Can't resize Excel spreadsheet

Thank you Ashtree for describing my problem so well. Incredibly the oversize window and preview pane problems have now gone away.

I did not rebooted my MacBook Pro, but I did the following:

(1) Closed all my open applications and then did a routine backup using Time Machine. (Previous back-up 11 August)

(2) Ran Excel 2008 and tested for oversize windows and SAVE AS preview pane. No problems.

Closed excel 2008 and opened excel 2011.

Tried many normal operations, including full screen mode, no problems.

I am at a loss. What cured the problem?

How weird!!! First Excel 2008! I wonder if I've still got that.

Just remembering pre Yosemite, it maybe that one could:

click the top left Max ➕ button > Excel screen full size with tabs > then resize by clicking on the window outlines,

but of course the Max button now goes completety full screen. Admittedly the tabs are then visible but can't resize window.

Holding Option-click on the resize buttons top left offers the previous Max ➕button, but clicking on it in Excel does nothing.

Installed Excel 2008, open file generated from Excel 2011, all tabs visible - but reopening in Excel 2011 still no tabs, so you are lucky! Also bottom of Save As dialogue box in Preview still not visible. However, I'll use Excel 2008 and avoid the tiresome problem there so thanks for the tip!

Lucky? Apparently not. The problem with oversize windows and oversize SAVE AS pane has returned to spreadsheets that were fine yesterday.

Are we the only two people facing this issue? ZOOM WINDOW and RETURN or ESCAPE are work-arounds, but what are we doing to cause the problem?

Well there are 18045 views of this thread so maybe we're not alone but might as well be for all the Apple response there's been!

I might summon the energy to take my laptop into the "genius" bar ... not too much sign of genius in previous encounters! but at least they might notice.

Meanwhile back to Excel 2008 for laptop spreadsheets, but how annoying. Could you try Microsoft to explain the Excel 2008 solution?

menu bar click on "WINDOW" & click "Zoom Window." , Now , can RESIZE it

Yes, it seems ZOOM WINDOW is essential for re-sizing spreadsheets, since the newest version of Office 2011 (14.5.5) does not seem to change anything.

Sadly, the SAVE AS window also remains oversize, so one is left with ESC (cancel) and RETURN (save) to provide the two hidden options.

It seems to me that this support discussion if not quite the right place to discuss the SAVE AS issue.

"save as Panel" sometime (intermitent ) is oversize , it is a software bug. sometime i see it. i just closed EXELL , then shutdown system , power ON again , it will work fine, it is small bug Microsoft must fix it.

This stupid "save-as" bug where I can't add a new folder because the bottom of the screen is cut off drives me nuts. I try to hover below the screen to pick up the new folder button, but that doesn't work either. The only solution I can figure out is to either reboot, or make a new folder manually in the finder so I can save my file in a place I'll be able to find it again. I have to do this (make folders out of a program in order to save a file in a new folder) on a PC I have that is running old software on a Windows98 machine. I shouldn't have to this in this decade with a new Mac. It is crazy that I can't move my Macbook from my desktop (where I hook up to two monitors in addition to using the one on the Macbook - so 3 at once), to an LCD projector, to stand-alone, without it being able to figure out on it's own that it is on the Macbook monitor. This same issue with using other monitors causes problems with PowerPoint as well. When I open files, they don't appear. I have to use Window "Arrange All" to get them back.

Thanks to testas@free.fr This worked! I was desperate. You go under the WINDOW menu and hit arrange. Then the corner will appear so you can resize.

give more detail -> so other can LEARN ===> ?? even the DUMP person can understand easy...

WINDOW--> Arrange --> ??? which one ??!!

4 option ?? which one to chose then next ...

Go to top menu bar, Window > Zoom Window. The spreadsheet window resizes to fit the screen.

Perfect easy solution. That was driving me crazy!
