Can't get Yosemite to find my scanner (frustrated)

Hey there everyone.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and a SSD 500GB HDD in my mid 2012 Mac Book Pro. I previously had my Canon Imageclass 8280cw printer/scanner installed on my last hard drive. The printer and scanner worked on my original hard drive. After I installed Yosemite and the new SSD drive the scanner won't recognize my computer like it did before. I've been trying a bunch of different things the last week. Luckily I have my old drive still intact so I boot from it via slam drive if I have to scan, but it's super slow. I should mention that the printer works on my new SSD but I can't get the scanner to recognize the computer. I added the printer via the printers/devices screen just like I did last time and it won't recognize it. Has anyone else had this issue or figured out how to deal with it? I'm not sure if it's an OSX issue (it worked before though) or something else. At this point, I'm lost and not sure what to do and I need this scanner. I keep driving over to my parents house to scan something if I need it.

Thanks,

Mike

I had this problem with my canon, but I found this procedure on the HP site. Except for the driver software part, the apple procedure might help, and it seemed to work for me.

Reset Printing System

  1. Click the Apple icon ( User uploaded file ), and then click System Preferences.
  2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.
  3. Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
  4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
  5. Type the correct Name and Password.
  6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected

Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus ➕ symbol.Repair Disk Permissions

  1. On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
  2. Double-click Disk Utility.
  3. Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
  4. Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window. Once the repair is complete, restart the computer and download and install the HP Printer Drivers for OS X. Now when you add the printer, you should have the HP driver to choose. If for any reason your printer driver is not there, then select the AirPrint driver.
    1. Select Add other Printer or Scanner User uploaded file
    2. Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can select the printer driver (or AirPrint)User uploaded file

Please let me know how this works out. If you require further assistance I will happily do all I can to help.

Eric...I couldn't even get Canon to fix my problem, but you nailed it!!

I was previously running a Yosemite machine...and the scanner worked. Then at some point (presumably after and update) it stopped working (no driver found).

Was about to give up and found this solution. I had a handful of errors in the permissions that disk utility fixed, and that solved my problem!!

Thanks so much...you saved me $100+ and a huge headache!!

R.J.

PS: This was an iMac 27'. Scanner is a Canon ImageFormula P-208. Of note...Canon says they don't have a driver for Yosemite...but the driver for Mavericks works on Yosemite.

I have been having a similar problem (Canon MX860 hard wired ethernet) where I get it working, use it to scan, then the next day, it's gone again. I can log out and in, or reboot, then OS X can see it again. Going to the prefs and trying to see it fails, but I can http to it and know it's working. The only thing that has worked is logging out and in.

Does anyone know if there's a unix command to reload/refresh the OS X scanner driver so I don't have to log out and in all the time? It ***** when it takes so long and I have to go through so many steps just to scan a page.

If there's no easy command to refresh it, then my next attempt will be to give it a permanent IP reservation and see if that helps.

Hi I am also having problems locating my scanner in Printer/Scanner and Image Capture, although the printer is recognized in the Printer/Scanner and the printing function works fine after installing the driver. I am using Canon MP 240 series.

I have tried everything from resetting the printer settings in Printer/Scanner section to resetting the printer itself. I have also installed Scan Gear and MF Utility. However, when I entered the IP address in the MF Utility and it tells me that it is valid and correct, a pop-up then shows up saying it can't locate the printer (duh?!). I don't see any further options of adding a remote printer and am now stuck. What should I do? Please help! Thank you.

Tried Eric J Normans tip. It it did not help.

PRINTING

I can print to my MG7550. No problem through the USB cable.

SCANNING

Tried doing it through the printer. Fail: Processing... Please wait momentarily. Then back to scan window!

Through Preferences 'Open Scanner'. Fail: Waiting for scanner...

Through Canon Quick Menu. Fail: Searching for scanners. Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons: Scanner is turned off. (it's certainly switched on!), USB cable is disconnected (eeerm, nope, its connected and allows me to print!). Code: 15,156,1

This is a massive pain in the backside!

Oh. Im running OS X 10.10.5 and have the latest drivers for the MG7550.

Any help would be great.

Hi Eric,

I am having similar troubles with Yosemite and my Canon MP520. I've followed your instructions to the letter, but went to the Canon website to download the drivers. This being said, they don't offer Yosemite drivers, only Snow Leopard, so I gave that a shot.

It's a no go. I am able to print without an issue, but it won't recognize the scanning portion of my printer/scanner combo. Do you have any advice for me?

Cheers,

Katherine
