HERE'S THE FIX =)

Settings
Messages

Under ‘Audio’ flip the switch for “Raise to Listen” to OFF.

Go back to your texts and notice its GONE! 🙂

I cant believe apple couldn't tell you guys that.
I wonder if they know themselves.
I figured it out playing with settings.
Seems like they want us to send unwanted and embarrassing accidental self recordings of ourselves.

If you don't have this option then try updating your iOS to latest. good luck.

Which is really only proof that 561 have pushed the button. Given the number of people who mark their own posts saying "Thank you" as the solved answer for a question, I wouldn't place too much stock in that number. It could be either higher or lower. Even assuming it's 5000, ten times that, it's still a minuscule percentage of the number of iPhone users out there.

And, I remain confused as to why you should care what other people choose to use.

Thank you. I just wanted to check I was not being totally dim, such a shame there is no way to disable it, I struggle with my dexterity and have somehow managed to push, hold, record and send things to two different people today, totally by accident but with unpleasant results!

Hopefully Apple will move/change this function so that it can be disabled. For sure I am not the only one who has made this mistake!

Thank you for your quick reply.

are you talking about the phone showing the black screen and spinning wheel and kicking you back to your password screen? That happened to me today for the first time ever, and happened every 1-2 minutes. I finally found a post by someone suggesting that they go to Settings > Notifications and turn them off for EVERY app, then update to iOS 11.2. I haven’t updated yet but I did shut off all my notifications and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Over 500 people have this concern as well. If just one of them disables iMessage, then I've made a difference!

Everyone needs to make their own choice about iMessage. They should not make their choice based on your needs. That would be stupid. As your phone can receive both SMS and iMessage, it also doesn't matter what other people chose; you can still communicate with them. So I'm not really clear what "difference" you think you would have made.

I'm not sure where you get the "over 500 people" number. If it's by counting the number of posts in this thread, it's incorrect. People have posted multiple times and some people have posted who do not have this problem.

Best of luck.

Apple needs to get their act together, if you implement something as a new feature you should have options for disabling them. Whats good for one person may not be good for another. Sure it may be good for a disabled person who cant type too well but it will be bad for those who dont need it or use it especially those who accidentally send unneeded or embarrassing recordings.

The microphone that you are referring to is to the right of the message area, and that is not for dictating, that is a voice message feature of iOS 8. You can only use that for iMessage. I am not aware of a setting to disable this. You will only record a message if you tap on the mic, and you will see the recording. Just tap on the ✖ to close and delete the audio message. You actually have to hold the icon to start the recording, and once you have typed in the message box, the mic is gone.
