Super Slow Powerbook After Yosemite

My 2010 Powerbook boots up slower each time (up to 10-15 minutes sometimes), and is overall slowed down after upgrading to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago.

Tabs open slowly, I get the spin wheel a lot, have to wait for apps to open, etc. I've also started getting error messages about plug-ins not working or scripts not running.

So far I have:

repaired permissions

reset the SMC

uninstalled printers

no improvement

Someone here on the forums suggested to first look at third party software that might not be compatible with Yosemite. Then update the software that is compatible. For example it looks like many of your internet plugins might be "old"."

I don't know how to do this though. Can someone help?

You are making this very complicated when it's really very easy. The only reason for downgrading to Snow Leopard is if you must do a clean Erase and Install and have to replace the HDD or must repartition the disk. I've given you a procedure for reinstalling OS X without erasing the drive. Backup your files and follow the procedure. You won't lose anything. First things first: get the system working as it should.

Jan 2, 2015 6:04 PM in response to Kappy

It is not that I don't want to reinstall Yosemite or follow the steps you recommend. But as I said earlier, I already did a clean reinstall of Yosemite a couple of weeks ago, and when I mentioned that earlier today, you said that most likely another reinstall wouldn't help then. Or did I misunderstand? If you think it would be helpful to reinstall again, I will.

Jan 2, 2015 8:20 PM in response to blind dancer

If we back up a bit and look at the earlier part of this topic. You did a reinstall, posted a new EtreCheck report that looked fine. I'm not sure where we were going from there. You then stated you always had programs that showed up as non-responsive (red) in Activity Monitor. I suggested they could be incompatible and needed to be upgraded or replaced.

I don't know quite where to go from this point. You've repaired the hard drive and permissions, booted into Safe Mode then back. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think so.

Jan 5, 2015 9:26 AM in response to Kappy

Exactly: Where do we go from here is the question I'm asking. This was a perfectly working machine before I upgraded to Yosemite. Since then, I have followed every step recommended- repairing drive and permissions, booting in safe mode, then normal, when nothing else helped I clean-installed Yosemite, dod software computability check, all of it....My laptop has not functioned well again since upgrading and reinstalling. I sometimes have a few hours of things functioning seemingly well without major slow-downs, then things begin to get wacky- like right now- Safari web content not responding or taking forever, pages becoming irresponsive, Skype quitting unexpectedly, and other scripts not responding, stuff crushing...

I think it's pretty safe to make the conclusion you have not voiced: Yosemite is super buggy with "older" hardware (purchased new only 3 years ago, at the price paid, I expect a much longer life!) So, all in all, it seems that my only option may be downgrading. Or, what is it that you would recommend?

Thank you

Jan 5, 2015 10:13 AM in response to blind dancer

Well, it's surely a puzzle to me. I use computers from 2011 that work perfectly well with Yosemite. If you feel you want to downgrade, then you will need to do the following if your computer came with Snow Leopard pre-installed:

Clean Install of Snow Leopard

Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase

the drive and everything on it.

1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came

with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see

a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue

button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive

size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button

and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended

(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed

with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.

4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup

Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which

you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process

by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your

installation current.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Go to the App Store and download Mountain Lion and upgrade unless you are happier sticking with Snow Leopard.

If your computers came with Lion or later pre-installed then do this instead of the above:

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.

Partition and Format the hard drive:

  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
  3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

Jan 5, 2015 11:20 AM in response to blind dancer

The steps I just posted are to downgrade to Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard. I do not believe you should reinstall Yosemite given the problems you seem to have. If you were to reinstall Yosemite then it should be a clean install where you first re-partition and erase the drive. This is the second method in the above from which you can reinstall Yosemite, but if you don't then it should install the OS X version that was pre-installed on the computer if that version was Lion or later.

Please help!! I removed most adware with AdwareMedic, apparently the OmniBar extension remained and before I was able to remove it, laptop froze, I shut down while holding the power button down and at restart got the prohibited sign. What can I do? Unfortunately I can't seem to able to boot to Recovery Drive as holding the Command+R keys or the Option key only takes me to the same prohibited sign... Please help. Anything I can do?

Jan 7, 2015 4:15 AM in response to blind dancer

Improper removal of Genieo can lead to a problem similar to this. However, AdwareMedic takes special precautions to make sure this doesn't happen when removing Genieo, and in addition, this problem would not prevent you from being able to start up in recovery mode. I suspect you may have some kind of hardware issue. If you have an Apple Store near you, the best thing you could do would be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar and take the machine in for Apple's techs to look at.

Jan 7, 2015 8:03 AM in response to thomas_r.

Thanks, Thomas. Yes, my laptop's been taking up to 20 minutes to boot-up, pretty scary, sometimes I think it never will. Apps, pages, and scripts are "not responding" too often, and overall performance was drastically reduced after upgrading to Yosemite (and even after clean-installing it) So I guess taking it in is what I need to do after I tried everything to fix the issue myself by posting and getting help here.

Thanks!

Can anyone help me with similar slow load problems? Slowness mainly occurs when switching between open applications.

I have pasted my EtreCheck report below...
