Mail not fetching new messages from GoDaddy IMAP

In both 10.10 and now with 10.10.1, Mail does not seem to want to fetch new messages from my GoDaddy IMAP account reliably. All of the other accounts seem to get new messages when they arrive at the server. I'm sure there are messages in my Inbox, as they're showing up immediately on my iPhone. "Synchronize All Accounts" does not seem to resolve the issue and I have to quit and relaunch Mail. The messages then come in immediately. I have mail set to check for new messages every minute. I can see it checking the GoDaddy account in the activity window, but it does not retrieve the messages.

I spent some time with apple support yesterday. They know about this problem and have for quite some time. He told me to customize by toolbar and put a "go offline" button on it and to occasionally hit the "go offline" and then "get mail" buttons. I said thanks for the workaround and then explained how this is just a workaround. He talked about how it was a how mail behaves with some servers...tried to get me to think it was normal. But after pursuing it a bit further with him, he admitted they have been talking about it for quite some time, get a bunch of calls on it and don't have solution. Not good.

Wow, that is incredibly disappointing & discouraging. My issue didn't start until I upgraded to Yosemite so it's obvious, in my situation, that it's been related to this upgrade. And now it's been happening to my iCloud & GoDaddy account both. And also taking my accounts offline no longer works. I either have to Rebuild my Mailboxes or restart the Mail.app. This is very frustrating. I'm constantly missing important emails. This is getting embarrassing and I will, no doubt, be on the possible verge of losing clients if I can't reply quickly if required.

I am appalled at Apple's inability to fix this issue which I have had since Mavericks. This issue has also affected my iOS Mail.

I have been using Sparrow Lite for the last couple of weeks and it has been great. It is basic app, but reliable so far. I was going to try Thunderbird for OS X but decided to keep using Sparrow after reading some bad review of Thunderbird.

On iOS, I am using CloudMagic which also has been rock solid.

It is RIDICULOUS that I have to abandon Apple native mail apps on OS X and iOS for third party software and that I think those apps are ROCK SOLID because the can simply receive my email when it is sent to me.

This isn't a minor issue which I or any other user should have to live with or find a workaround.

Exactly. That is a workaround and not a fix. And in my case taking the Accounts offline/online doesn't even work for me and there's no Rebuild Mailbox custom menu item either sadly.

I'm using Postbox now and also tested Mail Pilot, they both retrieve IMAP GoDaddy emails perfectly fine, so it's obvious that it's an Apple Mail.app issue. If other applications work fine why can't Apple fix their own Mail.app? This is not a GoDaddy issue obviously.

I prefer to use Apple's Mail.app because there are several very cool & productive plugins that are made for the app that make my life so much easier but it just does not work, absolute fail.

This is beyond puzzling and incredibly frustrating.

FWIW...my Mail app got "confused" this morning and would no longer read mail from my iCloud account. It was complaining that it was timing out trying to make a secure (or even unsecured) IMAP connection to the server. I ended up doing a chat session with Apple Support (a very good experience) and the tech led me through doing a number of things so he could confirm my perception (and rule out the obvious).

He then had me delete the iCloud account from my system and re-add it. This did not resolve the issue. We then had me reset NVRAM and voila! Mail started fetching as expected -- thousands of messages had to be read due to the account having been deleted earlier.

The reason for this post is to inform others that my GoDaddy mail seems to be fetching properly since this event, although nothing whatsoever was done to the GoDaddy account.

The tech said he resets NVRAM about once every four years as a matter of practice. I do recall others indicating they've tried this without benefit, but I thought I'd post my experience in case others want to try this rather innocuous measure.

Interesting. I have zapped my PRAM previously but it had no affect on this issue, but I have never reset my NVRAM, since it's usually never ever needed. Can you please confirm that these were the procedures he had you follow and did this also fix your GoDaddy IMAP account or just your iCloud account. Thanks!

While booting your Mac, hold down the keys Command + Option + O + F. This will boot the computer into Open Firmware.

At the Open Firmware 0 > prompt, type each of these lines followed by the return key:

reset-nvram

reset-all

Well...I'm now not so sure it made a big difference for GoDaddy (my iCloud account is working fine). I may have been too eager to pass on my experience, since it seemed positive.

In any case, resetting NVRAM and PRAM is basically the same thing, as I understand it (NV=non-volatile and P=parameter).

Shutdown the computer. When you start it up, hold down the Option-Command-P-R keys at the same time before the gray screen appears and wait for the chime (I waited for 2 of them) and then release the keys. The computer will reset NVRAM and then boot normally.

Oh, darn, gotcha. Thanks though. PRAM and NRAM are two different things (as you described correctly) and from my understanding are reset two completely different ways. I don't think it matters how many chimes/boots you hear when resetting the PRAM, all you're doing is resetting the PRAM, period. NRAM is a whole other beast. I reset my PRAM about once a month, but have never reset my NRAM because it's never been attributed to any issues that I've experienced. If the tech did not have follow the procedures I previous mentioned, I highly doubt you actually reset the NRAM. Is there anyone else familiar with these and could offer their expertise also? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It is hard for me to logically believe this could fix the problem. It seems to be a protocol problem with godaddy imap mail and apple mail interactions. I went in and moved all my godaddy emails to a mailbox on my mac. Completely emptied out my mailbox. Then I rebuilt it and everything has worked great for about a week now. I still have to go offline and back on occasionally, but not often. I just have to be on my mac to see the old emails.

The fact of the matter is that I could not connect to my iCloud account until after NVRAM was reset. I don't know what all is stored in NVRAM that impacts Mail. However, I do know my GoDaddy account, perhaps coincidentally, was getting new mail far more reliably after the reset. It continues to get new messages from GoDaddy in a fashion that I perceive to be more frequently than prior to the reset. I'm not claiming this is the solution. I was merely passing along my experience in case it helped the cause in some fashion.

It's not just IMAP. I'm using POP3 and it happened to me. The only consistency I can find so far is that Apple failed to upgrade Mac Mail in Yosemite. This failure leads to the eventual corruption of the plist settings file in mac mail. This is why no matter how many times you resent, reinstall, or temporarily fix the issue it will still continue to happen. Apple needs to upgrade the entire Mac Mail version to be compatible with the new OS X system.

I don't think this is an Apple only issue. I switched to Microsoft Exchange online a few weeks ago and haven't had a single issue with receiving email or syncing. Call Godaddy and talk to a rep about your email issue, they'll try to upgrade you to an Exchange plan on Microsofts servers through Godaddy. Ask them what they think of the shared server your email is currently on.

Email is complicated and since I rely on it I need: 1. A company with up to date email servers and maybe most importantly for a mac user 2. Apple wanting to be compatible with this company.

Leaves me (from my experience) with iCloud, Gmail or Exchange and I need a custom domain so exchange it is. I've had this same issue since upgrading to Mavericks, it was never resolved and Yosemite was released and I still had the same issues with only the Godaddy accounts.
