iPhone 6 internet problems (not just WiFi)

Hi guys, I just got a new iPhone 6 (64 GB) two days ago and have been loving it so far. However a problem has come up that prevents me from using my iPhone normally.

Every few hours or so when I try to use the iPhone, it can't connect to the internet. It has no problem connecting to the Wifi network but there is no internet connection. I realize this is a relatively common problem on iOS 8 but things get a little weirder.

When I disable my wifi to try to connect to the internet via LTE, the phone still has no internet connection. Once it loses the connection to the internet over wifi it loses connection to the internet via cellular data as well. I can still send text messages and send/receive calls.

The only way to get it start working again is to reboot the device. I've tried resetting networking data and disabling WiFi Networking as suggested by a bunch of sources but it does not help.

I'm thinking it might be a problem with my router as its been a little problematic in the past 2 weeks. My mom, who got her iPhone 6 (16 GB) on release day has the same problem but her problem started before I got my phone. My dad, who got the same phone on the same day as my mom, does not have this problem.

Just to clarify, when my phone is connected to my home network but cannot connect to the internet, I can connect to the internet on my other devices (iPad, laptop, game consoles) perfectly fine. And my mom and I do not always lose internet connection at the same time.

So far this has only happened when my phone is coming off of sleep. But I have not used it for an extended amount of time so I can't say with certainty it won't happen while I'm using it.

The wifi bar (or cone, whatever that shape is) is at full 3 bars 99% of the time I'm in my room. However, since the first time I got this phone the bar has been flashing from full to 1 bar to LTE back to full within a period of 1 sec every minute or so. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how I can try to fix it? Thanks in advance!

My iPhone 6, although connected to the internet and a mobile service, did not appear to be receiving any data as nothing would load. I went through my wifi settings and everything looked normal, but then I saw a reply about the correlation between this problem and the use of a VPN. I do regularly use a VPN so I decided to check these settings, and this is where I found my solution to the problem. The VPN I use was rapidly attempting to connect to the server but was unable to due to a server error on their side. This is what caused the connectivity problems. If you use a VPN and are experiencing this problem I suggest you:

1. Try loading google.com and if this doesn't work, proceed to your device settings

2. Check your wifi settings and see if they look normal/how they usually look.

3. Try connecting to google.com from another device such as a computer. If you can't then the problem is probably something not related to your iOS device.

4. Enter your VPN settings and find a VPN connection that may be in use. Tap the i that follows after the name of the connection and turn the setting 'Connect On Demand' off.

5. Go back into the general VPN settings and turn the VPN connection off.

6. Try to connect to the internet... it worked for me!

I Have had the same problem with iphone6+ on iOS 8.0-8.2. I used to have to reboot phone all the time. Checked routers, checked settings, checked it all. I'm in IT/network security so I'm not new with troubleshooting issues. I noticed when I havnt gotten any new push emails the issue is back. What I try first is to kill any open apps. (Double push home button (not tap for reachability)). Once all apps are closed it normally comes back. Dosnt look like it's just a single app cause. Looks like anything with a stale connection will kill the Internet. But it is definitely software. Not hardware. Could be a ram leak, driver issue, firmware, or Internet api call that bad. like I said, seems an app that used the Internet and has a stale (sleep) connection kills the entire stack.

in any event. If anyone can find any other correlations, add them here. Hopefully 8.3 takes care of it. It's definitely not unique.

I am having the same issue with the internet.

Connection is fine, if a bit spotty on the WiFi. However, the moment I leave the WiFi connection, I can't load anything.

I have full bars of service, 3G coverage, and I also tried in town with 4G coverage as well. No dice.

However, I can still text and send/receive phone calls.

Rebooting does nothing. I have rebooted this phone a dozen times and nothing changed at all.

Using version 8.1.2 and 128GB Iphone. Had it less than a month.

same here internet failed both lte/wifi nothing to do with router and actually it's ios8 problem because ios6 is working fine (i skipped ios7)

i think it's notification related because right after i got notification (which should mean internet is fine) and try to open notification which enter application but it will stuck at loading (which mean internet is already failed)

hope this step to reproduce help Apple engineer figure this out somehow (finger cross)

After iOS 8.2 update, I have not experienced loss of internet anymore. I did not have to reboot my phone since Mar 11 and it seems to work fine until now. I will post an update if I see something different...

Great! Thanks for posting, and please keep us updated if it changes.

Mar 25, 2015 7:14 AM in response to DracoTheGiant

I have worked with Apple support on this and, to date, the only option they can offer is to replace the phone.

Unlike what Draco stated, and no offence meant, shutting down apps does not fix the issue that is directly related to the complaints raised here.

I too am a networking and software guy with over 30 years in the tech industry and have been performing, and training others, troubleshooting for decades.

My experience with this issue is this: It started within a week of receiving the phone -I attempted to open a web page and couldn't; tried several different sites and the wheels just kept spinning. My favorite site for testing is msn.com because that site doesn't use HTTPS and will come up even if the world is burning! I don't use Googe because it wants to immediately switch to HTTS, introducing a potential additional, unrelated failure point.

