I have finally figured out what Apple could not. When you have a greyed out face time icon and cannot connect to one particular person, HERE IS THE FIX!!!!!!!!!!

Remove that persons email and exchange it for THEIR ICLOUD APPLE ID. Problem solved!!!! You can now access the FACE TIME icon that is no longer GREYED OUT!!!!!

I have the same problem with one contact that has an iPhone. He can communicate by Facetime with other users as well as I also can with other iPhone users, but we cannot communicate between us. We do communicate by Whatsapp though. The video or audio icon in the Contact information is missing. Can you help us with this issue or should I post another question?

I am having the same issue and it's bizarre. I have a colleague at the same location, we both have ipad airs, are both on the same wifi, both have facetime and icloud active. In Contacts, other colleagues have facetime icons next their names, but this particular colleague doesn't. I know he hasn't blocked me, I can facetime him through the facetime app history, but when I go to contacts there are no facetime icons for him. I have reset network connections on both and checked all relative settings. Now another colleague says they also don't have facetime icons for him, but a third colleague does. It just appears so random.

I'm having the same issue. My parents switched to iphone but I was unable to facetime them on my iphone, although on my mac it works fine. I had them facetime me and I picked up on my iphone, and now the icon shows up.. But this is not a fix. Apple needs to fix this. Please report the bug to apple like I did. The more people that report it, the better chance it'll be fixed.

It is a fix. Until your iPhone knows that the other person is a FaceTime user, that option won't be displayed. If you add the contact correctly, then it should work the first time.

A rare, random glitch isn't a 'bug'.

This is not a rare, random glitch.

My parents got iPhones. I am unable to facetime them on not only my iphone, but my sister and wife's iphones as well. All 5 are iphone 6s on latest iOS 9.2.

It's also not a fix, as I just found out. For a time I did see the facetime icon after facetiming from their phones, but now the icons have disappeared for some reason.

And what do you mean add the contact correctly? How do you add a contact incorrectly? Are you saying that both of the contacts are added incorrectly on the 3 iPhones that are having the issue? We are able to iMessage just fine, so clearly the contact is added correctly.. And I am able to Facetime on my Macbook which has the contacts synced.

Why post if you can't help and don't know what you're talking about?

I don't know why this is so broken. I am able to facetime both my parents from the Facetime app from the recent calls list. But if I search for their contact in Facetime app, the facetime icon is greyed out. We just successfully had several facetime calls. I called them, they called me, etc. But the facetime icon still won't show up in Contacts or Messages. I've tried deleting/readding their contacts. They toggled facetime and imessage off and on. Very strange bug.

Incase you don't believe this is a bug...

I deleted my mom’s contact and made a new one on the iPhone. As you can see in first screenshot, no facetime icon is there. Now if I go onto OSX in the Contacts app, there is a facetime icon. (Photo #2).

The strange thing is, if I edit the text field for that contact on iOS and put in a different phone number, one that I know has facetime, the icon pops up. So the OS is checking for facetime capability. My parents just switched to iPhone yesterday so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
