New Mac Pro - A graphics problem has been detected

System:

  • New Mac Pro (late 2013)
  • AMD Firepro D300, 2GB
  • 3.7G Quad Core Xeon E5
  • 12GB Ram
  • 250G SSD Internal
  • dual display, 24" samsung BX2440 and older 19" dell
  • logitech mx518 mouse
  • Apple wired keyboard with numeric pad
  • external USB 2T drive used for time machine
  • OSX Yosemite: 10.10

Problem:

Every few hours I get one or sometimes multiple errors where the OS pops a small dialog box User uploaded file

Sometimes I am in a web browser, sometimes playing a game, Garage band, sometimes in email, it doesn't seem to matter what is happening. The problem comes randomly and once it does, it freezes the UI solid until it resets the graphics card (or something like that). I was playing Legend of Grimrock and the thing happened, and the game created an error report stating "Graphics hardware encountered an error and was reset: 0x0000000e"

What I have tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM reset
  • diskutil check disk (ok)
  • diskutil fix permissions (ok)
  • apple diagnostics, no problem found.
  • Apple support chat session (no resolution)

Question:

  • Is this a hardware problem where I should just go get my money back and/or get a new computer?
  • If not a hardware problem, is there some well understood fix for this?

Frustrated and ready to punt,

Paul

I bought a new Macbook pro (mid 2014) two weeks ago and almost immediately after start up the previously mentioned 'a graphics problem has been detected' message popped up. after searching the net for a solution i suspected it was a Yosemite issue as was mentioned by many on several forums. I tried all the suggestions that were offered but none worked. Finally i decided to contact Apple and had a long chat yesterday where it was suggested to do a clean reinstall, as it might be an issue with some of the software I'd installed. But lo and behold, after several hours of downloading a new OS and restarting the first message that popped up was 'A graphics problem has been detected'. So I called with Apple again and they decided that there's no other option than it being a hardware problem. So....they're sending me a new Macbook pro. Fingers crossed that this is an isolated issue of a bad computer and not a problem with a whole batch of them.

Well, I've been running into this problem since I installed Yosemite when it was officially released to the public. A full OS re-install would not only be a huge time-sink, but it has been demonstrated to "not work". So, I will be avoiding that option. I have a MacBookPro Retina (mid-2012). To say the least, this has been extremely frustrating, the bug rearing it's ugly head when I'm in the middle of a WebEx meeting or working on something important. I think Apple had better take a more proactive approach on this; at least let us know that they are working on a solution. 😠 Incidentally, are any of you, who are experiencing this issue, using the application "BetterSnap Tool"? I'm just wondering whether it has something to do with it.

I feel your pain. I'm a Web developer by trade so I'm working all day on my Mac Pro and when it crashes sometimes I have to hit the power button and I lose time and money. I have an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow morning to see if they can repair it or if they have to give me a new one. I'll report back afterward.

By the way I am not using BetterSnap Tool. This issue happens when using so many different applications, I can almost guarantee this isn't software related.

I ended up at the Genius bar to have a talk with the business guy there. He recommended a replacement. I did this, and so far I have seen no trouble since.

I have heard that the dual GPUs in macbook pros can sometimes have the same issue, where one of the cards is faulty and causes occasional popup notices like I show up top. Before the new mac pro I bought (shown in the OP), I never saw an issue like this with my MacBooks or my Mac Minis (of which I have several at work and home combined).

So ultimately, this may indeed be some strange driver problem, but the new machine shows no sign of it yet. So I am leaning towards "bad card".

Yeah, we're definitely in the same boat in terms of disruptions to our business. I hope getting a new Mac fixes the issue for you. Mine is still under warranty, so if the hardware swap proves to be a solution, I'll request the same. By the way, thank you for letting me know that you're not using BetterSnap Tool. I'm thinking that it might still be software related, caused by the way Yosemite handles communications with the graphics driver. Perhaps, they are performing an illegal operation not supported by the driver or they are using an obscure function within the driver that was not used and thoroughly tested in the past.

One more survey question 😉: Does everyone experiencing this issue have an nVidia graphics card installed?

OK I went back to my wireless logitech keyboard and mouse since that doesn't seem to be related.

I have an AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB x 2 Mac Pro.

I woke up this morning with another gpu restart error message on the screen.

So, I did a re-install from the recovery partition. It only took 30 minutes or so and didn't change any of my preferences only system prefs like the gatekeeper setting.

So far I have not had another gpu restart but....time will tell. I was only having them every few days anyway so I will report back in a week or sooner if I get an error.

Happy Weekend!

Just a quick note to let you guys what happened yesterday. After going to the genius bar the employee went ahead and ordered some parts so he could do more diagnostics. He did say this issue is rare but he has seen it before. I asked him if Apple would replace the entire thing and he said only if the engineers wanted it to see what the problem was. So basically I have to go back next week when they get the parts in.

OK I had two more gpu restarts yesterday within seconds of each other.

I was using screen sharing at the time and my mouse froze for a second and then the dialog box came up telling of the crash.

I played a graphic intensive game the other day for an hour without issue.

Strange behavior but it looks like I might call Applecare or make an appointment for the genius bar.

Continuing to poke away at this though.

Wow! My computer just locked up and barfed.

It left no less than 8 gpurestarts on the console log.

I scheduled a call with Apple for later. I will be asking for a replacement unit.

Appears to be no denying this is a hardware problem.

I am rebooted in safe mode right now and you should see how ugly the graphics are now. Must be running without any graphics card in safe mode.

Totally unacceptable either way.

I will report back later.
