MacPro 2009 freezing once after booting

Hello Everybody,

I have the following problem that I didn't find a solution so far.

Early 2009 8-core 2,26GHz with Yosemite (first clean install I did

after buying the mac was Lion and it happened the same on the

older system as well) when I switch on the computer and log in, even

when not touching anything, the computer freezes after a couple of minutes,

like not responds to anything or the grey screen with text that something serious

happened and the system will be rebooted. After it reboots (or after I switch it

off and on again) it works stable. I can not switch it off for a couple of days and

it's ok. When I switch it off again for a night or so, the problem appears again. Could

it be the GT120?

So. If someone had similar problem this is the solution of my particular case. The service had no idea what was wrong. Probably they even didn't open the computer case. What I managed to discover finally, downloading Macs Fan Control hat gives many temperature sensors readings, that my Northbridge Chipset was boiling at 128C. The AHT hint was correct. The Northbridge Chipset radiator was loose. One pin was broken and it even didn't touch the chipsets surface. I didn't buy a new motherboard (what I read people do in such a situation - WOW!), just took nice pins from old PC motherboard. New thermal paste, new pins, whatever I do now, the computer is stable and the Northbridge temperature doesn't exceed 77C... as simple as that 🙂 I must say, I wasn't aware of so many temperature sensors in the mac pro. I thought what istat nano says is everything 🙂

All best!

The pins eating the heatsink on the Northbridge chip can get brittle and snap over time. The problem is rare, but it has been seen here before, and more than once.

To check for this issue, you can power off, remove the slide-out processor shelf (2009, 2010, and 2012 models) and attempt to wiggle the heatsink on the chip at the center of the board, between the two huge processor heatsinks. It should be rock solid. If wiggly, that may be the problem.
