Airport problems after update

I have been using my 20" Intel iMac for a few months now and have had no problems getting the built-in airport device to connect to my wireless home network. Yesterday, I downloaded and installed the new airport system update, and ever since I've been having big trouble. It doesn't show any available network connection at all (and I know my wireles network is working because my laptop can still connect). If I restart the computer, sometimes it will find my network and sign on, but then it drops the connection after just a few minutes and goes back to saying it can't detect any available networks. Has anyone else had any problems since the new update? Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

I called Applecare and thru a representative found a solution. The preferences simply do NOT want to be updated.

Here is the solution: Drag your System Configuration folder out of your library onto the desktop. Go to your user file, drag your com.apple.systempreferences.plist onto the desktop. Go into System Preferences and reconfigure your network settings as you normally would so that you join your wirless network. Reboot. Problem solved.

Hope this helps those out there still struggling with this.

Little more ellaboration on this above 🙂 since its not naming the exact files.

- Pull these to your desktop:
/library/Preferences/system configuration folder
~homefolder/library/preferences/com.apple.systemprefereces.plist
- Restart the computer
- Once up, go into System Preferences > Click Assist me at the bottom > choose ASsistant.
- Walk thru the setup to join your network
- Once done, in network preferences goto the airport settings, Make sure you choose your network as the prefered.
- Restart the computer
- If it works you can feel free to trash the stuff on the desktop, the OS recreated the files from scratch and they are n ot needed. Unless you REALLy want t put that back in and make it not work agian lol

Bradley Lambert,
I had exactly the same scenario you had. Come to find that it's not just a problem with AirPort, as there are also similar threads regarding failing ethernet connections:

Thanks to craydoh and Pr0X for ferreting out the resolution, although it appears not yet a complete resolution for my Core Duo.

This is not a solution for me. Week 38 MBP - with 10.4.7 I was able to download 700MBs of files over Airport with no problems. 10.4.8 trashed Airport capability. The suggested files were pulled to the desktop - all instructions followed - Airport bars start at 5 and then over the next 30 seconds go to 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - NADA.

WPA is not even showing up as an option in the pulldown menu - WEP is all that is available for selection.

Ethernet connection appears to work as a temporary work around.

Rick,
It sounds to me you have a problem which needs to be dealt with in a new thread. Some form of data corruption has created a situation where all airport options are not being shown. Please let us know in your new thread if your data is backed up from prior to the update, and we can work from there. You may also want to see my FAQ here, as well as this FAQ I wrote:

Pr0X,
Thanks for the help. Actually your fix works, just not completely. Everyone please keep in mind that I'm referring to a Core Duo iMac, not a Core 2 Duo.

It works for all scenarios as long as AirPort is first turned off prior to shut down, restart, or sleep. In all those instances, turning AirPort back on enables automatic reacquisition of the network, although it appears to take longer than if AirPort is simply turned off, and later turned back on, with no change to the operating state of the iMac.

When AirPort is left on prior to sleep, or restart, or shut down and startup, - in all cases the AirPort somehow afterwards assigns itself a useless IP address. This appears on the Network Status pane as a caution signal along with a message that AirPort has self-assigned an IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet.

The final result actually fits in fine with my iMac usage - AirPort is turned on or off for use, and there is no sleep except display sleep after about 5 minutes. However, I know that this will not sit well with many other users, who expect to leave AirPort on constantly as if it were on a notebook.

Once again, thanks to you and to member craydoh for presenting this solution here. Having today upgraded another FORMERLY problem free iMac Core Duo to 10.4.8, I can definintely state that results-wise, this solution goes a good step beyond what is being offered on the Intel-based iMac Support main page in the article: Mac OS X 10.4.8: AirPort does not auto-connect to existing networks after restart or wake from sleep

Unfortunately my wireless problems are continuing and actually getting worse, I think. I've trashed the system config files a half dozen times now, but the problem keeps coming back. Sometimes I can maintain a connection for a few hours, sometimes for only minutes. I've tried turning airport on and off when not in use, but that doesn't solve it, either. I'm losing the connection when I'm in the middle of an online session, not just after sleep. Apple needs to get on the ball about this.

Bradley Lambert,
Mine is also a 20-inch Core Duo like yours, not the newer Core 2 Duo. It was problem free with 10.4.7, and after updating to 10.4.8 AirPort was immediately fading out, losing connection, and then reconnecting, and doing that so rapidly and consistently that it was unusable.

This situation was later exactly duplicated on a second 20-inch Core Duo which had the original 10.4.4 installed, and which was updated to 10.4.7 using a downloaded Combo Update. None of the other updates for apps, etc. were added, in the interest of confirming that the issue occurred specifically when the 10.4.8 update was installed.

On both iMacs, ignoring the title of the Apple Support article, I first did the suggested fix:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
which did eliminate the AirPort connection fluctuation, so that AirPort was again usable. Then the problem was I could never turn off AirPort for longer than three seconds without having to manually log back into the WPA2 network. Of course this meant each time selecting "Other..." and selecting security method, then entering network name and password.

Therefore, next I proceeded with the exact procedure listed above by Pr0X. Both iMacs have had the same result - AirPort when turned back on (after off for any period of time) has a slow but definitely stable auto reconnect, just as long as AirPort is first turned off prior to changing the operating state of the computer (sleep, restart, or shutdown).

I hope this provides the help you need, or at least rings a bell for some other Core Duo user. Best of luck!
