Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Can I go back to an older OS?

I upgraded to Yosemite in the early autumn. My 2011 iMac has always had a tendency to crash (programs or whole computer) but that increased after installing Yosemite. I never upgraded to Mavericks though. I think I was using Snow Leopard before.

iMac, iOS 7.0.4

You are quick today!

Csound1 is correct, I missed this! Was looking at the red flags first.

This utility has a disastrous reputation, many problems up to and including data loss (for which WD supplied recovery software after a while) GET RID OF IT

Now for the next culprit. Read this carefully and ask if you don't follow everything, but, even considering your occupation, we need to get rid of it, if you have it.

Then read this article, it is a bit old, but still very valid

Tascam is something for my husband and daughter's music work. Are you saying they can't use that hardware with my computer?

Tascam have not updated the software that is required for the device since 10.8 (mountain lion) simply put, it is now out of date. Uninstall the software and contact Tascam in an attempt to get something more up to date. There is mention of a 10.9 driver under test (beta), there may be more.

I don't understand how you mean to "deal with that" or "check the compatibility" or what to "GET RID OF"

WD must be my EHD. I can't get rid of it. ALL of my data is on it.

Wringing your hands will not help, you need to correct the situation!

If all your data is on that drive then there is even more urgency. How old is the drive (I assume that you installed the software when you got the drive)

Do you keep backups?

Jan 12, 2015 6:29 AM in response to iphonemichele

Before your next restart, just unplug all the attached peripherals from the iMac. Remember to follow proper Eject procedure. Then run your EtreCheck.

Csound1 did not mean that you should throw away the WD HD. He meant that we need to get rid of that specific "Helper Software"! The Mac will still read your data and none of it will be lost!

The unplugging of the peripherals, is just to have your iMac bare, to qualify and rectify, if necessary. Then we will qualify the peripherals one by one again.

Jan 12, 2015 6:40 AM in response to Csound1

I'm not wringing my hands. I was saying that I didn't understand what you were asking me to do.

My EHD is only 1 year old. I'm not sure what software you're referring to.

I back up everything with Backblaze and I back up my images again at Smugmug. I've been planning to get a second EHD when I have money for it so I can also run time machine.

Jan 12, 2015 6:42 AM in response to Leopardus

"unplug all attached peripherals" -- where you thinking that Tascam thing is attached? It hasn't been, for months. Do you mean you want an Etrecheck without my EHD?

I don't know what that helper software is.

I'm going to go ahead an eject the two EHDs (the only two peripherals I have, unless the wireless printer is something to count too) and I'll run the Etrecheck again.

If they use it, and there are no updated software available, one solutions would be to put it in a virtual machine running OS X 10.8 later where they will be able to access and operate it.

To uninstall or delete it, does not make that permanent, but the purpose is to get your iMac stable so that you go about the right way to use updated or old Software and Hardware where applicable.

Can I go back to an older OS?
