I've been having the same problem ever since I downloaded the new version of iTunes.

This is not a windows problem, its caused by the apple servers being overloaded following release of itunes plus, check out the mac itunes users discussions which are also full of network timeout complaints. I tried to upgrade 17 tracks and it took 36 hours to complete, got the usual apple support response blaming my side (firewall, anti-virus etc....) but I use itunes all the time with the same settings so would ignore all these windows under the hood tweaking advice, if your setup works normally and then suddenly slows down then assume its a server/network problem, hate to think of people pulling working systems apart based on this advice. Wait until the servers can cope then try again...Of course OSX offers a superior environment for networking whereas windows is built assuming the users has a technical background.

While the 'rush' was on I cringed over and over again at the advice (which always seemed to work for someone) to virtually uninstall and reinstall all software, disable firewalls, rename Host files, disable virus protection etc etc. Of course, I had plenty of time to sit and read this as I also waited nearly 36 hours for my music to download. It was worth it though.

Yes, usual level one advice from most technology companies (reboot, reinstall it all again etc..) but not useful to the majority of users. A short message to users from apple indicating that due to the success of itunes plus we are having increased loads placed on our servers would have be a better response. Then everyone could sit back and wait until it was resolved...if the same level of server capacity (and customer service) is used when other larger companies decide to remove drm then it will be chaos! A useful beta test for apple!

This is a conflicting software connection issue.

Most often it is caused by McAfee security software but it can be other security software as well.

Here is some information on connections:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300870

You will need to configure your firewall(s) to allow access to iTunes and Apple sites.

Also, you can use the Network Diagnostics tool in iTunes to help determine what is causing the error:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304313

Lastly, if you still haven't located the conflict, you can use MSCONFIG to isolate the program causing the issue:

Hope this helps!

I'm having this trouble. I've been looking through this thread and see that everyone is using Wondows. I use a mac. I just paid £10 for tunes from the iTunes store, got this error message for each of them. And now they have disappeared. Not on my machine, not in 'downoads' not in 'purchased music' not in 'music'. Zip. Have I paid for a whole load of nothing?
