Can I use a Dell P2415Q 4K monitor with my new MacBook Pro 13?

The 24" Dell P2415Q has a published native resolution of 3840x2160 at 60 Mz. It has DisplayPort input. Can I expect that my MacBook Pro 13 with Retina Display (Iris Graphics) will successfully drive this Dell monitor? Are there better 4K monitor options?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Just to clarify that to make it work at 60Hz you'll need mDP to DP v1.2 cable.

It will work like charm, except that your fans will run at about 3500 -4000 rpm all the time.

For sound you'll need to connect external speakers either via display or your Mac's aux 3.5 port.

The experience is overall great though 😉

No, I haven't read that, either, and it may not be necessary to have the NVIDIA card, but with my rMBP 15" I can switch graphics cards manually with a third party app, and I cannot drive the Dell with the integrated Intel IRIS card, only with the NVIDIA.

I suggest you call Applecare or even Apple Sales and get someone who really knows the answer to that, not just someone who gives you an answer, like "I'm sure it would work with the IRIS."

Has anyone found a listing of MBP's and HDMI port versions? I suspect many of you trying to get 60hz are running into the issue due to HDMI 1.4 not supporting 4K 60Hz vs HDMI 2.0. Just a thought.

I have 2 of the Dell 2415Q's and a rMBP 15 2015. I can get full res from HDMI but the TB port is a pain. These monitors are a bit touchy. I've tried an Apple TB cable, the included Dell mDP to DP cable and no luck. Going to try the restart thing again and see if it works...

I bought the OWC TB Dock and ran the 2nd 2415Q off the HDMI in that until it has some issues (currently getting an RMA). That worked great. 2 24inch 4k monitors on a sit/stand arm = work heaven.

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2015 and I'm searching for an external monitor to use with it.

Until now I tried two external monitors: DELL UltraSharp U2515H (25") and Dell P2415Q-C (24").

The first one (U2515H) is 4K monitor and is amazing. A lot. But, there is a but.

The monitor is not sharp (retina, splendid, beautiful) like the second one, the P2415Q that I tried.

The second one has 185 PPI (pixel density: 3840x2160 on 23.8") that make this monitor amazing, beautiful, excellent, LIKE A RETINA DISPLAY!

But, another but.

My Apple Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2015 (yes, the last one, the one with 8Gb of RAM) is crappy and lag a lot using Chrome, Safari and other software in any resolution, INCREDIBLY!!! except the last one (3840x2160). I think because my Mac at the 3840 (4k) resolution doesn't have to manipulate and recalculate any pixel and so it is fast and usable. In other resolutions, also in the Full HD (1920x1080), it is crappy and unusable like this:

I hope this is not a fail of my own Mac, of my own graphic card. Because if just a my problem I have to fix this. Can you confirm this is not just a my problem? Just my pc makes like this? Can you post a scroll on a website with your 13 rMBP?

So, for this reasons, now I'm looking for an external monitor to use with my Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2015 which is at least 21" (max 22!!!) and Full HD (so my mac have just to be a division by two: from 3840/2=1920 and 2160/2=1080, and it will suffer less that a mathematical operation with height like 1440p or 1600p) but the monitor have to be an UHD one, at least high resolution like DELL P2415Q which have 185 PPI.

There is something like this? Thanks in advance.

Gechacha, I don't think it matters much what kind of HDMI cable you use, but I don't know much about the differences. i use one I got from Amazon a couple years ago--maybe it's a 2.0. The issue is that with HDMI you're limited to the high resolution of the Dell 2415Q at 30z, not 60z. To get 60z at the highest resolution, you need a DP cable and it needs to be driven by a video card that will handle it, which I don't think any of the MBPro 13" computers have. You can check with Apple's specs for your particular rMBP to find out.

I don't think any of the MBP Retina 15" /before/ late 2013 can drive a 4K monitor at the highest resolution at 60 Hz. I believe the cable that came with the Dell P2415Q was a DB to Thunderbolt cable. You should be able to run the Dell at the highest resolution and 30 Hz with a standard HDMI cable--I'm pretty sure I did that. I just don't know if the quality or vintage of the HDMI cable matters for this purpose. You might as well get a good HDMI cable, though--they aren't very expensive.

Hi there!

Not an answer to your question since I have a MBP 15" but I thought it could help others in their quest for knowledge.

I can confirm that the Dell P2715Q monitor is working perfectly on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics. It is displaying at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz. It is connected with the supplied cable DP to mDP inserted in one of the Thunderbolt 2 ports.

Thanks!

Hi Ken,

I have a 15' mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina with 8G memory, Resolution is 2880*1800

My external display is Dell U2515H, resolution is 2K, 2560*1440

No matter I tried to use MDP or HDMI to connect the laptop with the monitor, I cannot open HDPI in my DELL display(Scale the resolution to 1980*1080). I tried SwitchRex, but still it didn't work as expected.

I am glad to see you can use 4K resolution with DELL P2415Q. Your success gives me hope. I am not a fan in video game. I am fine with 1080P@30Hz.

Do you think it is due to the type of HDMI cable? I am using HDMI 1.4, should I use HDMI 2.0?

So has anyone else tried this monitor with a 15 inch late 2013 MBP? I have the one featuring the Intel Iris graphic card but no expansion or Nvidia card. Someone mentioned they got it running full resolution at 60hz with just the Intel Iris pro. I'd like to take my mbp to store and try it out if they have it on display there. Has anyone else tried?

Thanks.

Can I use a Dell P2415Q 4K monitor with my new MacBook Pro 13?
