i am not sure... the ball keeps spinning so i cant do or check anything

the imac is a standalone unit about 3 yrs old. i think i have OS8
Wrong. OS8 was available for Apple between 1997 and 1999.
ok....... maybe OS10 i guess. i never really paid that close of attention. i have 1tb as a hard drive

thanks, do you have a sujestion on how to stop the ball. i cant get to anything to start downloading. i cant get to finder either
Try a safe boot. The directions are at OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
Reboot the machine holding command and S.
Lookup the Darwin version reported on Startup. This will tell you what Mac OS X version you are running:

To get out of Darwin, type:
exit, followed by the return key.
