But it would probably be somewhat amusing. Seriously, though, I really want to understand this behavior. I don't think one even gets any of those beginner points for replying to a question. But, as the people who ask the question for the 89th time almost never come back, I'm fated not to know.

I am starting to think that those who make such posts don't have the foggiest idea why they are posting. It strikes me more like some of the replies I see in Facebook without any rhyme or reason to them.

Given the information that you have provided, and the fact that you make it a strong point to indicate that you are a pensioner on a fixed income, I suggest you would have to determine how much you are willing to spend on a phone. That decision is going to have to be made on what apps you find important to use, how much space you need to have on the phone to handle your needs, and how much can you spend. You can contact your carrier to see if they have any deals, and Apple does provide some deals on refurbished phones. If Apple does not suit your ability, you can see if any other smartphone fits your budget, however it would require the purchase of apps in another system.

I'd say anything older than a 5s is out.

You could as mentioned get a Refurbished model from Apple, and pay for it in installments if your fixed budget allows for monthly payments for it.