I then went to my email clients, noticed that I hadn't received anything in several hours.

I assumed it was related to moving between the many WiFi networks I use - home, office, coffee shop, MeFi, etc.

I rebooted the phone and all was well. However, it happened again a few days later; I tried several other tactics, none of which made any difference - rebooting was the only solution (although I seem to remember that trying "Reset Network Settings" may have worked, but don't hold me to that)

I went to the nearby Apple store, met with a Genius who then spoke with someone at Apple. Both said it was the first time they had seen it. Although I told them that the phone could not connect to the Internet via Cell or WiFi, they were sure that, if connected to their in-store WiFi, they would prove it was a problem with all the other WiFi routers in the world and it was simply a settings problem.

It wasn't, so they tried closing all apps, disabling all notifications, going into and out of airplane mode. None of these worked. They struggled for a while and then opined that it might be a hardware problem. Since nothing else was running they figured that had to be it and rebooted the phone. Since it came back up, they assumed it was limited to that phone and provided a new one.

In my mind, it is more likely an OS/Driver bug, possibly related to a design flaw in part of the network communication channel. In any case, I wasn't going to argue, so I took the new phone they offered and went on my way.

I am only on 8.12 (12B440) and have had fewer problems than before, but it has continued. I have been waiting to hear what others' experience with 8.2 was before taking the leap.

I am writing because a) this happened again today for the first time in several weeks and b) I was about to update to 8.2.

I will update and write back with my experience, but anxiously await detailed information from anyone who can provide updates on the new OS

Thanks - Dave

Hi Dave,

Your story matches very similar to mine. I had my phone replaced when I took it to Apple Store when the problem was triggered. It could connect to the WiFi (in the Store) and 3G network but there was no connection to send the diagnostics to the Apple Server. So, I got a replacement. Within a week or so, I got the same issue again on the replaced phone (iOS 8.1.3). I opened another case to Apple directly and after re-discussing the matter, I was informed that there was a new iOS release (8.2) that I should move to. I did so (via iTunes) on Mar 11, 2015 and since then I did not reboot the phone yet. And not lost the internet connection, switching from WiFi to 3G, back to WiFi, etc. I know that there is no remark whatsoever in the release notes of 8.2 about fixing an issue like this but so far it works for me. Just to let you know.

Cheers...

DWSam,

No offense taken. Just trying to get to the bottom of this. For all our sakes.

interesting, may be a partial resolve. When I was on 8.1.x I remember a reboot was the only way to resolve. In 8.2 I have not needed to do that. I'm interested if you upgrade will the symptoms match. I fight with this daily. Closing apps pretty much always resolves it. Maybe a separate issue? Maybe a partI'll resolve in 8.2. But either way I'm intrigued. I've seen people say that they have had the phone replaced and it seems to not resolve issues surrounding this. I didn't see what kind of phone your on. I'm using an iPhone 6+. I wonder if there's any difference. In verson or model. I'm on MGAV2LL/A with modem firmware 1.04.00 carrier ATT 18.1. Trying to see any correlations. Please reply if you have like symptoms with resolutions expressed my me or Dave.

Please do not post IMEI's, phone numbers, MAC's, ICCIDs or serial numbers. you don't want that stuff on a public forum.

Same symptoms with iPhone 6 MG4A2RU/A model. Internet connection (either LTE or WiFi) is working. iPads, MBAs, iPhone 5s connected in same condition to WiFi, iPhone 6 internet connection is down - very slow or no avail. AppStore may be working, however Safari is either hang or not working, no response to address bar search or web site. Looks like software bug in Safari or may be DNS resolution mechanism or something/POLICE/hackers tampering with the device remotely (I am in anti-Putin opposition, so police is known to record cell conversation and even supress specific numbers in some cases). When this happens, battery burned like 5% in a minute.

I am on IPhone 5 iOS 8.2 and see this issue frequently. I started seeing it on my IPad at home and would have to reboot it to fix the issue. Then I figured out if I shut off Wifi and turn back on it clears the issue. Closing apps doesn't work and I don't have push notifications on.

I also have the issue with my phone only where it will refuse to connect to my home wifi with "password incorrect" error. This could last for days then all of a sudden it connects again.

Very frustrating!

Since Mar 11 (the date I upgraded my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.2) I did not have to reboot my phone to restore the internet connection. The device is up and running for 34 days now. This was not the case in any previous iOS releases. I have not upgraded to iOS 8.3 by the way.

Great to hear, thank you for the follow up response! 🙂

Apr 18, 2015 8:54 AM in response to Cool_Man

I have the same problem now I have updated to 8.3. I can connect to wifi at home and work, but cannot use the Internet. It says 'server stopped responding'. I did not have this problem with 8.2. I have tried all help available on the Internet, like resetting network settings, rebooting, even changing router DNS. I have restored my phone from iTunes and still no joy. I spoke to Apple and again it's not an issue they are aware of. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar next week (22/04/15). Will keep you posted.
