An APC Back-UPS and the Mac Pro

I run the Mac Pro in OSX 10.4.7 most of the time.

I just connected in my brand-new APC Back-UPS 1500RS to support the Mac Pro. The latest version of their software, the v1.33 Preferences Pane, won't open and a message instructs to me talk to APC for a later version. Ha-ha! v1.33 is the latest version.

So the MacOS cannot administer the UPS or receive any alarms, etc.

So I was wondering how people were managing this problem. In the interim, do I get rid of the UPS or what? Maybe, the UPS can still do its main function unsupervised?

BTW, when I'm in WinXP, the Windows version of the software works okay. Unfortunately, as I said, the MacOS is mostly operating.

Suggestions please?

That is correct. A 750 will not hold a MacPro up for longer than a minute, if it holds it up at all. I would suggest going with an APS BackUps 1000 VA or higher (1200, 1500, etc).

Incidentally, I had a discussion about this with our Apple rep recently. There is a really nice littel web app that will tell you exactly what is recomended for each Mac model.

For the G5 and Mac Pro, you will have to look under "Servers" instead of "Workstations", and then click the "Servers" button. Although I did not find the MacPro in this list, I believe that it is close enough to a G5.

Hi Hatter,

I just did the same thing, and was shown three choices -- ranging from the 750 ES unit I already have to a 900 unit. I also indicated an inkjet printer, 3 internal drives, and external drives.

AHA! I went back and went through the Server side, then workstation. I chose the Xeon MP Dual, thinking that might stand for MacPro Dual. Same peripherals as above ...
Now I was shown three choices, starting at 1500. More like it.

If I select options for just the MacPro, with three internal drives, no peripherals, the recommendation backs down to start at the 800 RS unit.

(And the trusty Beige G3 on Panther and dialup did all this while I see your MacPro on Tiger had a problem? Just had to gloat a bit ...)

Most likely APC and Firefox 2.0, not the MacPro... or just had to click again.... tower + accessories...
... went back, clicked again. Include dual 23" Apple Cinema Display. Adding ATI X1900 XT adds another 100-125W to a system, too.

(I always choose 40% extra capacity. Plus, I put two displays and peripherals on 2nd XS1500)

Your (or my old Beige MT) won't hold a candle (the wind and whiplash hitting the gas would blow it away) as the MacPro flatten the hills. I was surprised how easy it is to open 40 web pages and still continue working and backing up. My G4 MDD would take too long, choke, and was running at 100% cpu much of the time. 😉

If I add the ATI graphics card instead of the stock card, which I plan to do, I should then increase the size of the Back-UPS? In my preferences on the APC site, I did choose up to 2 PCIE cards, thinking that would do the trick. No?

Believe me, I'm looking forward to the new speed. Just had to tweak you a bit, since you're a familiar face from the Beige forums, and I knew you could take it!
