New Mac Pro - A graphics problem has been detected

System:

  • New Mac Pro (late 2013)
  • AMD Firepro D300, 2GB
  • 3.7G Quad Core Xeon E5
  • 12GB Ram
  • 250G SSD Internal
  • dual display, 24" samsung BX2440 and older 19" dell
  • logitech mx518 mouse
  • Apple wired keyboard with numeric pad
  • external USB 2T drive used for time machine
  • OSX Yosemite: 10.10


Problem:

Every few hours I get one or sometimes multiple errors where the OS pops a small dialog box User uploaded file


Sometimes I am in a web browser, sometimes playing a game, Garage band, sometimes in email, it doesn't seem to matter what is happening. The problem comes randomly and once it does, it freezes the UI solid until it resets the graphics card (or something like that). I was playing Legend of Grimrock and the thing happened, and the game created an error report stating "Graphics hardware encountered an error and was reset: 0x0000000e"


What I have tried:

  • SMC Reset
  • PRAM reset
  • diskutil check disk (ok)
  • diskutil fix permissions (ok)
  • apple diagnostics, no problem found.
  • Apple support chat session (no resolution)


Question:


  • Is this a hardware problem where I should just go get my money back and/or get a new computer?
  • If not a hardware problem, is there some well understood fix for this?

Ok the next episode of the continuing saga:


The Geniuses completely reset my computer (including the firmware) this weekend at the Apple store.


When I got it back yesterday I used the Migration Assistant instead of restoring from a Time Machine Backup. That is what I did when I first got it.


I was switching from an old Mac Pro and I probably have a lot of stuff in preferences and applications from 5-6 years ago.


So far I have not had any more issues but that does not mean it is fixed.


I am trying to run without 3rd party software but it really hampers my work flow.

Another problem after almost a week without.


I noticed this time on the console it cites the screen saver engine as the problem.

Spent a few hours now cleaning my home folder out of old stuff.


I don't know if this is related but I am having problems with Safari 8 not wanting to load any of the Apple Knowledge Base pages like this one:

Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues - Apple Support


It works fine off and on then occasionally won't load a page.


So I took that pages advice and deleted all third part web plugins except:

doubleTwistWebPlugin

and a scripting addition:

EasySIMBL


If problems continue then I will delete these also.

For now my last gpurestart was 2 days ago:

I was online with Safari attempting to watch a video using the Flash plugin.


At this point I would recommend anyone having this problem to start with a fresh install of Yosemite if you can and use the Migration Assistant instead of restoring from a Time Machine Backup.

Then begin to systematically remove 3rd party software like, internet plugins, kernal extensions etc.


I have stuff in my home folder from 2005 so if you are like me and have migrated from older systems there could be a lot of ghost software in your home folder that needs to be cleaned out.


Leaning down your home folder is probably not a bad idea anyway.


I will continue troubleshooting this to see if I can get a clean system without these errors.

I am experiencing this issue as well AND I have the same configuration as your Mac Pro. This is my second Mac Pro '13 that is incurring the same issue. I re-installed OSX Yosemite to see if this would fix the issue on my 2nd Mac Pro (1st one was sent back). Went for a month without issue but today I experienced the Graphics Problem alert. I allowed the report to be sent in. I then went to the Crash Log and Diagnostic Log in the ~/Library but was unable to find the report. Anyone have an idea where to find it?

Wow!


Now it just got really weird.


I have been having a problem with Safari not loading pages. Strangely they are Apple Support pages like this one:

Mail (Mavericks): Make a sender a VIP

Google Chrome and Firefox will load them just fine.

So, I restart my computer this morning after Safari would not load the aforementioned page.

It still will not load the page. So I come here to the discussions. When I open the site it has me logged in as someone else and will not let me log out.

Here is the proof:

I hit logout several times and it doesn't log me out. So I click on activity and then it freezes and I get a gpurestart.

Application: com.apple.WebKit


This is twice it has done this while Safari was running (the other reset involved trying to view a Flash video) and many times that I have had the problem with Safari not loading an Apple support page. The only way to fix that problem was to clear the "History and Website Data" for the last hour and then it loaded the page.

So, I am thoroughly frustrated with Safari and I am going to try running Chrome to see if the problems persist.

I am somewhat disappointed with Apple lately as it seems they rushed Yosemite and Safari 8 to market to let us be their Beta testers.

Same thing here. If I play the default visualizer in iTunes it stutters. Others crash the graphics. Had a DVD also crash. Also using TB to DVI on a dual monitor system. 2013 4 core MP, Yosemite, 32GB RAM. The vendor (Melrose Mac) wants the machine back (it's 4 days old) and want to copy the HD to a new machine but I think I'm going the Applecare route as I wonder if the vendor's inventory might be somewhat more limited and they would be less willing to ship to my studio. So frustrating.

I was having problems with frequent GPU Resets that seemed to coincide with the move to Yosemite back in November. I initially thought it was due to the monitors I was using but switched to a Thunderbolt display and kept having problems. I finally took the computer in to the Genius Bar and they replaced the graphics cards and the motherboard. Since then, I haven't had a single incident in the last month. If this is happening more than once a week, I'd recommend taking it in to the Genius Bar. Make sure you make a copy of the Console output with all the GPU resets because the first order of business will be to reinstall your OS and you'll lose the proof. Whatever causes these GPU Resets is intermittent and might not show up when they run the stress tests. First time I took it in, they couldn't reproduce the problem and luckily, the second time, it happened as soon as they plugged it in.

This was happening on my laptop with seemingly increasing regularity, after upgrading to Yosemite - as much as several times a day. Many posters suggest a hardware problem, and Apple seem to be willing to replace the hardware. But I found a post on another forum that suggested this - on MacBook's with dedicated graphics processors, there is a new feature to switch graphics processing between the dedicated GPU and the 'on-CPU' graphics processor, to save battery power. This 'switching' is leading to the lockups/issues. This is being worked on by Apple, but in the meantime, the workaround is:

  1. Launch ‘system preferences’
  2. In system preferences, second row, choose
    ‘energy saver’
  3. On the ‘Energy Saver’ screen, there is a check
    box at the VERY TOP of the window – ABOVE where it says ‘battery’ and ‘Power
    Adapter’. It says ‘Automatic Graphics Switching’. ‘Your computer will
    automatically switch between graphics modes for better battery life’.
  4. DE-SELECT this option. Once de-selected,
    it will say ‘…your computer will always use high-performance graphics …’.


Once I did this, the lockups stopped and I haven't seen anything for almost 12 hours. I'll continue to monitor the situation.
