6 + Grey Bar at top of screen, screen un-responsive

Two weeks ago I noticed that a small grey flickering bar would appear at the top of my screen when unlocking my phone. Sometimes it would just go away and other times it would linger and my screen either: would not accept any touches, or the touches would register incorrectly and open un-wanted apps or type wrong things.

Took it to the Apple store last Saturday, Genius's looked at it and saw the issue, did a screen replacement. It is now one week later and the issue just re-surfaced. I am about to do a full restore on the phone to see if that helps.

Anyone else with this issue???? I will post an update after the restore. None of the people at my store had seen this issue before.

Thanks

-Tom

Yes, this is a well known defect affecting many 6/6+. It is a defect of the one of the two touch ic chips on the logicboard. It can be solved by replacing the touch ic on the board as a board-level repair. Finding someone local to do micro-bga chip replacement on the board can be a challenge, but there are a handful of great independent repair shops that do this repair across the US every day. ******** Make sure to ask if the shop will replace the touch ic, versus those that will "reflow" the chip. Phones that get replacement chips do not have this issue come back, "reflow" is an inferior repair for this issue.

Before taking your phone to any independent repair company, do some research. There are many that are simply not qualified to do board level repair, or even general repair. Know that your out of warranty option for replacement of the device at Apple (trade in your phone, pay $349 for 6+) may be voided by seeking independent repair, however in my experience I have never seen this happen.

If your phone is still within the 1 year limited warranty, then Apple will certainly swap your device for free. If you are only a few months out from the end of your warranty you may want to give it a shot. Apple stores are well aware of this common defect and most realize that this is a failure of the touch ic.

Also--because this is a known board level defect, software solutions can not solve a hardware problem. No amount of restoring software will solve this problem.

HHad the exact same thing happen yesterday. Grey line at the top of the screen rendered my touchscreen unusable. It increased in size taking over more of the screen as time progressed.

Took it into Apple today and the woman tech said it was a known issue and I'd get a free replacement.

she set up the new phone but then another tech 'genius' came up and said Apple wasn't replacing phones for this issue for free.

So $320 later I have a new iPhone 6s and I guess I wait another 13 months till the same happens to this phone.

Salt in the wound: she said if Apple recognizes it as an issue I'll get a refund in the future. Why isn't my phone hardware dying on me an issue exactly?

I am going on what will be my 5th 6+ in less than two months. Apple still refuses to even acknowledge this as an issue. Well apple chat won't, if you speak to someone at an Apple store they are all aware of the issue and will swap your phone out. But the issue being what it is the problem keeps popping up again and again.

Really starting to regret going back to an iPhone.

Exact same thing happened to me Sunday. Apple Guy says "Yeah we've been seeing this, We don't know what causes it or how to fix it, but you're in luck"

I'm thinking cool ok, this might be ok. Then he comes back and says, "So the phone isn't in warranty anymore so the best we can do is have you buy another one."

I should've made a scene, but I was too stunned at having a $1,000 piece of electronics crap out on me and the manufacturer not offering anything to me but the option to buy another one.

This is definitely the touch ic chip on the board. There are two, the smaller one is usually affected when the phone presents with visual artifacts like flashing gray bar. It is repairable by independent repair shops that specialize in microsoldering, and is quite an epidemic right now in iPhone 6/6+

The underlying problem is a cold joint that adheres the touch ic to the board. Sometimes you can get relief by simply pressing on the touch ic to get it to make better contact---but this is a temporary solution. Reflow of the touch ic is also a temporary solution, since the pad on the chip not making contact is oxidized and not able to make a quality joint. Replacement of the touch ic is the permanent, robust solution. Many shops can do this work, find one with a good reputation and one that is already aware of this super common problem the second you say "grey flashing bar"

This happened to me too and I was out of warranty so I brought it to Apple and they made me pay $350 for a new iphone 6+! I always had a thick protective case with my phone, and even had the tempered glass screen protector, and I barely ever dropped it, so no cracks. So after getting my new phone that I was so unfairly charged for, this started happening again (right after the 1 month warranty that came with it) ! Like this is a problem that is totally out of our control and that Apple should supply us with a new replacement phone for free! This is just an unfair money grab. How do we know that there isn't someone on the phone flicking switch and just malfunctioning this phone to get more money from us?

I got this exact same "solution" from my apple store. I get some tip to apply pressure on the top right and bottom right corners of the phone. It seems to help but this is totally a temporary thing and is not a long term solution. Apple needs to recall any phones having this issue immediately. Mine started doing this literally 2 weeks after the 1 year warranty ran out. Coincidence? I think not! Complete BS!

I Have the exact same problem. This is a hardware issue. My brother have the same phone with the exact problem. He was lucky to be on warranty. They change his phone. I am out of warranty and my carrier refused to change my phone. I have been using iphones since the begining and this Iphone 6 plus is not to the quality I was expecting from Apple. My next phone Iphone SE. I hope that one is ok....

Well I called Apple and told them the whole story. The first person I talked to seemed to understand the problem, but only could tell me to call AT&T since they are the carrier. I told them that doesn't make sense, you're the manufacturer, you should replace this. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I explained the story again. The supervisor was very helpful and told me to go to the Apple store where they would replace or repair it for free. I went to the Apple store, they looked me up, and they gave me a new phone. The Genius told me that they wish Apple would admit this phone has this issue, because she said she sees it a lot. So don't give up guys, call Apple and see what they can do. It worked for me.
