For me, Touch ID doesn't work when plugged in...it does work when not plugged in. (this is a new iPhone out of the box yesterday). Im plugged in to a standard lightning cable and into USB on my Mac.

>>>>> [Try removing the case from the phone, and hold the iPhone in your hand, ...and make sure you are using a new USB lightning cable plugged in to an apple device or the original apple converter (square block plug)]

For me, unplugged: touch ID works every time; plugging it in, touch ID works intermittently maybe 1 of 20 trys. Its like it doesn't see the presence of a finger.

I reset all my finger prints -no improvement.

I called Apple care. During my call with Apple-care, one of the first 5 questions they asked me was "does this problem occur when plugged-in or not" --(obviously they know of some issue). ...... they made me hard-reset and also Erase all data and reload. After reload of my data, still have the problem... in fact it could not perform the Touch ID Setup activity while plugged in.

I tried multiple lightning cables. Reset again as a "new phone"... the touch ID was still intermittently not working during the Touch ID Setup.

I finally removed my case (silicone apple case) ... It turns out that possibly there is an electrical grounding problem with iPhone 6. When my hand is touching the back metal case of the phone, the touch ID works even when plugged in. If I am not touching the metal case on the back, touch ID has problems when plugged in.

I have this issue longing for few weeks now. And it's not about the physical signature of my fingers (sanitiser, sweating, humidity etc)

The sensor just stop working in one moment... for 2 hours, for 2 days... then starts working again... without any logical and similar reason.

I am kinda confused. Because I was going to the apple repair shop, but in that morning it started to work again! And if I come to the repair shop with working sensor - it's just stupid and I know what they'll say to me...

I have the problem, too.

Sometimes it works, and then it doesn't work at all. Started around 2 weeks ago.

Either the scanner dies quickly - at it can't read the fingerprint any more - or Apple botched something up with the last IOS upgrade.

On some occasions I cannot log in at all, and I have to use the PIN.

PS: when it fails to recognize my finger, I get "try again" shaking.

It appears that the fingerprint id is not yet ready for prime time. I bought the iPhone 6 eight days ago and after two trips to the Genius Bar and four calls to the Apple Care line the phone would only recognize my fingerprint for about an hour; and then nothing. Apple replaced the phone and I have the same problem. After all of this I am going to report what I have written to Apple. Right now the fingerprint function is useless.

I have had my IPhone 6 for a week now. Per Apple's message, I upgraded to 8.1.3 the first time I turned it on. My Touch ID has never worked. Similar complaints to everyone above. I have redone my thumb fingerprint at least 6 times. It works for about 3 hours, then - no recognition. I have tried other fingers and have seen no improvement. Very disappointing. I will try gretchenfromma's solution in a few hours to see if that works.

I hope Apple comes up with a real, true fix and not just these lame bullet points. I was excited to upgrade from iPhone 5 to 6 Plus in December. Touch ID and Apple Pay were important features to me. I had no difficulty enrolling my fingers. I successfully used Touch ID MAYBE 6 times. After Christmas, I was at the Apple Store for a couple of hours buying and setting up a Macbook. While I was doing that, my Genius Bar rep helped address my Touch ID issue. We deleted and re-enrolled my fingers. He had me basically massaging the home button so that it could get to know my fingerprints better. Of course, it worked great while in the store, but hasn't worked since. My phone is current with all the IOS updates. After reading all of these posts, I deleted my fingerprints and enrolled them again. It worked twice, and not since. I'm disappointed and disgusted.

I have this problem since January, and it's getting worse.

Touch ID has become so bad, that it's a true hindrance to use my phone.

I have had stretches of twenty, thirty attempts where it didn't work in a row. Then, suddenly, it works again for a couple of hours.

Also, I feel that I have to change my thumb position. It is a different position form where I could use it originally.

Apple is incredibly depending on the iPhone business. I can't believe they are sleeping behind the wheel on this.

I also have this issue.

Touch ID worked perfectly when I purchased the phone. After each update, my fingerprint has issues being recognized. Sometimes it works after 5 tries, sometimes it flat out quits and tells me to use the pass code. After re-imaging my prints again, it'll work, but on the next iOS update, broken again.

Just about as frustrating as Siri telling me "she ***** and to ask her later".

After two months with the iPhone 6 and the struggles that I outlined above I am ready to rate this product as excellent with the exception of the Touch ID which is, at best, a work in progress. Most of the time it does work but it will become unresponsive for reasons that are a mystery to me. My experience parallels that of the other users here and that is frustrating and disappointing. But what troubles me most is my conversations with several Apple Sr. Advisors who apparently don't see the need to escalate this to higher levels in the organization. If erratic performance like this does not merit bringing management into the discussion, then what does? We continuously get updates for problems - bugs - that are often invisible to most users. But this - a faulty Touch ID that is heavily marketed by Apple - doesn't merit an update and a fix? I don't get it. And apparently Apple doesn't monitor these community reports and replies and ignores feedback reports that are sent directly to the company. With Apple's history and wealth this is inexcusable. Where are you now Steve Jobs when we need you?!

As I said in my reply of April 17th, Apple is not paying attention to this web site and the numerous complaints about the Touch ID malfunction. Worse, the Apple technicians - even at the senior level - are apparently not escalating this to higher levels within the company. Until Tim Cook or one of his friends encounters this problem it isn't getting fixed any time soon I fear.

Apple isn't checking these message boards and their technicians aren't escalating this problem to higher levels within the company who can initiate updates. Suggest that you go to their Product Feedback site and relate your experience. However, I have done that twice with no results to show.

I've heard rumors of an iCar. God help us if the Touch ID people are working on that.

I have mine under control now. Occasionally I will reset my fingerprints and that helps. I also notice that temperature can effect it; the beast works better in a warmer environment. Also, after I wash my hands it is non responsive but when I get up in the morning it works perfectly. I still think that Apple needs to get some more bugs out of it.
