If you just bought it last week the most I'd do is reset the phone by holding both the home button and sleep button at the same time for 10 seconds or so until the Apple logo appears. You won't lose any data. You could also try restoring the phone but since it's brand new I'd just take it back to where you bought it and tell them it's not working properly. They'll likely just give you a new one. If you do want to restore it follow these instructions: Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support

Mine has started calling people in the middle of the night too. Weird thing is, they aren't in my recent calls or in my call log at all. They call me to make sure I'm okay, but I have no record of ever having an outgoing call to them.
The two most likely culprits are a bad charging cable or a bad digitizer. If this is only happening while your phone is charging, try swapping out the cable. Weird though it may sound, a bad cable can cause the phone to do very odd things. If it happens even when not plugged in, you most likely have a bad digitizer. Take the phone in for service.
Sometimes this can happen if the phone is dropped or shook in just a certain way. The digitizer (a series of ultra small invisible cables that detect minor electrical changes to determine where your finger is on the screen) can cross connections and make it appear that your finger is on the screen to your device. Unfortunately this means its likely a HARDWARE issue. Best case scenario you take it to apple and politely ask a technician to help you. "Remember, 1. these guys did not build your phone, 2.they did not break your phone, 3. these guys are here to fix your problem. They don't get nearly as much credit as people should give them." Prices for a screen replacement have recently dropped so it may not be as expensive as you remember to have it done. Of course if your under warranty they should cover the charge for free. BOL
I went through all of this: the behavior of the phone, the "wipe", the problems again. Also, I had the same experience with Apple. I paid $30 and authorized an $800 "hold' against my card to have them ship me a phone overnight while mine is examined and either repaired or replaced. It will take about 2 weeks. As it is my only phone, and I use it for business, of course I said yes. Actually, I think it's pretty reasonable and was glad it was available. Here, it was a hold on the card - not an actual charge, so that helps.
The temp phone arrives today. I am to take my SIM card out and put it in that one.
I don't think I mentioned that a friend of mine had the same problem. He is s super high level exec at a major financial company. He had their cyber forensics team scour the phone for malicious software, hacks, etc. None. They determined it was an after market phone charger that was causing circuitry issues. He says after the reboot, his problems went away. I threw out my after market charger and also a frayed Apple charger, thinking those may have been the issue. THEN I did the full wipe/set up as new phone - and the problem persisted.
I am praying this doesn't cost me anything other than the $30 for the temp phone. Mine is in a great case and had the tempered glass, no water/drops. 100% perfect condition, only 5 months old.
Hello,
I ended up taking my phone in to my service provider and they sent it away to Apple. Apple replaced it with a brand new phone and said it was a hardware issue, so I'm pretty happy now. I'm sorry I mucked around and tried to keep going with the phone the way it was. Yes, it was a pain waiting, but not as frustrating as dealing with a "possessed" phone. My phone was under warranty. Good luck.

it has to be hardware.
Then make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store/Authorized Repair Center or contact Apple and arrange to have the phone sent in for service.
This issue subsided for months and returned last week with a vengeance. My phone is almost unusable at this point. I went to the Genius Bar this weekend and, AS I STATED PREVIOUSLY, they could do NOTHING. The rep seemed only slightly aware of the problem, and could offer no resolution other than replacing the phone. He basically said it's a problem with iPhone 6 Plus. He also said they used to replace the screens for this issue, but it wouldn't fix the problem, so they don't do that anymore. My phone is out of warranty, so it would cost me $ to replace it thru Apple. Luckily, I have Total Mobile Protection thru Verizon, so I can get a certified like-new replacement for no cost. That should hold me over until the 7 comes out.
In summary, this seems to be a widely occurring issue (at least with 6+), and there is no fix for it. The issue may come and go from time to time, but when it stops it is only temporary. The ONLY resolution is to replace the phone, and hope the replacement doesn't have the same problem.
If you expect Apple to resolve it, then take it to your nearest Apple Store and have it checked. It's a failing/defective display.
It really sounds as if your digitizer has gone bad. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider.
I changed my iPhone 3 times because of this.
Then I realized that my glass cover(ZAGG) was the problem.
So since I took the cover out nothing ever happened again.
There is no fix. The phone must be replaced. Look up "iPhone touch disease" for all the information you need.

the fact that Apple doesn't seem to be responding
Have you contacted them? If you haven't they have no way of knowing you have a problem. This is a user-to-user forum. Apple doesn't participate here. If a store is too far away, contact Apple by phone.
Also, you mention that the phone without the screen protector is not having a problem. Remove the screen protectors from the others and see if that helps.
HHad the same exact issue. Even restarted everything through iTunes. Took the phone to local Apple Store and they said this was happening with iPhone 6 plus. They took old phone and gave me a brand new one. So far no issues with new phone. Old phone didn't mess up till I had it for about 6 months.
iPhone 6 64 GB here. Same performance problem as everyone else. I took mine to a genius bar. The tech told me there is NO official fix for this issue. Replacing the screen only works sometimes so they have been instructed not to replace the screen and proclaim it "fixed". The only thing they can offer is a replacement. I'd say that makes this a pretty serious internal hardware fault. Since it is now out of warranty I am less than impressed that Apple is unable to fix a 1 year old product.
