iCloud drive

From Finder, if you move (not copy, but move) files from your Mac to iCloud drive, are said files physically removed from your Mac hard drive?

Working through a web browser wouldn't suit me either, but as I pointed out for someone who hasn't got enough space it's exactly the same as one would do with dropbox.

I am not ignoring this one but frankly, the answer to not having enough space on your HDD is to get a bigger one (IMHO) unsynchronised storage is a pain (at internet speeds).

But if that is what you want then iDrive is the way to go. 1TB of online storage for $50 a year ($15 year one only) a good backup program built in (one that can use a local or network disk or the 1TB online store for backup). Sync is optional (off by default).

This is what you said last time. This certainly isn't possible with Pages and Dropbox, so last time I downloaded and installed the storage system you suggested (can't remember it's name now) and awaited step by step instructions but they never came.

Correct, it is not possible with DropBox (or any other online service). SugarSync is the only one that allows the opening and saving of files from their original locations. That is an important reason why I use it. I have zero time for a filing system that requires me to remember to put some files in one structure (the usual task orientated approach) and others in a specific online folder. I gave up on Numbers et al long ago, it is hopeless, I use Bean for word processing (or Scrivener) so it's really hard to discern anything but drawbacks by using iCloud Drive (for me at least) it would be a retrograde step in many ways (but it would be cheaper, I spend $250 per year for SugarSync)

Not sure why you do this but the original point was simply just that you can use iCloud drive with or without copying files to your computer just like you can with any other online storage service, the reasons people might want to do this are varied and aren't all solved with getting a bigger hard drive.

I apologise then, do you still want them?

Excepting that in my case I also have an iPad and none of those services work as well as iCloud drive with that.

I might be willing to exclude sugar sync from that depending on whether I get step by step instructions from you and can successfully save my pages document back to it, I'm downloading sugar sync now.

Just an FYI To fully use the latest version of ICLOUD on your devices you must have Yosemite on desktops/laptops and IOS8 on IPADS IPHONES IPODS.

If you just need additional storage - add a hard drive either removable - or internal if you can.

For backups - use a removable drive - even if its connected all the time (time machine).

Yes please.

Also at the same time could you also tell me how to open a pages document from sugar sync, all I get is this.

User uploaded file

I assume there must be a way around this, since before one can save a document one has to be able to open it.

I just moved a number of files to iCloud Drive to free up space on my SSD. As that is not possible, I simply want to return the files to their original directories (on my SSD) before subsequently disabling ICD . Unfortunately, I don't have enough local storage to accommodate both the original files and their hidden (ICD created) mirrors.

Unless I'm mistaken, it seems like I should manually trash the local copies first (assuming ICD doesn't immediately recreate them), move the originals back, and then disable ICD.

If this is indeed the best/fastest/easiest way to return my files to their pre-ICD directories, I guess I just need to know where the ICD created copies are stored.

Otherwise, I'd really appreciate the actual solution.

In any case, thanks in advance for any help with this Catch-22.

You are in a rather dangerous situation, you should always leave around 10% of your start up drive empty, by filling it up completely you are likely to end up corrupting files including system files, my I suggest you address this situation as a matter of urgency.

As for current predicament move one file at a time, when you move the file back to it's original location, the hidden copy will be deleted.

Pages 5 files don't work (not even for email transmission) and as I said I gave up on Pages already. Use an earlier version of Pages or stick to iCloud.

But if you are using anything other than the latest versions of Pages, Numbers or Keynote do this.

On your Mac, create a new file (any file, but for this test you must have an app on the iPad/Phone that can open it) and save it wherever you normally would save it.

On your iPad go to the folder you previously saved the file in, tap it and using 'Open In' choose a compatible app and open it. If the app includes editing capabilities change and resave the file.

On your Mac, look on you recent files list or navigate to the folder and open the now changed file.

That's it, unless it is a new Pages/Numbers/Keynote file, but if it is you're already screwed.

The only way I know of is to avoid the Pages 5 file format, If I was stuck with Pages 5 I would use the xlsx format. .Pages is now a joke.

Or stick to Apples house.

Whilst waiting for the instructions for opening a pages document, editing it and then saving it again using sugasync, I've been investigating and also found that opening a word document is rather long winded too from sugar sync and so far have not been able to save the word document back to sugar sync either. I have however found that I can in fact open a pages document from dropbox and then save it back to dropbox, which I was unable to do last time we discussed this. So at the moment sugar sync seems to fall behind both dropbox and iCloud drive for mobile use, and even on the Mac too since it doesn't want to read eSATA drives either. 😟
