System keyboard lags after iOS 8.1.1 update

After upgrade of the iOS to 8.1.1 I faced recurring lags while tapping system keyboard on my iphone 6 (MG4A2RU/A). Now when I type, keyboard and, it seems, the whole device as well, occasionally hangs for 1/2 to 2-3 seconds typically or even more. The issue does not depend on what type of app is running (custom or system). It happens approx. 5 times per minute and drives me really mad. When lag is over I can instantly see the text I wrote during lagging.

Things I've tried:

  • A common device reset. Ok, didn't even hoped It would help. And yes, I was right 🙂
  • Performed full settings reset. It solved the second issue I met first I installed iOS 8.1.1: absence of keyboard shortcuts in settings app and inability to add them.
  • Restore with iTunes from from backup. Seemed to work, yet this feeling lasted not long. Keyboard lags continued after a while.
  • Restore with iTunes using IPSW of the previous version of iOS - 8.1 (12B411) and set up from backup. Even this did not help.

Please help me to fix this or at least tell It will be fixed in a new update...

After having to deal with this keyboard lag issue for almost a year, and having tried the solutions xankraegor mentions and others, I decided to do a fresh install in a brand new iPhone 6 Plus. No update, no restore from backup, just a fresh beginning in a new iPhone. And the lag was there.

Luckily I've found this thread, and tested the iCloud Drive off solution. It fixed the keyboard lag for good - well, for a month or so, now. I keep it off all the time, because as soon as I turn it on, the lag is there again...

It is very sad that Apple has done nada about this issue. I've had this problem since the first day of purchase (iphone6). It certainly resolves the issue by turning of icloud drive, but that is not an acceptable reason not to fix the bug at all. I've been waiting for an update that would fix this but none of all the updates have. Thanks Apple, for nothing.

I Confirm. I went to the keyboard shortcuts menu and discovered my shortcuts are corrupted. There is one shortcut that I cannot delete. As I try to delete it it keeps reappearing.

Here is a YouTube link:

The same happens on all my iOS 8 devices, whereas on my MacBook there is no problem, I can delete all the keyboard shortcuts without any problems.

I am trying to figure out a solution. I also speak with apple care but still there is no solution.

All of you that you have this problems, do you have any device THAT IS NOT iOS 8 or Yosemite?

It could be an non iOS8 or Yosemite device causing this since they are not compatible with iCloud drive?

Also, do you ALSO have problems accessing camera from the locked screen?

Ok I have got somewhere. This is a solution that worked for me, having problem from iOS 8 Launch, and being desparate for a solution. You just have to have a Mac to do it. Do it with your own risk.

Open terminal and paste:

ln -s ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/ ~/Desktop/Real\ iCloud\ Drive

This will create a shortcut of the "real" iCloud drive on your desktop. This means that in this folder not only you see everything that Apple approves you to see but also everything that is hidden from you.

Open the folder named "Real iCloud drive" and select the list view. No other view will work. Consider some time in order to let your Mac sync all the files with the cloud, so let the folder open on the finder for some time.

When everything appears, find the folder named "Settings". Be careful: this folder might be translated to your language (mine was Ρυθμισεις in Greek).

Press the arrow in order to show the folder contents.

Inside there should be a folder called "Dictionaries". This must be the folder causing all the keyboard lag. And yes, you have to delete it. You have to delete it again and again, as long as it needs in order to keep the problem fixed.

In my experience, I deleted it and used my iPhone in order to delete once again the buggy shortcut. As long as I deleted it I tried to write something in the notes. I had still problem! I saw on my Mac that the folder reappeared and I deleted it again, and I deleted again the shortcut from my iPhone. I used the iPhone and it is OK a day and more now!

Also, I had to do the same procedure also for my iPad. I did it an hour or something after I realized and made sure my iPhone worked fine.

Now there is no buggy shortcut in neither of my devices and there is no keyboard lag, with iCloud open of course!

I hope it works for you also!
