I had to delete everything on my computer and install the operating system again , but I had to install Snow Leopard because it was the cd that came with the computer when I bought it. The problem is that I had already paid for the OS Lion and even had upgraded to the Mavericks . I do not think it's fair to have to pay again and I would like to upgrade my operating system without having to pay again for the same system.

Software Update isn't an option due to the internet issue I described. 30 seconds is about the max I get before everything locks up, and I've tried ethernet and wi-fi. I don't understand why the Apple website won't work via my iMac though. I should get a file even if it's not compatible with my current OS (Yosemite), right?

The problem isn't on Apple's end. I just downloaded the file without issue.

Try restarting into Safe Mode and try again. Do that by restarting and holding down the Shift key. You'll get the login screen for your accounts even if the Mac is set to automatically login.

This may or may not help as the problem may be a badly configured router, or a problem with your ISP.

Well, just had a DUH moment. The problem on the iMac was Safari. Not the first time I've had issues downloading Apple files using Safari. When I used Firefox it worked. Now to see if I can get it installed on the MacBook and go from there. I may have to holler back at you. Thanks.

Ah! Glad you figured it out. Yes, Safari is falling behind on web standards since Apple is only doing security updates for Snow Leopard. Though that still shouldn't have prevented you from downloading the updater.
