How do I disable the microphone recording thing on imessage? Siri is not activated but still the icon for the microphone is there and twice I have sent recordings by mistake - NOT good!

That's incorrect. I just tried that setting and the option to record is still there, sorry.
This is far TOO easy to accidentally activate. My wife and I have accidentally sent audio messages but thankfully nothing too embarrassing yet.
Apple, please provide a way to disable this

Over 500 people have this concern as well. If just one of them disables iMessage, then I've made a difference! Thanks for your "help" though. I hope you didn't spend too much time on it.
It is easy to accidentally send. It’s an Apple flaw for sure. I’ve done it multiple times w no intention or effort.
Thank you. I just wanted to check I was not being totally dim, such a shame there is no way to disable it, I struggle with my dexterity and have somehow managed to push, hold, record and send things to two different people today, totally by accident but with unpleasant results!
Hopefully Apple will move/change this function so that it can be disabled. For sure I am not the only one who has made this mistake!

Not only has it caused me embarrassment, but someones wife heard someones goomah (side-piece) in a moment of passion.
Furthermore, i do not care to receive such messages.
As a recipient i would like to be able to disable this at the user level, as well as all contacts.
When I travel internationally I do not need extra data charges...
Like Amish said, it is still there. I'm on iOS 8.2 on my iPhone 5s, turning that switch off has nothing to do with enabling or disabling that feature. Provide feedback to Apple as indicated in earlier posts if you would like to see the feature removed.
And as I stated earlier, if you would like to see a change, you need to let Apple know, not the users. Use the feedback link from earlier posts. To be honest, once the first letter is typed into the message area, the microphone is gone. You also have to hold it down for a second or two for it to activate, so tapping it slightly will not activate it, it has to be more intentional.
Actually no, Ive sent voice recordings by completely accident 3 times now (twice which have caused embarrassment) - which is why I am here checking this thread. Its incredible frustrating that we cannot turn this feature off. I will make a complaint via the link provided earlier in the thread. Cheers
This had absolutely disastrous results for me too as an accidental recording cost me my job!! Total accident but my boss doesn't believe me. Had no idea this was so easy to do :-(

II've found if I close iMessage and swipe up to fully close it, when I reopen it the microphone part is gone. I've no idea how I turned it on in the first place but it would be nice if it could easily be turned off please....
Not sure how you got that to work, since the Learn More link is just a Safari link to more Apple information, and the Group Messages does not turn that off for mine, and never has. I don't have Group messages turned on anyway. I don't need it off, since I find it difficult to accidently record and send something, since it requires you to hold down the button to record something as I said in an earlier response. The one thing that will turn it off is if your message is a text message rather than an iMessage. The audio is only for iMessages.
This has happened to me MANY times. So often that I'm paranoid about it and always checking to be sure it didn't happen again. I'm glad to read this thread and have just sent feedback to the Apple link provided.
Your problem has nothing to do with the subject of this thread. This thread is users complaining about the existence of the recording feature. You are experiencing a bug that is present on some devices since the iOS 9.x update. There are several workarounds for right now, but we are hoping that it will be fixed in iOS 9.1. You can go into Settings>Messages, and toggle on/off either Show Subject, or Character Count. Most have reported that, or force closing messages and opening it back up again has worked. It happened to me once on my 5s, prior to getting my new 6s. I was able to get it to go away by just closing that message, opening an existing message, and then opening the other one again.
