work for an hour or two. Gradually the recognition gets worse until by the next day the print is no longer recognized.

Please do not reply with Apple's canned suggestions that blame the user. The fact that I can enter a new fingerprint and it will work for awhile indicates that the lens is not dirty, my hands are not deformed, etc.

I've already gotten a replacement, but since my symptoms are the same as the ones experienced by the people bitten by the 8.0.2 bug it seems like there is still some kind of edge-case problem with 8.1.2. There are enough of us reporting in various places, that the problem should be escalated to engineering and some kind of a stopgap should be offered. How about a downgrade to before 8.0.2 for people who just want TouchID, one of the primary advertised features, on their very expensive phone to work?

i have a same issue with Jukesy. 2 days ago when i woke up, my fingerprints were deleted and i cannot add one. the add fingerprint option is grayed out. i tried restoring to factory settings but even before putting back the back up data, it still won't let me add a fingerprint. i updated to ios 8.1.3 over the weekend.. double tap is also not working. i hate to consider hardware problem because the home button is still working fine and why would my fingerprint be deleted if it is not software related. any other tricks that you may have encountered to revive your touch id?

I bought my first iPhone 6 on 2/20/15 and found that the Touch ID worked for only a few hours. One Apple Sr. Advisor said it was a software problem; a second Sr. Advisor said it was a hardware problem and sent me to an Apple store for a replacement. That worked quite well for several hours and then stopped functioning completely. After endless hours on the Apple Care line, several trips to the Genius Bar, reinstalling my data and operating system and deleting and resetting my fingerprint I was nowhere. One of the three Sr. Advisors with whom I spoke said he would have the engineers call me but that has yet to happen. In fact Apple has closed the case. What appears to have finally worked - for me - was using my forefinger instead of my thumbs. For the past three days the phone has performed as advertised. Stayed tuned. I can't wait to tell the engineers or Tim Cook.

My wife and I have iPhone 6 plus and both have this problem. A fingerprint will work and first and then sporadically. If you go into the touch id settings it is easy to test because background for the finger turns gray. A finger may not work at all one day and then work another day. Apple rep on telephone told me your finger prints are affected (change) with moisture, etc. I find this somewhat hard to believe since fingerprints are used all the time to identify people and even evidence of a crime. How could this be if the finger prints are to flakey? Very frustrating. Try to use apple pay and you never know if it will work or not. Surprised Apple hasn't been more responsive to this common problem since they want "everybody" to use apple pay.

I am having a similar issue but worse, had my iPhone6 since November and was all working amazingly but then this weekend the touch ID just stopped working.

I woke up one morning and it's completely gone, doesn't recognise for unlock, can't add a new finger and even a double touch doesn't move the screen down anymore.

Seems like it must be hardware but any advice on SW fix welcome! I did a hard reset, cleaned up the physical button...etc but nothing i've tried so far makes a difference.

Who knew having to put pin/passwords in manually would become so annoying after getting used to touch id! 😁

HI, Jukesy. The exact same thing happened to me--it wont recognize any of my fingerprints. I tried setting up new fingerprints and it wouldnt recognize any. The double tap doesnt work for me as well. I called Apple's hotline and they said I should have the software restored and updated, which i did. Still, it doesnt work.

I have a hunch that mine is a hardware issue as well even if mine is just less than a month old from now. If I may ask, have you found a resolution to your touch id issue? If so, what did you do? Thank you!

I have my iPhone 6 (64Gb) with the latest soft 8.1.3 and suddenly Touch ID feature stopped working.
It's not the way "iphone doesn't recognize my fingers" but just doesn't recognize I am putting my finger on the button (it's not sparkling meaning he didn't recognize, but just no reaction while I touching the button).

Also if I try to add new fingertip - it doesn't work. The window is opened saying 'touch the button' but no fingertip picture with red lines. just white screen.
I tried to restart my iPhone few times - it didn't help.

Just to avoid canned reply message about 'oily fingers' etc - the Touch ID feature worked well for me (i used it, i was able to add more fingers and all of them worked for unlocking) for about one month since I bough my iPhone.

Could you please advise?

So my excitement was short lived as 2-3 days after the miracle it stopped working again.

Strangely it seemed to co-incide with using some hand sanitiser but i think that is a co-incdence and your hands would have to be pretty dirty or covered in a special kind of something not to work.

I deleted the prints that i'd added a few days before and now i can't re-add and the double touch for screen scroll down is again not working.

After two weeks or more and many restarts and hand washes it's still broken.

I'm also not in my home country which is where i purchased it so can't go to an apple store (There isn't one here anyway) for swap out.

Any new ideas folks?
