HP Laserjet P1102w by USB "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer"

My HP Laserjet P1102w used to work fine with OS X10.10. Then it started saying "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" whenever I switched it on, but the printer still worked. This morning it didn't. I uninstalled the printer, but can't re-install it - it isn't listed when I click "+". I have tried a different USB cable, and a different USB port - same message. The HP website does not provide a downloadable driver, as far as I can see. What do I do? (The wireless connection to the printer stopped working ages ago. The printer still works with our two PCs via USB.)

I found that Sam Katz1 was correct that wifi had to be off for it to work with usb, but that even when the wifi light was off, I still saw the printer broadcasting on wifi and still I got the error when plugging in the usb cable.

What finally worked for me was a tip I found from 2011 ⚠ that to truly shut off wifi in such situations, "shut the printer down, hold the wireless and cancel buttons together and power the printer back on. Wait for all the lights to flash together and then let the buttons go."

Fixed for me.

Repairing permissions did not fix it for me, instead updating printer firmware did the trick.

Also, this problem only existed through usb wire connection and not with the wireless connection, so i connected wirelessly and updated the firmware, restart and usb cable connection works normally again. Hope this helps.

We have done elaborate tests with this very printer.

If you look at HP's instructions for configuring it, it says to turn Wifi off (which you do by holding down the Wifi button.)

From there, the USB connection will find the printer, but with the Wifi on the USB connection is disabled.

I would recommend powercycling the printer after you turn wifi off if the USB connection seems not to be stable. (ie. does not result in a print job. This happened once in testing.)

If you wish to reconfigure the wireless, that can be done from the Printer Utility as long as the Wifi itself works. select the printer once connected via USB, open the Print Queue, open Settings, HTML Config (meaning Browser) and then a browser window will launch and allow you to re-setup the printer's network settings.

Our preliminary testing indicate this should work through Mac OS Sierra. (the current OS at the time of this writing). It also appears that Apple's servers contain the driver for this printer.

p.s the wireless configuration I'm doing from memory but write back if it doesn't seem to match, or other people can chime in.

Hi,

I'm also having this problem. I updated the firmware and it worked once, but then the next time I tried to print it was doing the same thing. I'm using a laserjet P1606dn via USB cable and I get the same error message every time I plug it in.

Repair Disk Utility/ First Aid didn't do anything. I don't have access to a PC to turn off smart install. How should I proceed?

I did everything Shlomi suggested, no solution. I do not have a PC to use for firmware installation.

I am having printing related issues with the Hp P1102w printer. When connected via USB, some multipage jobs print halfway, out of order and in reverse- then, blinking red light, then after lifting tray top and replacing, rest of job prints on correct direction. On another program, job will not print at all and immediate blinking red light until I lift tray and replace.

I spent 90 minutes on phone with HP rep who told me that firmware should work and that "she's not a computer expert" and "it's Apple's problem". SMH. She messed with my printers wireless connection and now, when I attempt to print job wirelessly, the green light blinks and job stays in print queue as "printing".

Please assist.
